Professor Richard Wiseman Professor David Wilson WHY DO WE PUNISH ? Professor Wilson will discuss the major justifications for imprisonment. Do these justifications stand up to scrutiny? Why does England and Wales chose to imprison more people than our European neighbours – are the English any more criminogenic than the French, Swedes, Poles, Belgians etc? Richard started as a professional magician. He is currently Professor in the Public Understanding of Psychology at the University of Hertfordshire. He has written over 60 academic articles and several books, including The Luck Factor and manages one of the most successful channels on YouTube – Quirkology. The Luck Factor Why do some people lead happy successful lives whilst others face repeated failure and sadness? Why are some people always in the right place at the right time, while others are always unlucky? Professor Richard Wiseman has researched the topic and worked with some of the world’s luckiest and unluckiest people to answer these fascinating questions. Discover the results of his work and find out how ‘The Luck Factor’ can change your life. Professor Wilson is one of the country’s leading Criminologists and is a well know author and broadcaster. This talk will explore through demonstrations some of the puzzles of perception like ‘why do gargoyles look so ugly?’, ‘why is a sad song sad?’ and ‘what colour is Wednesday?’ Cara Flanagan, author and conference organiser. The psychology of successful revision. Stop trying to stuff things into your brain and instead learn to get them back out. You’re studying psychology so ought to know about the real secrets of successful revision. KEYNOTE TALK Memory matters People can be led to believe that they remember the past differently than it really was. Through suggestion they can be led to remember details that were different from actual events, and even to falsely remember entire events that never occurred. False memories have been planted in the minds of ordinary people for events that would have been traumatic had they happened (such as assault or near drowning). Moreover these false beliefs have consequences for people, sometimes affecting their later thoughts, intentions and behaviours. For example, leading people to believe they got sick eating a particular food causes a later avoidance of that food. There will be a Q & A session at the end of Professor Loftus’ talk.
