ThermoFit® Pro is a unique modular system for assembling
stylus systems for ZEISS coordinate easuring machines.
You can create stylus systems suitable for series production
with just a few components which are perfectly tailored to
each other. Increase the productivity of your coordinate
measuring machines with our innovative technology.
Rotary angle piece
We prepare prefabricated angle blanks
made of a high-grade titanium alloy
for you quickly and precisely. As an
alternative, you can manufacture the
angle pieces yourself using our blanks.
Each angle piece can be clearly identified
via an engraved item number.
Rotary star piece M3 XXT
You can quickly assemble star styli with
star end pieces. It is easy to align them in
our zero-play cone receivers. In order to
assemble exceptionally small star styli, up
to five M3 XXT styli can be inserted in the
star piece shown here.
Extensions
ThermoFit® Pro extensions are provided
with two index pins and are fixed to the
adapter plate with no risk of twisting.
Even if the extensions are repeatedly
assembled and disassembled, the angular
alignment on the cube the same.
Cone receiver
Each ThermoFit® Pro extension has
a fixed-mounted cone receiver. This
enables adjustable end pieces, e.g.
angles, stars or cubes, to be
accommodated.
Stylus systems
for series measurements
Stylus systems must remain stable and aligned at all times in series
measurements, in order to guarantee accurate measuring results. Our
innovative ThermoFit® Pro system for ZEISS VAST® stylus systems
accomplishes this task. In ThermoFit® Pro, extensions are inserted in
the cube of the adapter plate, so that they cannot twist, and are then
screwed into place. They are equipped with a fixed-mounted rotary
piece receiver. You can insert angle or star pieces directly in this rotary
receiver and align them precisely. This is easily done and saves time.
In addition to this, you save on components, because an extra rotary
piece is not required.
We have a complete range of different end pieces in stock, so that
almost any requirement can be met with our sturdy precision elements.
For for production use, we fix the alignment of the rotary pieces for
you, e.g. by laser welding. This prevents unwanted detachment during
operation or when styli are exchanged.
We prepare prefabricated angle and spatial angle blanks made of a
high-grade titanium alloy for you quickly and precisely. Or you can
manufacture the angle pieces yourself using our blanks. We will be
happy to assist you.

The ThermoFit® Pro system comes with
index holes. These enable twist-proof
accommodation of extensions and spatial
angle pieces with high angle accuracy.
Styli
From ruby to diamond: We offer
standard and special styli in every
conceivable design. Enter the desired

Spatial angles
Obliquely arranged holes require spatial angle pieces on the stylus
system. The preparation of complex spatial angle pieces – also referred
to as ball heads -- is simple with our blanks.The connection to the adapter
plate is twist-proof due to of the ThermoFit® Pro connection system with
2-pin plug-in connection. A precision manufactured spatial angle piece
can therefore be installed without alignment. As a result, you save time
when making preparations for the measurement.
Several spatial angle pieces can be attached to adapter plates with a
double cube. This helps save you the trouble of a time-intensive stylus
change.
Each spatial angle piece is marked with its unique item number and the
two installed angles. This allows you to exchange individual spatial angle
pieces, even locally and without additional alignment aids being required.

Multiple holder
You can assemble star styli and complex
stylus systems easily and quickly without
alignment with our ThermoFit® Pro
multiple holders. Index holes ensure that
there is no risk of twisting.
Multiple holders
with spatial angles
Have you ever assembled and manually aligned stylus systems with several
rotary and knuckle joints? If so, you will appreciate our multiple holders
with fixed spatial angle pieces. They eliminate the need for setup work,
and the stylus system can still be equipped with new angle pieces if
changes are required. If a number of obliquely arranged drilled holes or
other features are to be measured with a stylus system, multiple holders
with the ThermoFit® Pro interface are extremely practical. The spatial angle
pieces and extensions can be quickly and easily attached to the eightfold
holder shown on the left in such a way that they cannot twist.
We supply our customers with stylus systems just as precisely: they are
completely assembled, aligned and provided with a clear article and serial
number. You will also receive the stylus documentation for the ZEISS Stylus
System Creator in the SSC file format free of charge.

Cube M5
This ThermoFit® Pro cube M5 has an
integrated cone adapter which can be
inserted directly in the rotary end piece
of an extension. Up to five styli can be
mounted on cubes.
Stepped extension
The extensions of the ThermoFit® Pro
system that range from 20 to 11 mm
enable the stable assembly of very long
styli with easy accessibility. The
extensions have a rotary end piece
fitted at the end.
FixAssist®
A tried-and-tested alignment device for
VAST® stylus systems. Shaft collisions are
prevented during your measurements
with precisely aligned stylus systems and
angles.
Quick alignment
of large stylus systems
Large stylus systems with a large number of styli have to be aligned before
use. The time required for this is drastically reduced with ThermoFit® Pro.
Only three angles have to be set up on the stylus system in the photo on
the left: The M5 cube with integrated rotary piece and the two double
angle pieces with rotary piece. All the other angles are fixed, the extensions
are secured by means of the twist-proof ThermoFit® Pro pin connection.
We also offer laser welding of rotary joints for rough use in production.
As a result, the stylus systems remain stable throughout and cannot be
misaligned during exchange of the styli.
The FixAssist® alignment device for VAST® stylus systems is a useful tool for
adjusting all the angles on stylus systems with a high degree of accuracy.

the CMM. Single-sided ThermoFit® Pro stylus systems are

These adapter plates are designed for the VAST® probe.
They are equipped with an ID-chip which is recognized
by the CMM. A ThermoFit® Pro extension or a spatial
angle piece can be mounted on the side of the plate
extension with a ThermoFit® Pro single cube. This plate
extension is a low-cost solution for stylus systems with
only a lateral attachment. The adapter plate is supplied
with ThermoFit® Pro fastening screws and the appropriate
tool.

