In-Depth Questions

1. Determine why Atticus kept asking repetitive questions

such as, “Are you sure you never saw a doctor?”.

2. Suppose you were the judge of this case. What would

you be thinking? Who do you think is the person that

Page 29: “To Kill A Mockingbird” - mockingbirdguide - home · Web viewBy Harper Lee Lesson Plan Chapter 17-20 “To Kill A Mockingbird” By Harper Lee Lesson Plan Chapter 17 Discuss If

should be convicted? Remember to think back to that

time period.

3. Theorize why it may be important that Mayella was

banged up

on the right side of the face, and how it relates to who

should be convicted.

“To Kill A Mockingbird”Chapter 17

In-Depth Questions

1. Determine why Atticus kept asking repetitive questions

such as, “Are you sure you never saw a doctor?”.

Sample Answer: To trick her into saying something that

could/would be used against her. Also, Atticus wanted

Page 30: “To Kill A Mockingbird” - mockingbirdguide - home · Web viewBy Harper Lee Lesson Plan Chapter 17-20 “To Kill A Mockingbird” By Harper Lee Lesson Plan Chapter 17 Discuss If

to make a statement that would tell him a clue of who

really did the crime.

2. Suppose you were the judge of this case. What would

you be thinking? Who do you think is the person that

should be convicted? Remember to think back to that

time period. Sample Answer: During that time period,

even if a white man was convicted of a crime they

wouldn’t be charged as much as a colored person

would. The judge is probably thinking of all of the

possibilities of who did the crime, and pondering in his

head on who should be convicted. The judge might be

thinking that Tom is guilty because he is colored, or he

could be thinking that Mr. Ewell is guilty because of

Mayella’s false testimony.

3. Theorize why it may be important that Mayella was

banged up

on the right side of the face, and how it relates to who

should be convicted. Sample Answer: Tom Robinson

has a crippled left arm, so it would have been very hard

to hit her effectively on the right side of her face. In

order to be beat on the right the beater would have to

In-Depth Questions

1. Infer as to why Mayella is so afraid of Atticus, and felt

“To Kill A Mockingbird”Chapter 18

In-Depth Questions

1. Infer as to why Mayella is so afraid of Atticus, and felt

offended by every little thing that he said. Sample

Answer: She was afraid because she was being really

embarrassed, and she doesn’t have any friends or fit in

anywhere and Atticus wasn’t really helping. It hurt her

and she was really ashamed.

2. Pretend that you were Mayella Ewell. What would it be

like if you had no friends, and didn’t fit into any social

group? Sample Answer: It would be really hard because

she didn’t fit into the black community because she’s

white, and she doesn’t fit in the white community

because she is dirty and uneducated. She has no real

place in the world.

3. Asses Mayella’s testimony. Do you think it was truthful?

Why

or why not? Sample Answer: No. She seems unsure

about her statements, and there is a lot of evidence

against her.

“To Kill A Mockingbird”Chapter 19

In-Depth Questions

1. Develop a theory as to why it is suspicious that Mayella

had been saving up nickels to send to her siblings to

town the very day the crime was committed. Explain.

Sample Answer: Mayella might have been planning to

send the children to town to get them out, so that she

could invite Tom in and kiss him as Tom claims.

2. Determine why it was important and dramatic that Tom

Robinson felt bad for Mayella. Sample Answer: In those

days it was a big deal if a colored person felt bad for a

white person because the white have it better than the

colored people, and if you felt bad for a white person

then it was considered unethical and rude.

3. Formulate a hypothesis as to why Tom didn’t want to

push Mayella out of the way. Sample Answer: Tom

didn’t want to push her because he’s colored, and

colored people really weren’t supposed to come in

Page 38: “To Kill A Mockingbird” - mockingbirdguide - home · Web viewBy Harper Lee Lesson Plan Chapter 17-20 “To Kill A Mockingbird” By Harper Lee Lesson Plan Chapter 17 Discuss If

Answer: It gives him an excuse to hang out with the

colored people. People say that the only reason that he

associates with the colored people is because he is

drunk.

2. Evaluate the statement. Mr. Raymond said, ”I try to

give them a reason, you see. It helps folks if they can

latch onto a reason.” How does this apply to our society

today? Sample Answer: People in society today need a

reason for things that they don’t understand. Many

people judge other people because they don’t have a

reason for their behavior.

3. Conclude why Mr. Raymond tell the children his deepest

darkest secrets, and then tells them that, “You’re children

and you can understand it.” Sample Answer: He thinks

that the children are so innocent and they won’t judge

him the way that most adults do. Also, they can

understand what he’s going through because kids go

through it, too.
