Week 6 Term 1
2018 – The Year Ahead!
Over the last few days the school has been
completing its annual goal setting for the 2018
year. To do this we draw on surveys, reviews
and feedback from previous year/s and plan for
where we want St Peter’s to be, regarding
teaching and learning, Catholic identity and
sustainability, in 5 years’ time and to plan the next steps. These three areas are aligned
with Brisbane Catholic Education focus areas for the wider community and schools.
Today I present an overview of school goals for 2018. A chance for input with these goals
will be given at the March P&F meeting and through an online forum (details in next week’s
newsletter).
Strong Catholic Identity goals covers two areas: Teaching and Learning of Religion and
Catholic Identity at St Peter’s – Our faith story in action.
This year the focus includes:
• Teaching and assessing of Religion – its effectiveness, student engagement and
data to inform learning
• Phase two of our 3-year cycle of embedding our vison into everyday action (a
community in learning and alignment to St Mary Mackillop)
• Social Justice focus “Never See a Need without doing something about it”
• Development, refinement and use of the scared spaces at St Peter’s (Mary
MacKillop Outdoor Education space, Nano Nagle Garden, St Peter’s entrance,
Labyrinth)

School Fees Urgent Reminder: School fees provide income to the school to meet the financial costs of
running the place – electricity, rates, water, wages for certain staff, excursions, and
consumables for classes and the like. Levy’s meet the costs of paying our school building
loans. Our budget allocations at the start of each year consider this income and help us plan
for possibilities and opportunities to plan a variety of educational outcomes. Failure to pay
school fees impacts the school on a variety of levels and it is a school expectation that on
enrolment that families meet the financial agreements met at this time. Thanks to the many
families that prioritise this commitment whether this be by setting up a direct debit or paying term by term by the due
date. For those that this bill has ‘slipped off the radar’ we ask that you attend to this promptly. Remember a new
direct debit form needs to be completed each year. I also wanted to remind you that if fees are a struggle in your
current situation that you talk to the school so we can support your individual circumstance.
Have you got an unwanted school jumper? A teaching colleague of mine has put out a
call to Brisbane schools for uniform support for kids at her school. She is working at Our Lady of the Sacred
Heart Thamarrurr Catholic School (OLSHTCS) located at Wadeye (Port Keats) about
400kms SW of Darwin. Wadeye is an Indigenous community of 2500 people who come
from 20 clan groups and make up 3 broad ceremonial groups across a broad geographical area
known as the Thamarrurr region.
Kerrie writes “I am in need of some help if possible!! I need some zip up school jumpers for my kids.
We do not have school jumpers and the kids are often cold (yes even when I am roasting!!). If your
school is able to help in any way could you please let me know? They do not have to be new but they
will need to be small...probably size 4 - 6. (maybe 8s)” If you can help please leave donations at the
school office before next Friday 9th March. St Peter’s will then send the jumpers away. Thanks for
those who can help with this action.
Reading Workshop (Prep & Year 1) – Tuesday 6 March For any parents or caregivers interested in learning some ways to help your Prep or Year 1 child on their reading
journey, we will be conducting a Reading Workshop on Tuesday 6 March at 2.30pm in the LOTE Room (Class above
After School Care).
Junior Choir A new choir for Years One, Two and Three is commencing this Monday, March 5th. Please come along to start the
week with some singing. The choir will meet at 8am in the music room. Anne Flood would love to find a parent
volunteer who enjoys singing to help support with voice leading for our young singers.

3-6). All nominations must be submitted by this Friday 2nd March. Please see the links below for general

Third Sunday of Lent
4th March 2018
Bayan, a 12 year old Syrian girl in Jordan, struggled to overcome the trauma of living in a conflict zone,
facing the prospect of missing out on school. With Caritas Australia’s support, Bayan is excelling in her
studies with ambitions to become an ophthalmologist.
Please donate to Project Compassion 2018 and help equip young people to succeed in the future,
providing just futures for others like Bayan. A Just Future starts with your support!
You can donate during Lent by returning your donations box to the school office or by visiting
www.caritas.org.au/projectcompassion.
Easter Capers: Easter Capers will be run at the Parish on
Friday afternoons from Friday 2 March. The total cost for
this is $5 per person or $10 per family for the whole
program, you don’t need to attend all four sessions. See
the below flyer for more information.

Donations still needed! **Mothers Day Stall 2018**
Hello again, thank you for the donations we have
received so far. We still however have a long way to go.
For the stall to be a success we rely on lots (and lots) of
donations from the school community. We are asking
for donations of tea/coffee mugs, bath sponges/loofahs,
body washes, tea/coffee sachets, stationery (i.e.
notepads, pens), hand creams, nail polish, small
cosmetic purses. Please ensure the donations are NEW
and UNUSED. You can hand your donations into the
school office for collection.

Our school has implemented EdSmart to assist with communication between school and parents. EdSmart is an
online system that replaces all the paper forms we send home for you to complete and return.
The online system is extremely easy for parents to use. Instead of paper forms coming home in your child’s school
bag, you will be sent an email notification, with a link to click that opens a secure web page version of the form to
complete and submit. You can do this on your phone, tablet or computer. You do not need to download any apps
or register.
We believe this system is a much more efficient way to capture all this information from you, and means teachers
and the administration staff can easily keep track of who has returned their forms. All the data you submit in the
forms is held in a secure database and is only accessible to selected school staff. Please take some time to read
through the basic tutorial below.
Earlier this week we sent out our first electronic permission slip for
prep – 2 swimming lessons. Many families have already received
message in their inbox from a company called EdSmart, please follow
these basic steps to complete permission and medical forms. Upon
receiving a permission slip or medical information email you should see
our school logo on the message prompting you to follow a link to gain
access to the secure web document.
When you have gained access to the relevant form, fill out all fields and submit your response. Information regarding
the excursion can be found on this document. Attendance details are then passed on to the classroom teachers and
online records are kept.

web form
Any current correspondence sent via
EdSmart can also be viewed on the Parent
Portal, to access these documents log into
your account and navigate to the
Permission Forms tab. Here you will be
able to view completed documents and
access incomplete forms.
Volunteer Student Protection Training: If you volunteer at St Peter’s don’t forget to
complete the compulsory online Student Protection Course. It takes about 30 mins to
complete. Once the training has been completed you will be asked to print out the
registration form, please complete and bring into the school office. Please note: This
training needs to be completed prior to any parent help this term.

Message from TransLink - Tell us what you think about real-time info for bus services
In Term 3, 2017 TransLink commenced a trial of our real-time information system on selected school buses in Logan.
Since this time, you have been able to access all Clark’s Logan City Bus Service school bus timetable information in
real-time - which means you can see when your bus is stuck in traffic, or being held up for some reason.
We want to know what you think about the trial, to see if it is something we should roll out across South East
Queensland.
If you access real-time information for your school bus service, or would like to tell us what you think about this
initiative, please complete a feedback survey by Friday 9 March.
