Melton Adult Mini-SchoolDear Parents,
This year, a Melton course entitled “Foundations of Jewish Family Living” is being offered at Lehrman. Geared towards parents of younger children, we will delve into classical and modern texts in search of Jewish insights that promote values.
We will address our shared history—the birth of the Jewish people, the significance of the Exodus from Egypt—and we will explore what a Jewish heritage can be, ought to be, and is.
We will examine hurtful and helpful speech, how to give others space, and how to make social interactions – when guiding our children with their friends, and when communicating directly with our children – respectful and Jewishly focused.
Rounding out the big picture, we will be inspired by stories and tales, true and metaphorical, that will help us visualize the miracles that we see and create in our every day existence.
No doubt you will find a tremendous sense of satisfaction and empowerment from this “shot in the arm” of Jewish enrichment. As a group with common interests and values, we will learn together, talk together, and enjoy good company as we give ourselves what might be considered by some a rare opportunity to learn and study in a non-pressured environment, with a beginning and end and clear goals defined.
Please join us. Our sample class will follow the Thursday
December 1st PA meeting (8:45am); class is 9:15 to 9:45am. We will discuss Making Our Own Miracles: Views on the December Holidays. How can we as parents bring the right tone to Hanukkah celebrations? How can we differentiate between the Jewish holiday and the holiday season we see all around us? What are the historical talking points to relate to our kids? How much of the way these holidays are currently celebrated have their roots in ancient practice? How much of it is relatively new?
Classes for the Melton course, which has 10 sessions, begin January 10, 2012 and will be held each Tuesday from 8:15-9:30 am. Register in the Lehrman office, or download the form at:http://lehrmanschool.org/meltonregister.pdf
I look forward to greeting you then.Rabbi Avi Billet

Visual Art as Critical Thinking…Visual arts (as well as other arts) are an excellent discipline to build and utilize critical thinking skills. I don’t think we often give credit to the deep conceptual and interpretational thinking that goes into the creation of a piece of art, and this is often because art is treated as something separate from the core content areas. School does not need to be this way. In fact, I have recently seen two excellent ways that art can be used to wrestle with rigorous content from the core while allowing for creativity and expression…
