The SDI improves the effectiveness of any organization’s most valuable resource... its people.

The SDI in Action: An IllustrationIn the example to the left, Cory (whose dot is in the Blue or Altruistic-Nurturing Motivational Value System) is likely concerned about the growth and welfare of other people. In conflict situations, Cory is likely to initially be cautious and interested in the facts.

Pat (whose dot is in the Red-Green or Judicious-Competing Motivational Value System) is likely concerned about strategic action and rational competition. In conflict situations, Pat is likely to rise to the challenge and be assertive.

Cory and Pat may value each other for their differences and work effectively together -or- conflict may arise if they view each other’s strengths as weaknesses. Some of the potential sources of conflict in this relationship are: Cory may initially perceive Pat as insensitive, aggressive, or manipulating; Pat may see Cory as overly emotional, too “touchy-feely” or lacking concern for the “big picture.” Sharing their SDI results offers them an opportunity to discuss their relationship and manage current or potential conflict.

SDI® Facilitator Level 1 Certification Singapore

www.personalstrengths.com.sg December 2012

For Whom: Managers, Consultants, HR / OD Professionals, Trainers, Educators, Coaches, and anyone involved in people and organizational development.

Successful organizations understand that effective relationships are important. In fact, the results of an organization can be heavily influenced by the quality of its relationships. Relationship Awareness™ gives organizations and individuals the tools they need to build more effective relationships. It helps them sustain those relationships - not just when things are going well, but also when managing conflict. The Strength Deployment Inventory® (SDI) is the main tool in Relationship Awareness™. The SDI emphasizes a person's strengths in relating to others, and suggests how those strengths may be used to improve relationships. The SDI provides powerful insights into the motivation behind behavior and enables self-discovery that fosters more rewarding relationships in organizations, at home and in society.

SDI® Enabled Business Solutions & Application

Assertiveness Training Career Development Conflict Management Customer Relations Emergency Response Team Training Leadership Training Sales Training Supervisory Skills Team Building Time Management

Relationship Awareness® is premised on four simple yet profound truths: 1. We all do what we do because we want to feel good about ourselves. 2. We tend to take two different approaches to life: a. When we feel that things are going well. b. When we feel that we are faced with opposition or conflict. 3. A "personal weakness" is no more or no less than the overdoing or misapplying of a personal strength. 4. We naturally tend to perceive the behaviors of others through our own filter (our Motivational Value System™) The tools of Relationship Awareness have been used successfully in diverse settings in organizations.

The SDI was developed by psychologist, clinical therapist, educator, and author Elias H. Porter, Ph.D. It is the primary inventory of a suite of inventories based on his Relationship Awareness Theory - a group of ideas that help people to build productive relationships and manage conflict by providing a window into the motivation that drives behavior. Dr. Porter's experience in clinical, industrial, military and governmental settings provided the rich diversity of environments needed to validate a comprehensive theory of relationships and the suite of inventories based on that theory. The awareness of self and others gained from the SDI helps people to improve all types of relationships be they at home, work, school, social or otherwise. He founded Personal Strengths Publishing, Inc. in 1971 and served as President of that company until his death in December, 1987.
