Give them 10-15 minutes to put together a short skit about the Ewells and how they think the Ewells are viewed by society.

Present the skits. After each skit discuss what message you think the

actors were trying to get across. Did they do a good job? What do you think they were trying to prove?

cards, string, scissors Procedure: Give each child 14 index cards and 7

sticks,

and 28 pieces of string (27 short, 1 long) Attach 2 cards to the end of each stick with a short piece of string. Then attach each card to the middle of another stick (with the cards on it) so it looks like the model shown below.On the 2 top cards, write down 2 feelings (one on each card) of how Mayella felt during her trial. Going down, describe her feelings more in depth, being very specific on the 3rd row of cards.

Have everyone present their model and have a class discussion on how the Ewells must feel.

could/would be used against her. Also, Atticus wanted

to make a statement that would tell him a clue of who

really did the crime.

you be thinking? Who do you think is the person that

should be convicted? Remember to think back to that

time period. Sample Answer: During that time period,

even if a white man was convicted of a crime they

wouldn’t be charged as much as a colored person

would. The judge is probably thinking of all of the

possibilities of who did the crime, and pondering in his

head on who should be convicted. The judge might be

thinking that Tom is guilty because he is colored, or he

could be thinking that Mr. Ewell is guilty because of

Mayella’s false testimony.

3. Theorize why it may be important that Mayella was

banged up

on the right side of the face, and how it relates to who

should be convicted. Sample Answer: Tom Robinson

has a crippled left arm, so it would have been very hard

to hit her effectively on the right side of her face. In

order to be beat on the right the beater would have to

be a left-handed person, and Mr. Ewell is left-handed.