The ThermoFit® Pro extensions ranging from 20 to 11 mm
are suitable for stylus systems which require a high
bending strength. They enable the stable assembly of
very long styli with easy accessibility. All parts are securely
connected by the unique ZEISS cutting adhesive technology
and have a cone receiver fitted at the end. The two index
pins guarantee twist-proof attachment.

Extension with cone receiver, diameter 11 mm, ThermoFit® silver
ThermoFit® Pro extensions are provided with two index
pins and are therefore fixed with no risk of twisting.
The angular alignment on the cube remains constant even
with repeated assembly and disassembly. A cone receiver
is fitted at the end of each extension. The extension is
characterized by the ThermoFit® technology which offers
practically no expansion or torsion with temperature
changes.

Knuckle joint M5, rotary
The knuckle joint can accommodate a stylus or an
extension with M5 thread. The knuckle joint has an
adjustable angular range of 0°-/+ 90° and is directly
inserted in a cone receiver. As a result, any desired
spatial angles can be set.

The blank for spatial angle is provided with two index

Successful application of ThermoFit Pro with GMGM reduces inspection probe tooling design and manufacturing time by 40 percent.
GM Casting Engine and Transmission Center, located in Pontiac, Michigan,
had been successfully inspecting parts with ZEISS CMMs (coordinate
measuring machines) for several years and was now looking to accelerate
and globalize the design and manufacture of the custom probe tooling to
be used on the CMMs for a new project spanning across their facilities in
North America. Using the Stylus System Creator and the new ThermoFit Pro
components from ZEISS, GM entered into the era of advanced probe too-
ling using flexible stylus systems and stylus simulations.
For years, offline quality inspection programming has been a well-known
method of developing the launch of production processes. It frees up the
CMM for existing measurements and speeds up the programming process
on a dedicated offline station. But, the design and manufacturing of custom
probe tooling for CMM operation was still time consuming. It required CAD
modeling of many new components. These custom probe tools required a
CAD engineer and a significant amount of time for any last minute changes.
They were also difficult to document and often came with long delivery
terms.
The CMM and gage engineering group of the GM Casting Engine and
Transmission Center is a centralized team of about 10 CMM programmers
and engineers responsible for supporting all of the North American quality
inspection labs for their next generation of 4 cylinder V8 engines. There
are nearly 150 ZEISS CMMs dedicated to this project, mostly ACCURAs and
PRISMOs, at various production facilities in the US, Mexico and Canada.
This team designs CMM probe tooling and writes inspection programs
for this new project and wanted more control over the reproducibility of
components at all locations, reduced design and manufacturing time for
tooling, and simple and quick tooling modifications for product changes.
Carl Zeiss 3D Automation GmbH, part of the metrology division of Carl
Zeiss, first visited the GM Casting Engine and Transmission Center in 2009
and introduced new probe extensions with rotary joint systems. GM liked
the thermal stability and carbon tube design, but was looking for fixed
machined extensions for more control at their remote inspection labs. They
also wanted some interchangeability if a probe configuration change was
needed. For this next generation project, the CMMs they purchased were
specific to the lifecycle of a particular component. Since the lifecycle could
be 5, 10 or more years depending on the product line, they also wanted
durable probe systems that would last and that could potentially be reused
at the end of the project. After collaborating and testing probe tooling
samples with GM, ZEISS 3D Automation completed development of and
launched their next generation probe tooling, called ThermoFit Pro, in 2011.

The GM Casting Engine and Transmission Center started using their first
ThermoFit Pro modules in June of 2011. The new product line enables
GM to build up even the most complex stylus system using the CALYPSO
stylus simulator without the need for typical custom designing in CAD.
Generic angle blocks can be modified in the software to the desired angle
by simply choosing the according angle values. The real angle blocks are
then quickly manufactured from semi-finished parts. The finished angle
blocks can be machined either by ZEISS or if desired by their own tool
shop, as the semi-finished parts are available from stock. Each piece gets
a ZEISS part number for easy documentation and reordering.
No CAD engineer or drawing is needed and everything can be done by
their own application engineer within the Stylus System Creator. “I‘m very
impressed with the development of the CALYPSO simulation and Stylus
System Creator using ThermoFit Pro modules,” says Craig Wegienka, seni-
or manufacturing engineer at GM Casting Engine & Transmission Center.
“I was able to use the Stylus System Creator to create the entire set of
block and head tooling for our project. I simulated each individual probe
configuration in CALYPSO to verify the tooling. The simulation proved that
all tooling would work correctly.”
The library of the Stylus System Creator contains more than 1,200 different
styli, extensions and connecting elements, plus additional tools to create
virtually every kind of custom probe tooling. With the help of different
sized cubes and bars, even the most complex system can be designed and
built quickly. ThermoFit Pro modules have plug-in connections instead of
threads to help avoid angle distortions when exchanging worn styli. Even
whole branches of the stylus systems can be exchanged without having
to readjust angles. GM has about 13 sets of ThermoFit Pro tooling, each
with approximately 15 different configurations. “All of these options and
the ease of use reduce our probe tooling design and manufacture time
by about 40 percent,” states Craig. “It saves us not only time, but also
money because we don’t have to scrap probe components when there
are changes.”
The task for GM to guarantee reproducibility of their products by having
the same quality results - regardless if the parts come from a plant in
Bangalore, Shanghai, Detroit or Sao Paolo - is a big challenge as varying
employee skill levels or the availability of spare parts can cause production
delays. And product design changes require program and probe tool
modifications along with documentation changes. GM can now rely on
the ThermoFit Pro modules and the CALYPSO Stylus System Creator to
globalize quality control programs, reduce product launch time, while also
quickly adapting to any product changes.
