The Waverley Novels

Around 1854 three neighbouring railway stations located in a steep, narrow valley in

the heart of Edinburgh were given the collective name Waverley, in honour of one of

the city’s and indeed Scotland’s most renowned authors, Sir Walter Scott. The name derived from his

famous series “The Waverley Novels,” that were amongst the most popular and widely read books in Europe for more than a century. Through time the land around the station became known as the Waverley Valley, a

name that holds good to this day.

The next enthralling chapter in the area’s history is about to be written.

To say that the Old Town is unique is an understatement. Its cobbled streets and medieval

architecture have rightly warranted its recognition as a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Home

to the University of Edinburgh and the city’s two most visited tourist attractions, The National

Museum of Scotland and Edinburgh Castle, the area attracts millions of visitors

from around the globe giving it a true cosmopolitan feel.

Forming the backbone of the Old Town, with

Edinburgh Castle to the west and the Palace

of Holyroodhouse to the east, lies the Royal

Mile. Ancient streets, wynds and closes fall

away north and south in a location that takes

in more historic attractions and key sites

than anywhere else in Scotland.

Bars, restaurants and cafés abound

and the cultural offer is unrivalled with a

profusion of galleries, museums and visitor

attractions all available. As you would expect

from such a dynamic destination the area

both attracts and is home to an eclectic mix

of colourful characters.
