The homestead now called “Beltana” and owned by Lynton and Sue Roberts was originally named “Rose View” by Elizabeth and John Moore in 1873 and they conducted the Post Office from their premises which was built of a slab construction and situated round about where Lynton and Sue’s roadside gate is. My Great Great Grandmother Charlotte Croker bought the property from Sarah in 1904 and in 1921 this property was given to my grandparents Tom and Maud (nee Croker) Hockey as a wedding gift. They lived in this dwelling and that was where my father started school. From 1873/4 the Post Office was conducted from these premises through a succession of different Post Masters/Mistresses until my Grandfather Tom in 1921/2, it was then transferred to Mr Edgar Fife at Rose Hill on January 1st, 1923. Although the ‘Windellama Remembers’ book states the present house was built in 1938, in actual fact it was built around 1930 or at the latest 1931. There is a photo of my father aged around seven outside the construction of the new house and another around seven or eight on his pushbike outside the finished and lived in house and another on his 12th birthday (`1935) – written on the back of the photo – outside the new house. This house was built by Tom who also built many houses in the area. This house is also the one where I was born, or maybe I should say my mother lived there up until my birth and I lived there afterwards. The house was of timber construction and corrugated iron roof. The hall from the front door had a bedroom on either side and this led into the lounge room and from the left of the lounge room was a door to the dining room. Shortly later Terence Carpenter added a concrete verandah across the front and two sides; the verandah alongside the lounge room and bedroom was partition off and this became my grandparents’ bedroom accessed through a door from the lounge room. Later, possibly around 1947 when I was born a kitchen was added alongside the dining room. It was here that my grandmother acquired a large number of white leghorn hens and sold the eggs until the Egg Board found out and then there was a lot of poultry meals for quite a few weeks. The rear door from the dining room led out to a porch where a bathroom and a laundry were accessed. Behind the laundry was the engine room which housed the 32 volt home lighting plant and behind this was the meat room and dairy. There was a large chopping block, which I think is still there, which catered for the cutting up chops etc. from the sheep which was killed about every two weeks (it wasn’t the same sheep each fortnight), the Silent Night kero fridge lived here as did a meat safe. I have a lot of very fond memories from Rose View and one not so fond when in 1953 my grandfather had been complaining of the lack of rain (he kept the records daily and reported them to the Weather Bureau or similar) and I, a six year old thought I would make him very pleased by filling the gauge up for him, I made three mistakes, firstly I overflowed it and there was a big puddle around it, secondly the watering can was left alongside it and thirdly I was nearby which was the worst mistake. Needless to say I never ever poured water in the rain guage again! As there was no telephone at Rose View when I was born in 1947, the ‘Bush Telegraph’ was utilised. Mrs. Daphne Bryant at Rose Hill, the current Telegraph Exchange Operator was to hang a white sheet on her door when she had received the telegram that I had been born, this sheet was visible from the hill behind Rose View and when it was seen that the sheet had been hung out they could go to the Exchange and ring the hospital, I’m not sure how many trips to the top of the hill were made before the sheet was observed. Power pole being put in outside the house about 1960 for the 240 volt electricity. Rose View” around 1961/2

The first meeting of the New Year was well attended this week and a long list of general business was attended to. Probably the most important item was the arrangements for a working bee at the hall on Saturday 8th March commencing at 9 a.m. This will be for tree planting, general cleanup of the grounds and disposal of rubbish. Whilst we understand the pressures of modern life make leisure time precious, if we are to keep the hall as the hub of the community, as it has been for the past eighty years, it is necessary that regular maintenance be carried out. A couple of hours of your time would be most appreciated. If you are able to help, gardening gloves and tools would be helpful – with the bodies to work them of course. Ring Cathy (4844 5554) or Frances (4844 5157) for more information. The Mulwaree Trust, when advising us they are delighted with the final outcome of our kitchen extension, has o f fe red to dona te a p laque commemorating this project. We have, of course, accepted their offer and

hope to arrange an official opening and plaque unveiling shortly. The Trivia Night, held earlier this month, whilst down in numbers because of clashes with other functions, was a great success and enjoyed by all who attended. The winning team was from Sydney - “A little bit of romance please!!” and they were delighted with the first prize of $100. We hope to reverse this trend next time and keep the trophy in local hands. The next meeting will be held on March 18th at 7.30 p.m. All welcome.

Windellama Website Stats 2 6 0 6 v i s i t o r s i n J a n u a r y -

Over 1500 so far this month. The Windellama News page is the most visited link on the website. Our number 1 ranking on Google is where most of our new visitors have come from. People found us on Google by using the following search words

A successful working bee was held at the Travelling Stock Route reserve on Sandy Point Road on 19 January, a beautiful Friday morning,. Twelve members came to work and three visitors came to look: the new fence was erected, old fencing wire was bundled up and twigs and fallen branches were tidied. Everyone worked so hard that we had two (delicious) morning teas! Members are continuing to maintain the grass at the Hall and a small group have poisoned the weeds there too. Some reparation work at the Hudsons’ is being carried out – this is a continuing project and will need a few more visits. The next WORKING BEE will be held at the Darraghs’ on SATURDAY 29 MARCH (date to be confirmed) where we will be fencing off an area for revegetation. WE’LL MEET AT 9.30 AM (for a cuppa) for a 10.00 am start. Lunch will be provided. Please bring fencing tools.

At the meeting in February, Tom Bryant, our newly appointed Curator of exhibitions, spoke about the draft collection policy for the Museum and the collection criteria against which items offered to the museum will be assessed for acquisition. The Gegg family exhibition at the Museum will be finishing in March and a new exhibition featuring the Muffet family will open on the day of the Fire Brigade Auction, Saturday 19 April 2008. This exhibition will show a number of artefacts collected and used by the Muffet family over the last 120 years. The Museum has just received from Dinah Gegg an early cookery book compiled by Emily Gegg. Emily, “Mum Gegg”, was Dinah’s mother-in-law. The recipe book was written about 1910.

The Museum is open on market days – the third Sunday each month. Come and see the new machinery shed at the
