TICKNER SELECTION AT CULLULLA
(It would appear that the Peter Tickner mentioned is James Gegg’s wife Elizabeth’s younger brother Peter Tickner (1855 - 1929) who married Mary Smith in 1879.)
20 January 1876 : Goulburn Evening Penny Post HEADING : Land Inquiry Court
The case of Peter Tickner, who was charged with non residence on his conditional purchase of 50 acres at Cullulla, made on the 5th June 1873, the report stating January 1874. Mr Gannon for the selector. The report of Mr Dean went to show that the selector did not live on the selection at the time of the survey; and Mr Street's report of the following years stated that there was a hut on the selection, but no sign of any living person living in it; the purchaser was camped on the ground at the time.
Peter Tickner stated : I am the owner of the land in question, and within a month I put up a one roomed hut, and have continued to reside there ever since, except at times when I went to look for work; besides the hut the whole of the land is enclosed with a log fence; a dam has also been made on the ground.
To the Commissioner : Mr Gegg took out the selection in my name; I am living with Mr Gegg
James Albert Gegg stated : I know the selection of Tickner's; he has made it his bona fide residence; he took possession of the land within a month after the selection was made, within which time the frame of a hut was put up, and which was finished shortly afterwards; he has slept in the hut ever since it was finished, which was direcly after the surveyor had been there.
To the Commissioner : During the seven months after the selection was taken up, and before the surveyors came, Tickner slept under the frame of the hut by putting up a couple of sheets of bark; I took up the selection for Tickner, who was working for me at the time; Tickner is a brother-in-law of mine.
Charles Henry Roberts stated : I know Tickner's selection; I recollect passing there
about two years ago, when I saw Tickner coming out of his hut very early in the morning, and he appeared to me as if he had been sleeping there; Tickner works for me sometimes, and occasionally stopped at my place.

Alpacas - Anecdotes & Advice Joy E Allenby-Acuna La Granja Holistic Alpacas
Busy times at La Granja holistic Alpacas. From 21st February till the 11 th of March, things have been hectic for us, we have had seven Alpaca births . Heroides began a fortnights holiday on the day before and the girls must have all been waiting for that because it began in earnest. After feeding in the morning Reina decided she would be the first to deliver, at about 10.30, after being up and down a little nose appeared. Being a maiden she was very tight, Heroides held her and smeared lubricant on her , one leg appeared and then the other one slid out I helped pull head and legs as she pushed and then the shoulders. She had passed the after-birth within half an hour and the little girl was up and feeding a little later, we had cleared her nose and mouth earlier. We called her Cien as she is our hundredth cria, her father is a black suri and she is a beautiful fawn suri. Then the next day, Sunday, Heroides was about to take the dogs for a walk and noticed that Mimosa had given birth, right at the end of the reed paddock and all he could see was a little head in the grass. He must have been just born as he was still covered in skin, she had shown no sign when I put her out at 6.30 am. This shows the difference you can have in births. He was up in half an hour and looking for milk. She passed the afterbirth about 10 am and he found his breakfast a little later. We decided to call him Temprano (early) as he was 13 days early. On Thursday the 26th it was my Granddaugh-ters fifth birthday and I decided to take her pre-sent into Canberra. Popa was funny from first thing, in the sand roll and going round and round as though she had lost the baby. She needed help as the babies legs were stuck on something, however soon a lovely fawn girl was born, and soon found the milk supply. We decided to call her Nieta, Spanish for grand daughter. Meanwhile next door in the reed paddock Guevara was lying down on her side
and looking uncomfortable. I looked back and two white legs were out and then Nicolas just slipped out, she was a maiden and it shows one can never tell what the birth will be like. I got away to Canberra at 10. 30 with big news to tell Nicola, two new crias and both named after her !! Guevaras milk was a long time coming in and we had to feed Nicolas for the first four days and I gave him false colostrum that night. We always give the mothers Cod Liver Oil and Vitamin ADE and Vit C on the night of their birth, this helps them heal and remain healthy. I have also been putting rasp-berry leaf and fennel in their mix to help with uterine muscles and milk coming in. It was extremely hot weather so the babies were also given boiled water by syringe as they can become very dehydrated and die. Believe me if we thought we had finished we were wrong.!! Next day Zarzamora was odd from breakfast time ,lying down. A large bub-ble appeared and Heroides had to help, legs stuck again , head out first. A lovely chocolate brown boy with a white v on his head., he was very snuffly and lay a while. Zarzamora was in shock but came to after a little while. Baby soon up and feeding and she seemed to have no trouble with her milk although a maiden too. They thought they would give us a rest then until Saturday the 7th when Princessa was on her side before breakfast. She then ate and

