WINDELLAMA PROGRESS ASSOC. HALL Inc.

Windellama Landcare

REPORT FROM WINDELLAMA PROGRESS ASSOC.

At this month’s Progress Association meeting it was agreed to upgrade the electricity supply and power points at the Windellama Hall.

This will make life easier for those using the kitchen and also for plugging in of appliances in the hall.

This work is to be carried out prior to the Field Day on Saturday, 1st November.

The Committee is also looking at options for providing undercover areas at the side of the hall and also off the canteen area at the back of the hall. This will increase the size of the hall and make it more user friendly.

We would welcome more members at our Committee meetings which are held on the third Monday of each month at 2 p.m. The next meeting is 20th October.

WINDELLAMA AND TARAGO LANDCARE GROUPS

Windellama Landcare recently met with the Tarago Landcare Group (TLG) to talk about some joint activities on projects and events.

The Tarago Landcare Group has invited us to join them for an event on Wednesday 15 October. Rainer Rehwinkel will be leading a Landcare field excursion in Tarago from 9.30 am to 3.30 pm. Rainer is a well-respected expert on the region’s ecosystems and works for the Office of Environment & Heritage. The field day will focus on the ecologically important native grasses around the Tarago Cemetery and in nearby remnant forest. To register for this event email Chris Elford ( [email protected] ) from Tarago Landcare. Chris will advise attendees soon on the availability of lunch on the day.

LANDCARE IS ABOUT … caring for our land – its soils, its water sources and its production. The Federal Government has recently announced its Landcare Program for

2014 and we are in the process of working out what funding we can seek to undertake new Landcare projects. If you have any Landcare-type issues on your property you could talk to one of the Windellama Landcare members listed below - or you may wish to come along to one of our busy bees to see the kind of work we do.

Call John Pearce (02 4844 5244) or Warren Yates (02 4844 5350) or Sandra Greville (02 4844 5947) for more information.

NEW MEMBERS

Annual membership of Windellama Landcare is $5.00 per family. CHILDREN ARE ALWAYS VERY WELCOME.

Nerriga Gardeners

Postcard from Rosewood

Although there were only a few of us, we had both beautiful weather & a lovely time at the Berry Garden Festival. We visited 4 gardens in the hills behind Berry. What can be achieved with good soil, more water & a few degrees warmer! Camelias & azaleas everywhere.

On Wednesday 15th October we will be visiting Red Cow Farm, 7480 Illawarra Highway, Sutton Forest. A very formal garden with very many "rooms" on a monastic theme. It is $8 entry & we will probably have lunch in Moss Vale.

There will be two meeting points - Nerriga Hotel @9am & then 1181 Oallen Road @9.15am & car pool. All are welcome. For further info Kay Hamer 4845 9021 or Di

Greetings from Rosewood on Windellama Road.

It has been quite busy here in September, Origin Energy marked some 300 trees under the power lines on our property for removal, and the guys have been cutting and chipping away at them for a couple of weeks.

The very welcome rain has made everything very green and the horses are enjoying some fresh spring grass. We also welcomed our first foal of the season, a filly who arrived seventeen days after her due date. After a somewhat slow and wobbly start on a very cold and windy night she is now up and charging around the paddock. Her owners are hoping for a successful racing career. Our second foal is due around the first week of November.

We are looking forward to getting out and about in the warm weather to do all the things we put off during the colder months.

Cheers Ray and Gayle

Willow Glen Gardeners http://www.whispersfromwillowglen.blogspot.com

On Tuesday, 2nd September, 2014, our Garden Club assembled at Bruce and Doreen's place for our meeting. It was raining cats, dogs and anything else you would want to put into the mix and it was FREEZING! However, it was really lovely on their verandah (enclosed) with a wonderful view of the surrounding countryside. We could imagine how it would be on a really fine day! We all gathered around a table brimming with morning tea goodies and caught up with our friends. It was especially good to see Carolyn and John Engisch back with us again. It was Irene Turner's birthday and she had brought a birthday cake for all of us to celebrate with her.

Warren ran the "what's happening in your garden" around the room and so many of us were despairing of citrus trees. Sooty mould, bud drop and general citrus malaise were common problems. Irene suggested that we spray with white oil and to give the plants a good feed. Frost damage seemed the common problem - even Fay's tree - on a verandah and protected, suffered damage. Geraniums were also a frost target even though one thought that they were protected.

Doug Gurney has finished Jackie's Wishing Well - hurrays all around - we can't wait to see it! It will be a wishing well for Can Teen - an organisation for young people suffering from cancer - so next trip to the Gurney's place - all contributions will be gratefully received! What a wonderful idea.

Irene came up with the idea that we should all wear name tags - so we will all wear name tags regularly from the next meeting!

Bruce and Doreen's garden was large with a number of trees dotted here and there. Being winter (it still felt like it) they were still leafless but in summer they would make a lovely sight. Unfortunately two lovely Robinias have been lost to borers. Try again Bruce - they are a lovely tree!

Just to remind everyone - our next meeting will be the excursion to "Farnborough House"

at Moss Vale on Tuesday 30th September next. We are to meet there at 10 a.m. - the entrance fee is $10 and it promises to be a very interesting morning. The address is "Farnborough House" at 6530 Illawarra Highway, Moss Vale. (3 kms from Moss Vale roundabout heading towards Robertson). Please make your own travel arrangements with others. Judy says that "Moidart" nursery and gardens will also be open.

REMINDERS:' The November meeting will be at Joy and Ross Sutcliffe's place at 55 Run-O-Waters Drive,

Goulburn. The December meeting will be David and Pauline Rouse's place at 1047 Mt. Fairy Rd.

