The following is from Wikipedia:- HISTORY : This name for handheld venipuncture devices first appears in Anglo- Saxon manuscripts at around A.D. 1000.[1] The name is probably derived from the phlebotome from phlebos, Greek for vein, and tome, meaning to cut.[2] These instruments are the progression from the early use of fish teeth, sharpened stones, and thorns used to penetrate blood vessels. The earliest known examples are made of bronze with a myrtle- leaf shape to the blade. In the 17th and 18th centuries the German Fliete, and French flamettes were developed. These devices with their right-angle blades are the earliest forms of what collectors would now refer to as the fleam. USE: While there are reports of this type of instrument being used in humans, it is more likely that these were reserved for veterinary use, while the common thumb lancet was the instrument of choice for use in people. These instruments with their triangular-shaped blades were designed to be placed over the vein (most commonly the jugular or saphenous) and struck with a fleam stick. This would ideally result in a rapid penetration of the vein with minimal risk to the operator and minimal dissection of the subcutaneous tissues. This latter point would have been considered important in minimizing the formation of a dissecting hematoma. Once the desired blood was drained from the patient, the operator would place a pin through the edges of the incision. A figure eight of tail hair or thread would then be placed over the pin to retain closure.[4] Statements from Mayhew in his 1864 treatise would indicate that the perceived benefits of these procedures were coming into great question in the latter half of the 19th century for all conditions except laminitis.[4] I would presume it probably was my Great Grandfather’s John William Croker of ‘Pleasant Hill’.

Sometime following my father’s death, my mother gave me an instrument Dad said I was to have as no-one else would know what it was. He wasn’t quite correct as not only did no-one else know what it was, I didn’t know what it was. My intelligent guesses were all incorrect. So I set out to find out what it was.

With the blades closed it looks just like a pocket knife. The second image shows an insignia of the rising sun with the words ‘Real’ and ‘Bright’ either side with the word ‘Witness’ underneath. With the help of Mr. Google, I tracked down the manufacturer in England who confirmed that they had made it and that it was called a FLEAM. Fortunately they provided a few links to enable me to find out more.

The following is from Wikipedia:- HISTORY : This name for handheld venipuncture devices first appears in Anglo-Saxon manuscripts at around A.D. 1000.[1] The name is probably derived from the phlebotome from phlebos, Greek for vein, and tome, meaning to cut.[2] These instruments are the progression from the early use of fish teeth, sharpened stones, and thorns used to penetrate blood vessels. The earliest known examples are made of bronze with a myrtle-leaf shape to the blade.

A figure eight of tail hair or thread would then be placed over the pin to retain closure.[4] Statements from Mayhew in his 1864 treatise would indicate that the perceived benefits of these procedures were coming into great question in the latter half of the 19th century for all conditions except laminitis.[4]

I would presume it probably was my Great Grandfather’s John William Croker of ‘Pleasant Hill’.

In Your March Garden From Irene Turner

Earth Hour—26th March Why take part? With over 4000 cities in over 128 countries taking part, Earth Hour has grown into the world’s largest community-driven campaign for the planet. Earth Hour truly demonstrates the power of individuals, communities, businesses and governments to unite and make a difference.

What can you do? Sign up & switch off for Earth Hour at 8:30pm Saturday 26 March – rally your friends and family and make it a night to remember. Switching off is a simple act, yet a hugely powerful one, making a statement that we care about the planet, while also sending a reminder to our leaders that we want action. Nominate & vote in the WWF Earth Hour Awards , sharing the positive actions being taken across Australia for a better, healthier world. Go beyond the hour & commit to enduring changes for the planet. Earth Hour is the perfect time to make simple, everyday changes to our lives to reduce our environmental footprint.

We all have a part to play. It is through the sum of our efforts that we will make a difference & together lead to way to a greener & more prosperous future. It’s YOUR earth hour!

Plant your cauliflower, cabbages, brussel sprouts, or broccoli; and to get them established before winter-use liquid fertiliser on them. Vegetables Lettuce, turnips, radish & white onions can also go in now. Flowers Seedlings of alyssum, pansy, viola, stocks, poppies, calendula, carnation, dianthus, polyanthus, larkspur, snapdragon, statice, verbena can go in now. Seedlings of wallflower, sweet Williams also.

Seeds of Virginian stock can be sown directly where they are to grow; these come in colours of white, pink, cream & lavender.

Perennial plants such as hollyhock, Canterbury bells, aquilega (columbine), delphinium and penstemon can be planted now.

Watch for caterpillars on your roses. You can use sprays or pick them off and feed them to the chooks. Spray roses with Eco Oil for black spot, pick off the affected leaves and put them in the bin.

You can propagate cuttings of geraniums, fuschia and hydrangeas now. In a 10cm pot take a dozen cuttings, making sure they are planted around the edge of terracotta pots to get more warmth. Use a mixture of one part coarse sand to two parts peat moss. Make sure the mixture never dries out.

Fruit Fly Trap Cut a 5mm slot half way up a 500ml plastic bottle, complete with lid. Pour in a little bait made from diluted fruit juice or yeast spread (vegemite). Then hang from plants, placing traps 2 metres apart.

Grant Supports Southern Tablelands Book Clubs

Book clubs across the Southern Tablelands can now access extra support and resources thanks to a new library service titled Read and Connect, funded by an $18,000 grant from the Library Council of NSW.

Member for Goulburn Pru Goward gave a passionate speech to launch the program at Goulburn Library. Her words were received fondly by the large audience of book club members and avid readers from across the region.

Mayor of Goulburn Mulwaree Cr Geoff Kettle thanked the Library Council of NSW for providing the funding, which was made available through the Library Development Grant program. He also thanked Ms Goward for supporting the grant application.

Goulburn Library Branch Officer in Charge Sylvia Brook encouraged new and existing book clubs throughout the Southern Tablelands to visit the Read and Connect links at www.strl.nsw.gov.au for more information, or contact their local library.
