VALENTINE’S GIFT BLAMED FOR CALIF. POWER OUTAGEHUNTINGTON BEACH, Calif. (AP) — A Valentine’s Day gift is be-ing blamed for a power outage in Southern California.
Southern California Edison spokes-man David Song says a helium-filled balloon scored a direct hit on the company’s Fontana substation Tuesday night, knocking out power to 15,099 customers.
Song tells The Press-Enterprise (http://bit.ly/wgrjI7 ) the balloon was likely a Valentine’s gift. He says it dropped into the substation at about 8:40 p.m.
Song says a utility crew rushed to the station and had the power re-stored by 9:51 p.m.
The substation was the second to encounter problems in Southern California on Tuesday night. A Huntington Beach substation went out at 7:42 p.m., affecting 21,285 customers. Song says power was re-
stored there at 10:38 p.m.The cause of that outage wasn’t im-mediately known.
Song says balloon-caused outages occur most often around Valen-tine’s Day and in June during school graduations.

NEW CASTLE, Pa. (AP) — Firefighters in Pennsylva-nia have managed to save 200 pounds of Polish sausage from what they’re calling the best-smelling fire they’ve doused in years.
The New Castle News reports that firefighters responded about 11:30 a.m. Monday when a 20-by-20-foot smoke-house caught fire in the yard of Cash Koszela (koh-ZEL’-uh). He’s a retired meat cutter who’s been smoking his own sausage for about 30 years.
Firefighters say some grease caught fire when the smoke-house got too hot — about 300 degrees.
Koszela says it will cost about $3,000 to replace the smoke-house. It’s actually a tin-lined walk-in cooler fed by smoke piped in from a fire pit.
Assistant Fire Chief David Jo-seph says, “This is definitely the best-smelling fire we’ve seen in a long time.”

EMU ESCAPES FROM VT. FARM, ON THE LAM FOR 5 WEEKS SOUTH HERO, Vt. (AP) — An elusive emu on the lam in Vermont has been amusing residents in com-munities on Lake Champlain.
The 150-pound flightless bird looks like a small ostrich. It has been spotted wandering here and there in Grand Isle and South Hero since it escaped from a local farm five weeks ago.
It was spotted again Friday outside the South Hero elementary school, where it walked by a window of the principal’s office. School worker Steve Berard tried to lasso it with an extension cord, but it broke free.
The emu’s owner tells WCAX-TV (http://bit.ly/yYUT7C ) he bought three emus for his grandchildren but they don’t make great pets.
He’s taken out an ad in a local news-paper saying, “Free emu if you can capture it.”

SOTHEBY’S FINDS HIDDEN SIGNATURE ON BASQUIAT WORK LONDON (AP) — Sotheby’s says it has discovered that grafitti artist Jean-Michel Basquiat secretly signed one of his paintings in invisible ink.
The auction house is selling “Or-ange Sports Figure,” estimated to be worth between 3 million pounds and 4 million pounds ($4.7 million and $6.3 million).
Basquiat, who became a New York art star, signed relatively few of his canvases. But Sotheby’s said ultra-violet light revealed the artist’s name and the date 1982 beneath the layers of paint.
Cheyenne Westphal, head of con-temporary art at Sotheby’s Europe, said Tuesday that “nobody else prob-ably ever knew about this invisible
inscription” — and there could be more on other canvasses.
Basquiat died of a drug overdose in 1988, at age 27. The painting is for sale in London Wednesday.

FUGITIVE RUNS OUT OF GAS, CALLS SHERIFF FOR HELP
ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. (AP) — A 23-year-old college student from New Mexico is scheduled to go to trial for allegedly stealing a small pumpkin worth two dollars.
KOAT-TV (http://bit.ly/wXg7PI ) in Albuquerque, N.M., reports that Lauren Medina will go before a jury and Moriarity Magistrate Judge Steve Jones on Tuesday. She is ac-cused of taking the pumpkin in Oc-tober 2011 from McCall’s Pumpkin
Patch in Moriarty.
Her sister, Annette Atencio, says Me-dina spent $75 on food that day but forgot to pay for the pumpkin she picked up as she was leaving. Atencio says her sister offered to pay but was refused and then handcuffed.
Atencio says she’s in disbelief that the theft charge against her sister was not dropped.
She says her sister could have plead-ed guilty and be given probation, but refused.
