TIN moved to new offices on 13 January, next to the parliament building at Chakkubhakku Marg in New Baneshwor. With almost double office space, underground car parking and continuous sunlight, the new office has proved to be very convenient for staff as well as stakeholders. Thanks to advance planning and proper preparation, the team has now settled well in the new location.

THE POWER OF STAYING HUNGRYProf. Dr. Govinda KC, a senior doctor at the Tribhuvan University Teaching Hospital started a fast-unto-death as he was unhappy with irregular practices in the health sector. Dr. KC ended his 14 day fast after the government agreed to meet his 3 major demands - complete political non-interference in the matters related to the health sector, appointing Dean at the Institute of Medicine (IoM) on the basis of seniority and credibility and granting University affiliation solely on the basis of set criteria. Appreciating Dr. KC’s effort, TIN expressed its solidarity with Dr. KC’s demand for transparency and accountability in the health sector through issuing a separate press release. In the above chart, deep blue and green yellow color signifies our clients in terms of gender. While four different location types - rural, semi-urban, unknown and urban are split vertically, the methods of contact - telephone, walk-in, post and email are split horizontally.

ALAC FACTS & FIGURES

ALAC DP has successfully completed the first phase and has entered into the second phase by including 6 more district partners in Dhadhing, Surkhet, Kailali, Kathmandu, Gulmi and Morang. Mr. Bishnu Bahadur KC, TIN President, recently inaugurated these centers. With the opening of new centers around the country, the ALAC-DP team will be able to extend its outreach, bettering service delivery in government offices.

MEETING FAMILIESThis January our FK fellows, Ms. Nisha Aryal and Mr. Haritha Dahanayaka, after working in their host organization for 6 months went back home to visit their friends and family. As part of their contract, their trip was covered by the FK home visit grant. Although during the start of the exchange, it compels a lot of goodbyes to the near and dear ones back home, but it balances by meeting new colleagues and friends from a different social and cultural background. Nevertheless, the fellows are always excited to go back home to meet their families. After a 3-4 weeks break and spending quality time with their families, both have resumed their work in their respective host countries.

"After basking in the sun for 6 months in beautiful Sri Lanka, I came home to chilly, cold Nepal on a 15 days break. The day I arrived, it was chilly and gloomy, a perfect weather to treat yourself with hot steamy mo:mos. Instead of going home straight, I decided to take a little detour to one of my favourite restaurant in Jawalakhel and treat myself with momos. The food in Sri Lanka is delicious, however when it comes to food relish, nothing can beat momos. My 15 days in Nepal was quite relaxing spent at home, as I spent my days enjoying a quiet, blissful family get-togethers."Nisha Aryal

"After completing 6 months in Nepal, I had 3 exciting weeks with my family and friends in Sri Lanka. In the first week, I went on a trip around the country with my family. After which, I invited my friend Nure Alam (FK Exchange fellow for TIB to TISL) to my place and we went for a 2 days sightseeing trip with my other friends. But in the third week, I got extremely busy with my sister's wedding as well as for my visa work for Nepal. During the visit, I also visited TISL office and met my office colleagues and shared my experience in Nepal. It was a nice and exciting time for me and my family."Haritha Dahanayaka

"I completed a three-month placement with TI Nepal as part of my MBA programme at the Kathmandu University School of Management. It was a valuable opportunity to apply the academic theories that I have learned during my course to real situations. This especially applied since my specialization is project management: a field very relevant to TIN's operating model.

During the course of the placement I gained a lot of valuable professional experience and was involved in a variety of activities including redrafting the organisational strategy, budget planning and research. However, my major study was a review of the functional strategies adopted by the organisation: financial, human resources, operations, procurement and marketing. Based on this, I was able to make recommendations to the Executive Director. I would like to thank those at TIN for this opportunity and for being such welcoming and supportive colleagues."

"I have been working as an intern at TI Nepal for the last few weeks, working with colleagues from across all their programmes to put together a proposal for funding that details planned activities for the next four years. As a former Civil Servant in the UK, I was keen to gain experience of working in the civil society sphere and the Executive Director of TIN has been happy to give me the freedom to pick up other small projects and

pieces of work as I begin to understand the organization.

I have been struck by the calm and professional working atmosphere in the office, whilst all the staff have been friendly and supportive as I settle in. Nepal itself is a beautiful country; thus far I have limited my sightseeing to the many attractions within the Kathmandu Valley, but I plan to venture further afield into the Himalayas in the coming weeks."

Over the last few months TIN has supplemented its regular staff by offering internship opportunities to young people.

IA DISTRICT VISITTIN’s 3 affiliated organizations at Birgunj, Siraha and Sindhuli are organizing an interaction program on promoting Integrity and Accountability with the presence of local level governing bodies, media, political parties, civil society organization, general people and TIN representatives from 9 to 12 February. TIN team comprising of Mr. Bishnu Bahadur KC, Mr. Bharat Bahadur Thapa, Dr. Devendra Raj Pandey, Dr. Ram Dayal Rakesh, Mr. Rama Krishna Regmi, Mr. Ashish Thapa and Mr. Mohan Budhathoki are planning a 4 day trip to attend the program.

NICSA REPORT LAUNCHNational Integrity Study 2013 Report undertaken by NICSA is to be launched in April The study is the fourth in its series and highlights the gap between law and practice in the anti-corruption position, activities and actions of a variety of sectors including government, anti-corruption agencies, private sector, civil society and media. The purpose of this project is to inspire effective leadership to reform in anti-corruption measures and to reinvigorate political will to maximize the potential of the national integrity system.
