Engineered Timber FAQQ: What is Scotia? Why do I need it?

Q: I don’t want to use Scotia, are there other options?

Q: Why do I need a 10mm expansion gap around my floor?

Q: Is National Tiles Timber Flooring suitable in wet areas?

Q: Will my National Tiles Timber Flooring scratch?

A: Scotia, sometimes referred to as quad or beading, is a timber moulding trim used on the base of walls to cover the expansion gap required when installing any floating floor. National Tiles stocks more than 30 colours of Scotia to ensure a close match to your National Tiles Timber Flooring.

A: Yes, skirting boards can be used. In a new house it is best to install the flooring before the skirting is installed. In existing houses, the skirting boards will need to be removed, the flooring installed and then the skirting boards reinstalled. The skirting boards act in the same way as Scotia; covering the expansion gap required when installing any floating floor.

A: All floating floors expand and contract with changes in temperature and humidity, the 10mm gap stops the floor from expanding into the wall, causing the floor to raise in the middle and possibly fail.

A: No, National Tiles Timber Flooring is water resistant, but it is not waterproof. Prolonged exposure to water may cause damage to the floor.

A: In short, yes, like all timber floors, National Tiles Timber Flooring will scratch if care is not taken. National Tiles Timber Flooring has been produced with a sacrificial wear layer that is designed to scratch instead of the timber itself. To avoid scratches, it is recommended to remove your shoes, place felt pads under any furniture, place door mats at all entry points to your home and regularly clean the floor to remove small stones and dirt.

Q: Will high heels mark my National Tiles Timber Flooring?

Q: What is the warranty on National Tiles Timber Flooring and what does it cover?

Q: Can I sand and refinish National Tiles Timber Flooring?

Q: I have allergies, is National Tiles Timber Flooring suitable?

Q: What is VOC – E1?

Q: Where is National Tiles Timber Flooring Produced?

A: National Tiles Timber Flooring can be indented by stiletto style heels, the smaller the point on the heel, the more likely timber flooring will be indented. Wedge and block type heels are far less likely to indent timber flooring.

A: National Tiles offers a 25 year residential warranty and a 5 year commercial warranty on the Aspen Oak range of National Tiles Timber Flooring. Please refer to the warranty flyer for information on what is covered by the warranty.

A: The sanding back of National Tiles Timber Flooring will void the warranty. It does have 3.2mm Veneer that can be sanded back. However, sanding is unlikely to be required due to the sacrificial ware layer applied during manufacturing that resists scratching.

A: Yes, National Tiles Timber Flooring is easy to keep clean, will not add dust to the home and is rated VOC – E1.

A: VOC stands for Volatile Organic Compound, VOCs are released by wood based materials, some VOCs are dangerous to human health. As such, the amount of VOCs released by a product is tested and rated, E1 represents a level of VOCs released that has been classed as safe.

A: The Veneer is 3.2mm of European Oak, sourced from Europe. It is then sent to Malaysia for construction.

Q: Why are the different colours of Aspen Oak Timber different prices?

Q: Why is National Tiles Timber Flooring more expensive than other timber floors on the market?

Q: How long does National Tiles Timber Flooring need to acclimatise for? Why does it need to acclimatise?

Q: How much wastage do I need to allow?

A: Each Aspen Oak timber colour is stained in different ways, the more complicated the staining process, the more the timber costs.

A: National Tiles Timber Flooring has been specially selected for the harsh Australian climate. Our Timber floor has a 3.2mm Aspen Oak Veneer, a Hevea core and a balancing layer. This allows the entire board to expand and contract a lot more evenly. Traditional floating timber floors use a plywood core that can separate from the Veneer in environments with high temperature and humidity changes, like those experienced in Australia.

A: We recommend that National Tiles Timber Flooring is left to acclimatise for 48 hours. The flooring is stored in a warehouse that is likely to have a different ambient temperature and humidity to your house. All timber products expand with higher temperatures and higher humidity levels, they conversely contract in lower temperatures and lower humidity levels. Leaving National Tiles Timber Flooring for a period of time in an environment that is similar to which it will be installed will stop the floor from excessively expanding or contract after installation.

A: National Tiles recommends 7% wastage. Some complicated installations with several small areas and multiple angles may require a higher wastage, or an installation with large open areas may require a lower wastage. It is also recommended to have one or two packs left over, just in case a board or section need to be repaired in the future.

Q: Does National Tiles Timber Flooring require underlay?

Q: Can I install National Tiles Timber Flooring over a heated slab?

A: National Tiles Floating Timber Flooring can be installed over any flat and solid floor. Floor preparation will be required if the sub floor is not solid and or flat.

A: The subfloor must not have any variation greater than 3 millimetres over a 2 metre area. If the subfloor has any high or low points beyond this, they must be levelled prior to installation.

A: Sub floor preparation (prep) is a generic term used to describe any sub floor levelling required for flooring installation. The sub floor is the substrate that the National Tiles Timber Flooring will be installed over, this is normally concrete, tiles or yellow tongue particle board. The preparation normally completed is a self-levelling pour to fill low points, or a floor grind to remove high points.

A: Yes, the underlay provides several functions, firstly it reduces moisture rising from the subfloor into the Timber Flooring. It reduces noise produced when walking on the floor. It also gives the floor a more natural feel when walked on.
