SCHOOL GUIDELINES
At YMS we encourage the development of considerate, creative and successful musicians. We recognise that every pupil and member of staff must be treated as an individual, whilst maintaining a safe and respectful environment for the entire community.
In order to do this, we ask that everyone follow some simple guidelines, based on good manners and common sense. These are:
Respect others.
• Each day at School is a busy one. Take responsibility for your timetable and please be punctual.
• Respect the direction and guidance of staff. They are here to help you learn and grow as people and musicians, and have a duty to keep you safe.
• Respect each other’s opinions. You are under no obligation to agree with them but we are all obliged to listen.
Respect yourself.
• In order to do your best, you must feel your best. Eat properly, get fresh air and exercise, and go to bed on time.
• Everyone has moments when they feel stressed or low. Asking for help when you need it is a sign of self-respect, so don’t be afraid to talk to someone else about how you feel.
Respect your environment.
• We are privileged to live and work in a beautiful setting with won-derful facilities. Please help to keep it that way for everyone who lives, works or visits here by ensuring that all spaces are clean, tidy and free from clutter. Always leave rooms tidy and put your belongings away. Please do not take food, mugs or glasses into teaching or practice rooms.
19
Most of the things that concern you at school are likely to be sorted out informally before they become major problems. We hope that you feel able to share any worries about your time at school with your teachers and parents. However, occasionally there may be other problems which could require slightly different treatment. For example:
You may feel that you are being treated unfairly by a member of staff or another pupil.
You may feel that you are the victim of verbal and/or physical abuse.
You may have concerns about the welfare of another pupil.
It is important that you feel able to share concerns such as these with us so that we can work together to address them.
There are many adults who would be happy to listen and give advice:
Your HouseparentsThe School NursesThe Head, Director of Music or Director of StudiesAny teacher or member of staff you trust
The School has a Counsellor, Gemma Sharp, who is available on Monday afternoons from 14:30 until 18:30. Appointments can be made by emailing her directly on [email protected] or you can ask any member of staff to make one for you.
We also have an Independent Listener, Gillian Watts. She can be contacted on [email protected] and will come into school once a term for drop-in sessions. Pupils will be made aware of these dates as they occur.
IF YOU HAVE A CONCERN
20
The School regards bullying and racial or sexual harassment as extremely serious and it deals with these issues firmly.
Bullying is the exertion of power of one person over another. It includes a wide range of behaviour and may involve physical, verbal or psychological behaviour which may make another person feel embarrassed, offended, upset, devalued, degraded, afraid, frustrated, or angry.
Everyone in the community deserves the right to conduct their lives without being the victim of bullying or discrimination. The School’s aim is to promote sensitive behaviour, so that bullying, i.e. deliberately causing distress, is seen as out of place in the community.
All teachers, parents and pupils have a duty to report incidents of bullying or discrimination. The School takes mental bullying as seriously as physical bullying. The School aims to prevent any bullying occurring as well as dealing with all cases swiftly and sensitively.
Bullying of any kind will not be tolerated.
