Rotary International Convention

Cararoo Stand Sydney Convention Centre, May 31st -June 4th

Many months of planning and hard work culminated in the Cararoo Foundation

being proudly represented in the hall of Friendship at the recent Rotary

International Convention.

Situated in a very favourable position, the Cararoo stand attracted hundreds of

interested convention goers, who stopped to enquire about the excellent work

being done to provide a brighter future through education to children living in

poverty. The Rotary Club Northlakes Toukley Mini Banner also proved to be a

winner & thanks to all the Rotarians who helped with stand duty.

Our New Image Preparing for the convention gave COO Maurie Schokman the opportunity to

update and rebadge the image of Cararoo. With the generous support of Lyn

Thompson, Suzy Allport and their talented graphic designer Lucas Hoete from LBH

Promotions, the cleverly designed banners, brochures and business cards ensured

Cararoo attracted plenty of attention through its strategic, professional displays.

Not to mention the huge magnum of wine being raffled. This was won by Leticia

Mira-Doll from READ (Respect, Encourage, Adventure, Discipline - a reading

program initiative from the Philippines.)

Claire Atkins, daughter of the late Alan Atkins who helped establish Cararoo , was able to join us for a short time. RAWCS

Rotary Australia World Community Service

(RAWCS) assists Australian Rotary Clubs

develop and manage world community

projects. Through the philanthropic

generosity of the Pink Umbrella Foundation,

10 grants to the value of $2,000 each were

made available for those Rotary clubs

globally supporting one of the 6 areas of

focus. There were over 200 entries.

RAWCS assistance to the Cararoo

Foundation is invaluable .

CONSUL GENERAL SUPPORTS CARAROO

A welcome visitor to the stand was Philippines Consul General,

Anne Jalando-on Louis, who has given strong support since

becoming aware of our organisation. Her willingness to help further

our connections to Filipino groups in Australia give us great hope

that we might be able to develop more links with people who may

partner with us in our mission.

CONNECTIONS The many contacts made during the conference will be followed up in the near

future. Clubs and individuals from all over the world expressed a genuine

interest in supporting the work of the Cararoo Foundation, either as part of

their Club’s International Project or on an individual basis. Exchanging Rotary

mini club banners is a great way to make friendly contact. It’s a long standing

tradition that really is held in high regard around the world.

REFLECTIONS Whilst it was hard work in some ways, the rewards made it all worthwhile. The energy created by being

surrounded by like-minded people, all wanting to make a difference, was uplifting and humbling. The sharing of

ideas and the encouragement given to each other confirmed the world is made up of wonderful people.

The colourful costumes, lively music and general goodwill was a real antidote to the often negative views

presented to us on a daily basis about our world.

Wonderful memories!

A SPECIAL MOMENT & THANKYOU FROM

CARAROO COO MAURIE SCHOKMAN Since starting the original annual feeding program in Merville, Paranaque back in 1998 with a group of Australian

business colleagues , and then establishing the Cararoo Foundation for EDUCATION back in 2006, I need to thank

many people for the help they have given me in getting the Foundation to a point where we are proud to take a

stand at a prestigious event like the Rotary International Convention and have many wonderful people from all

over the world visit and have a chat about how we got started “can you come to our country and help us establish

such a program” “you must be proud of what has been achieved” etc.

None of this would have been possible without our great sponsors, supporters, Rotary Club Northlakes Toukley,

RAWCS and not forgetting our Corporate friends.

The Convention also had a very SPECIAL moment for me. Back in 2005 when I decided to establish a Foundation

that focused on EDUCATION I had no idea what shape this enterprise would take. After approaching many

Australian organisations I found RAWCS, who happen to be in Parramatta, just a few streets from my office. I

called the office and spoke with Warren Bond from the Rotary Club of Padstow about my project, we met

discussed the project in more detail with others from Padstow and on a trip to the Philippines for another project

Warren and Trevor Withnall visited our project and on returning agreed and proceeded and helped in establishing

our RAWCS registration. This was really the turning point in our project. Trevor was also the first person to

donation into our RAWCS account, making a sizable donation which allowed us to start funding some of the start-

up cost.

So it was a wonderful experience to catch-up with Trevor at the Convention. Thanks Trevor for helping us get

started.

A Special Moment!
