DEAR LOVERS OF THE ARTSFor more than 140 years, JCC MetroWest has been a place where people come together to be engaged, enriched, gain new perspectives, and share their journeys.

Arts and cultural programs provide a meaningful and inspiring way for each of us to connect to the Jewish community and to celebrate the beauty and vibrancy of Jewish life. As lovers of the arts, we at The Gaelen Center for the Arts are thrilled to build upon the JCC’s fabulous New Jersey Jewish Film Festival and our popular youth theater programs by bringing to our community an exciting, multi-faceted, and robust selection of arts and cultural programs in the months to come.

We invite you to browse through the 2019 Gaelen season brochure and mark your calendars! Get ready for a lineup that promises to be both entertaining and enlightening. We look forward to sharing the season with you and seeing you at The Gaelen!

ABOUT JCC METROWEST JCC MetroWest was founded in Newark in 1877 to help assimilate Jews into American culture and life. Today, more than 2,000 people walk through our doors every day.

For some, the JCC is a gateway to Jewish life; for others it is a place to maintain their physical health and mental well-being; for children and youth it is a first stop on their journey toward a lifelong love of learning and independence; and for seniors and adults it is a link to friendship, and nourishment of body and mind.

MISSIONTo strengthen our community and add meaning to the lives of those we serve by connecting them to—and through—shared Jewish experiences.

VISIONTo engage individuals and families in the Greater MetroWest area so they have a greater sense of connection to each other, to their Jewish community, and will celebrate and embrace the beauty of Jewish life.

VALUESIn keeping with our Jewish heritage and values, JCC MetroWest is an inclusive community of communities. We are open to and appreciate people of all ages, genders, races, religions, nationalities, ethnicities, abilities, sexual orientations, education, socioeconomic levels and political perspective.

JCC MetroWest is a beneficiary agency of Jewish Federation of Greater MetroWest NJ.

JCC MetroWest strives to ensure access and meaningful participation by all members of the community.

Curtis Institute of Music Philadelphia, PAThe Curtis Institute of Music educates and trains exceptionally gifted young musicians to engage a local and global community through the highest level of artistry. One of the most selective schools in the United States, Curtis accepts, on average, 4% of applicants each year, and a tuition-free policy ensures that talent and artistic promise are the only considerations for admission. With a small student body of about 175, Curtis ensures that each young musician receives an education of unparalleled quality,

distinguished by a “learn by doing” philosophy and personalized attention from a faculty that includes a high proportion of actively performing musicians.

Winners of the 2018 Astral Artists National Auditions, the Vera Quartet has been named the String Quartet-in-Residence at the Curtis Institute of Music for 2018–2020. The quartet also received Grand Prizes at recent Plowman and Yellow Springs chamber music competitions, top prizes from the M-Prize Chamber Arts Competition, and the St. Lawrence award from the Wigmore Hall String Quartet Competition.

With members from Spain, Cuba, and the USA, the ensemble shares a deep commitment to exploring and programming the music of their roots, in juxtaposition with the great masterworks of the string quartet repertoire.

Since its formation in 2015, the Vera Quartet has established itself as one of the most exciting groups of its generation. They held residency at the Beethovenhaus in Bonn, Germany; embarked on tours of South Korea and Spain; served as Graduate Quartet-in-Residence at the Jacobs School of Music under the mentorship of the Pacifica Quartet; collaborated with IU New Music Ensemble, performing with world-renowned pipa player Wu Man as part of the China Remixed Festival; partnered with the IU Latin American Music Center to assist in bringing the music of Latin American composers to a larger audience; took part in both the Robert Mann String Quartet Seminar and the Juilliard String Quartet Seminar in New York City; was selected by NPR’s Performance Today to spend a week as one of the show’s Young Artists in Residence. The Vera Quartet has also taken part in the Chamber Music Residency program at the Banff Centre in Canada and

attended the Center for Advanced Quartet Studies at the Aspen Music Festival. In addition to working with the Pacifica Quartet, the Vera Quartet has also been coached by members of the Juilliard, Cleveland, Brentano, St. Lawrence, Tokyo, American, Mendelssohn, and London-Haydn quartets, as well as Atar Arad, Mauricio Fuks, and Peter Stumpf.

JAMIE BERNSTEIN7:30PM

MAR14

Jamie Bernstein is a writer, broadcaster, concert narrator, and filmmaker (her documentary Crescendo: The Power of Music is now available on Netflix). She is the oldest daughter of revered composer/conductor Leonard Bernstein and offers a rare look at her father on the centennial of his birth in her deeply intimate and evocative Famous Father Girl: A Memoir of Growing Up Bernstein (Harper/June 12, 2018).

Leonard Bernstein was an enormous celebrity during one of the headiest periods of American cultural life, as well as the most protean musician in twentieth century America. But to his eldest daughter, Jamie, he was above all the man in the scratchy brown bathrobe who smelled of cigarettes; the jokester and compulsive teacher who enthused about Beethoven and the Beatles; the insomniac whose 4 a.m. composing breaks involved spooning baby food out of the jar. In public and private, Lenny was larger than life.

In Famous Father Girl, Bernstein invites us into her family’s glamorous world. But this is also the story of a young girl who herself caught the creative bug and the desire to express herself musically. And the tension of doing so, while living under the shadow of the country’s most renowned musician, forms this memoir’s emotional core.

ARIEL BURGER12:30PM

MAY2

Join JCC MetroWest as we recognize Yom HaShoah.Ariel Burger first met Elie Wiesel at age fifteen; he became his student in his 20s, and his teaching assistant in his 30s. Witness: Lessons from Elie Wiesel’s Classroom chronicles the intimate conversations between these two men over decades, as Burger sought counsel on matters of intellect, spirituality, and faith, while navigating his own personal journey from boyhood to manhood, from student and assistant to rabbi and, in time, teacher.

Based on twenty-five years’ worth of journal entries, five years of classroom notes, and interviews with Elie Wiesel’s students from all over the world, this profoundly hopeful, thought-provoking, and inspiring book takes us into Wiesel’s classroom, where the art of listening and storytelling conspire to keep memory alive. Burger gives us a front-row seat to these remarkable exchanges.