by the time I came back from feeding the others there was a large bubble and then head and legs. Born easily just a little help with the shoul-ders. Up and feeding on mum by 11.30 and she then passed the afterbirth. We called him Man-chado ( Spot) as had a large spot behind the ears. Brown spots but otherwise white. Only one to go then and Heroides had to go back to work on the 10th March. I had hoped that Misty could have got her birth over and done with as the year before she had a Caesar and the little girl died. But it was not to be . On the 11 th she was strange from first thing, luckily she came in to eat as I knew she would be more difficult to deal with as we bought her in and she is much more wild than our Alpacas. Also I longed to see her with a baby this time as last year she lost the baby and before we got her she was aborted and obviously was not in a mood to trust human beings again. When I came back to the run a few minutes later horri-fied I saw there were two bubbles, one with a nose and little hoofs in it and another alongside blood filled. I approached her cautiously and she turned her head to spit at me, I knew I really needed some-one to hold her head but it was me or me !!!! She was very good and let me help pull the baby and I ended up covered in blood as the other bubble I believe was the afterbirth come early. She had a dear little girl and I called her Alegria ( joy and happiness) as at last Misty had her baby. We will probably let her enjoy this one as long as possible and not mate her again. Also white with two large spots behind the ears, not the same father as Manchado. One never can tell what colour is going to appear. Misty has bonded so well and will not let the baby out of her sight, in fact I have only been allowed to pick her up once.!! All is peace at La Granja now and I am only hav-ing to feed Manchado twice a day as Princessa is feeling a little sore. Our seven little crias race around the paddock and do your heart good. We can relax now until spring, no more births until then. Joy Allenby- Acuna www.lagranjaholisticalpacas.com.au Wethers for sale

This is a perfect time to tidy up and put trees in your garden, the weather is mild with cool nights and you can keep the moisture up to the plants.
Vegetables - Seeds- Broad beans which like a cool climate to grow in and are ready to pick in Spring. Before planting give the soil a good liming and add old manure or complete fertilizer. Peas they like a support to grow on, also like the soil limed and fertilized before planting. Give the peas seed a good watering when planting, then wait until they germinate to water them.
Seedlings—Cabbages and onions can go in now
. Flowers Seedlings of alyssum, Canterbury bells, carnations, cornflowers, delphinium, dianthus, hollyhocks, russel lupins, pansy, viola, primula, snapdragon, stocks and wallflower. Sow seeds of sweet peas- prepare the soil same as for the eatable peas. Order your deciduous tree now and plant in May or June.
PLANT OF THE MONTH PRUNUS Flowering Peaches, Plums, Cherries, Apricots and Almonds.
The species grown for the delight of the appetite, peaches, plums, cherries, apricots and almonds, are bushy trees, rarely above 7m. They need a deal of pruning or shaping to produce a satisfactory fruit crop. The flowering type grown purely for eye appeal can produce some small fruit. All are deciduous, with attractive single rose-type flowers in early spring.,either pinks or white. These generally appear on small spur-like branches designed to take the weight of the fruit.
All fruiting species may be grown from their seeds or stones, but are generally propagated by bud grafting to be certain of variety and quality. Some of the most popular of the ornamentals are the Japanese Flowering Cherries, these have flowers both single and double, in a wide range of colours from pure white to deep red, sometimes with a variegations. In Western gardens, the spring display is provided more by a range of hybrid flowering peaches, almonds, and other species. These include Purple-leafed Plum, with a single pink flower.