NERRIGA CRICKET MATCH

By Rex Hockey

This is about a cricket match between Windellama and Nerriga played at Nerriga that took place probably between 1947 and 1949 which my father related to me.

Dad was a tennis player and had never played competitive cricket in his life. One Friday one of the Gegg boys, possibly Eric called around (this was prior to the telephone), and asked Dad if he could possibly make up the number for the next day’s cricket match at Nerriga as they had had a late withdrawal, Dad said he would oblige. I don’t know who won the toss but Windellama batted first and Dad could not remember how many runs they scored, but was very clear in that he scored 20 not out batting at number eleven.

During the course of Nerriga’s innings Dad remembers that he took two catches. So far so good. Whilst Nerriga knuckled down to their batting Windellama also knuckled down to their bowling and fielding and kept Nerriga within reach at all times, that is until their ninth wicket had fallen. THEN things were looking a little grim for Windellama as Nerriga only needed 6 more runs to win, providing of course they didn’t lose another wicket! Apparently this stage was reached at the end of an over, and in desperation the Windellama Captain asked Dad did he wanted to take the ball, upon which request Dad said he would have a go. Dad’s first ball beat the opposing Nerriga batman and took out middle stump. Had he not made twenty runs, or taken two catches or failed to take the wicket Nerriga would have won.

Dad’s grandfather, John William Carpenter Croker, who was an avid and better than average cricket player, was always disappointed that Dad didn’t play another cricket match, but Dad used to say he didn’t want to spoil his average of ‘20 not out’ with the bat and ‘one for none’ with the ball.

I tried hard to see if there was a record of the match but the Windellama records seem to have disappeared as have the Nerrriga ones according to Bruce Temple.

The coming of spring sees many things in nature set to grow and reproduce.

Bees become active as temperatures climb above 15 degrees during the day, and overnight frosts become less frequent. Plants begin to flower, and as we all know, bees collect nectar and pollen from them to feed an ever increasing number of growing larvae, hatching from eggs laid by their queen.

In a good spring this sees the hive population grow from around 5 to 10 thousand during winter to in excess of 40 thousand by mid spring. This large population brings overcrowding to the hive, and may result in a swarm issuing from it at any time from mid September to December.

The swarm consists of the Queen and about half the workers, who before leaving fill their honey stomachs from the stores in the hive. This on board food supply will sustain them for several days. A developing new Queen is left in the hive along with the remaining workers.

The swarm will come to rest a short distance from the old hive, and scouts then search for a new hive site . When a site is found the swarm quickly leaves its resting site and flies to its new home .which may be a tree hollow , a chimney ,or any other space they find suitable. The workers immediately begin honeycomb building and the Queen lays eggs in the new comb. A new hive is formed.

The beekeeper’s part in this process involves management techniques which prevent , or at least minimise swarming, and the capture and re-homing of any swarms he finds.

I will recover swarms from your property, and place them in one of my hives. Bob Shaw

In Your October Garden By Irene Turner

It’s not too late to add compost and fertilizer to your garden beds ready for planting this month. All the Fruit trees should be flowering from September to October, it is too late to spray for leaf curl. This time of year all the garden should be showing their spring colour.

VEGETABLES SEEDS

Carrots, parsnips, peas, cabbages, silver beet, radish.

Also cucurbits- cucumber, zucchini.

Melons - rockmelon and watermelon , start the seeds off in pots as they like warm soil to grow in, plant them out in November in a sunny position containing plenty of compost in the soil. They need lots of water.

Pumpkins and squashes give them plenty of room for the large running vines, they like a soil with plenty of old manure and compost. Cover the young seedling if we get a frost.

Capsicums, tomatoes can go in now but cover if we get a frost.

Sweet corn a good crop to freeze. Space the rows 60cm apart and sow in blocks to help pollen from the male flower or cobs. They like a garden dressed with complete fertilizer and compost. Sweet corn is also very useful during the summer months as it makes an excellent windbreak for the smaller vegetables such as lettuce and dwarf beans.

Beans sow the seed direct into the garden and just a few short rows will give good yields. During dry weather and when flowering make sure beans are well watered or the flowers will fall causing a crop failure. Climbing beans require support such as mesh or netting. Varieties which crop well in our climate are Epicure, Blue Lake and Purple King.

FLOWERS

Seedling or seeds;- Ageratum, alyssum(sweet Alice), asters, balsam, cosmos, Dianthus, gypsophila, larkspur, linaria, lobelia, Liverstone daisy, marigold, pansy, petunias, phlox, Poor man`s orchid(Schizanthus), Portulaca, snapdragons, verbena. Can go in now.

Nasturtium seeds plant near the vegetables to help confuse the white cabbage butterfly.

Bulbs - When spring flowering bulbs such as hyacinths, daffodils, jonquils, ranunculus and anemone finish flowering this month feed them with a complete fertilizer, this assists the bulb for next year`s flowers.

Plant herbs such as basil, oregano, thyme and mint in a well-drained soil or in a large container near the kitchen door.

When planting mulberry, prune back the main stem to 30-45cm above ground level to stimulate side shoots.

Composting worms start to eat more food now it`s getting warmer. Chop up scraps finely to speed up the process.

Don`t feed citrus until flowering has finished, as extra nitrogen can cause young fruit to abort.

Tomatoes should be rotated to new parts of the garden every year to reduce the change of diseases ruining your crop. Where space is limited, you can use containers as part of your rotation plan.

Make a fruit fly baits using 500ml PET bottles with lids. Cut a 5mm- wide slit halfway up the side, then pour in diluted juice and hang 2m apart near susceptible plants,(peaches, Quinces etc.,) Refresh fortnightly.
