Improper Use of Generators, Heating or Cooking Devices Can be Source of Exposure As outdoor winter tempera- tures drop and the risk for carbon monoxide poisoning increases, Kentuckians are urged to be aware of the dangers of carbon monoxide (CO) poisoning due to improper use of heating or cook- ing devices. “Carbon monoxide poisoning can be deadly and should be tak- en seriously,” said Steve Davis, M.D., acting Kentucky Depart- ment for Public Health (DPH) commissioner. “We urge Ken- tuckians to take steps to prevent exposure to carbon monoxide by avoiding the use of gasoline- powered stoves or charcoal grills as indoor sources of heat. It can be a matter of life or death.” In 2010, there were 206 emer- gency room visits for Kentucky residents related to carbon mon- oxide exposures, he said. Items such as kerosene or pro- pane gas stoves and ovens have been used as alternative heat sources indoors, sometimes with tragic results. These devices emit a colorless, odorless gas, called carbon monoxide, as a by-prod- uct, and improper use can lead to severe cases of carbon monoxide poisoning. DPH advises Ken- tuckians to follow these steps taken from guidelines issued by the National Center for Environ- mental Health to prevent carbon monoxide poisoning: Install a battery-operated carbon monoxide detector in your home or replace the bat- tery when you change the time on your clocks each spring and fall for daylight saving time. If the detector sounds, leave your home immediately and call 911. On average, carbon monoxide detectors should be replaced about every five years. Don’t use a generator, char- coal grill, camp stove or other gasoline or charcoal-burning device inside your home, base- ment or garage or outside near a window. Don’t run a car or truck inside a garage attached to your house, even if you leave the door open. Don’t use a fireplace that isn’t properly vented. Don’t heat your house with a gas oven. Be sure to carefully follow manufacturers’ instructions for kerosene heaters, making sure the wick is set at the proper level and is clean. Ensure your kero- sene heater is only operated in a well-vented area. Kerosene heaters require 1-K grade kero- sene fuel and the fuel should be clear, not colored or cloudy. One of the biggest items on the agenda was the organizations financial report. “We were awarded $15,600 for the total year (July 2011- June 2012),” Coordinator Karen Griffith said. “We only received half of that money to begin with.” The organization, which is funded with tobacco settlement money, had less money because fewer tobacco products were being sold. In order to compensate for budget shortfalls, Griffith suggested a pay cut for the board members. “I don’t do this for the little money I get but I have told Nan that I would take $50 less per check, saving $100 per month,” Griffith said. “That would be a part that we could reallocate.” Nan Herald, chair, had a different proposal. “If we decrease everything we offer the schools and all proposed mini-grants by $50 each, that would be a way that if they end up cutting us by $2,000 that would just about have made that up,” Herald said. Herald then put forth the motion, which was quickly seconded before being passed. ASAP will have a special meeting in February, when it has a better idea of how much money it will be receiving, to discuss further budget and mini- grant issues.
