Dear Ambassador Rice and Mr. Pielemeier,

We are a national coalition of organizations from Alaska to Florida collectively representing over 100,000 people in the United States. Together, we are calling upon your office to develop a National Action Plan to implement the United Nations Guiding Principles (UNGPs) on Business and Human Rights.

As you know, the United States Government has been deeply involved in the development of the Protect, Respect, and Remedy Framework and the complementary UNGPs since the beginning of this process. In 2011, the UN Human Rights Council, with the United States as an active member, endorsed the UNGPs, signaling a US Government commitment to follow through on implemention. However since that time, over two years, there has been no progress on developing a National Action Plan and no meaningful efforts have been taken to hold multi-national corporations accountable to the UNGPs. Together, we represent farmers, Indigenous peoples, agricultural workers, and others on the frontlines of the food system, as well as individuals from around the country who attest that our human rights1 have been violated by the largest pesticide and agricultural biotechnology multi-national corporations in the world: Monsanto, Syngenta, Bayer, BASF, Dow, and DuPont. We share here (see attached) a few snapshots from among many personal stories of harm from corporate misconduct.

The UNGPs provide a framework to prevent and mitigate such violations, to holding corporate violators accountable, and to provide redress for victims. It is imperative that these principles are implemented promptly and effectively in order to put an end to on-going human rights violations. The harm to our communities must end and protections put in place to protect our future generations. In the meantime, corporate actors with proven records of human rights violations should be held accountable and their right to do business rescinded or suspended, as appropriate. We call upon your office, as protectors of human rights within the United States and globally, to take action to strongly enforce the UNGPs. We are committed to seeing these principles enacted and we are ready and willing to collaborate with your office in any way that is useful, to ensure that the United States’ responsibilities to the UNHRC and to the global community are fulfilled. I want to be toxic-free! We are being poisoned. Indigenous communities like mine have been harmed more than any other people on the planet. Chemicals produced around the world travel in the air and water. They end up in the Arctic and into our traditional foods, which we have relied on for generations for our well-being. We need to fix the chemical laws to protect communities like mine. This is my nephew - I want to protect our future generations from toxic exposures - those pesticides are sprayed somewhere else, and in a few days the global air currents transport those chemicals to the Arctic where they are persistent organic pollutants and bioaccumulate in our traditional foods, and in our bodies. We are being polluted with out our consent - a violation of our human rights.

The impacts of the Big 6 pesticide corporations can be felt all the way up in Alaska. Facing exposure to many of the same pesticides (a very persistent class of pesticides known as organochlorines, the class to which DDT belongs), Indigenous families in Alaska are eating traditional foods contaminated with chemicals that were not made or used in Alaska. The evil six violate human rights by distorting, ignoring, manipulating, or shelving research (and their damage-control-attempts to discredit honest researchers brave enough to publish their good science) that clearly show that the Precautionary Principle of moving slowly before introducing very dangerous components in seed and food should be implemented, rather than using the outdated “risk assessment” tool, that allows them to push their corporate agenda on the human population without proper safeguards. Corporate profits do not equal human health, and it time for the US government to guarantee the true rights of its citizens, and quit protecting and supporting such ill planned endeavors that are far from proven being safe for humanity.

become a prisoner in my home or vehicle. I’m forced from my home, to survive, when neighbors spray. I suffer extreme and agonizing injuries with every exposure. The suffering that is forced on me violates the Geneva convention. I lost my job and my secondary income from farming. My crops and livestock are contaminated. I can’t safely eat my own produce. I’m denied access to all public spaces. I can’t attend family events, or go to grocery stores. I can’t eat most food in them. I can’t access printed material, or inks. I’m denied medical treatment, emergency services and even protection from law enforcement and the courts. I’m forced to submit to further exposures because the government protects agriculture over people. The Big 6 have grossly influenced our governments to secure those protections. They violated me.

I have been Type 1 Diabetic since age 9. Diabetes has been linked to endocrine-disrupting chemicals found in pesticides and chemicals manufactured by the Big 6. I did not choose to put these chemicals in my body. The Big 6 put them in my food without telling me!

As PAN’s membership manager, I often hear from members and other individuals who have experienced pesticide spray incidents. Many have trips to the emergency room from these incidents. When they return home and try to find out what to do so this does not happen again to someone else, they hit a wall — corporations have made it difficult to put restrictions on spraying that harms bystanders. We need to start holding the companies that manufacture these products accountable.

How many more people have to die before it becomes WRONG in the eyes of Government and Congress that Monsanto their ilk can run rough-shod through our natural resources, poisoning them, destroying them or worse, playing GOD with them to make a buck?? So many people feel that they are helpless to make a difference - but if we all stand together and finally speak out, our voices will drown out the dollar hungry corporations that are slowly killing our Earth and in turn, US! I am a mother and Community Health Researcher in St. Lawrence Island, with Alaska Community Action on Toxics. I’m in this photo in Washington DC where I traveled with one of the youth from our village of Savoonga. Together, we speak out for our indigenous people in the Arctic who are the people most affected to the harmful chemicals such as pesticides produced by Monsanto and the Big6,. These toxic chemicals are transported by air and ocean currents. In our community alone we see the sad reality of toxic chemicals by the amount of people who have died and are fighting cancer today. We see the changes in our traditional foods, which are also being affected by chemicals. We see the babies being born with birth defects and babies born prematurely. It is time to hold the Big6 pesticide corporations accountable. You cannot put a price on human health.

I am an advocate for people with autism and other learning disabilities in Alaska. It is heartbreaking to see the struggles parents deal with when their children suffer from learning disabilities and autism. It’s time to hold the “Big6” accountable for poisoning people across the generations for continuing to produce and export banned pesticides which cause significant harm to people. Stop exporting pesticides which are banned in the US to other countries. Stop polluting our children.
