The Family FestivalThe organisers of this boutique family festival have been overwhelmed by how many babies are attending the event and have responded by announcing more programming and better facilities for their very youngest festival goers.

With the support of returning sponsor Weleda Baby this August parents will be able to take their little ones along to festival favourites like baby yoga, baby massage, choral lullabies and clay babies. Joining them in 2013 will be; Shiny, an interactive dance experience for babies and toddlers; bubble hour, the shiny sensory tent and shake, rattle & roll a fabulous music making session.

Just So Festival in Cheshire are out to prove that being the parents of the very youngest children shouldn’t stop you enjoying some festival fun this summer, and have announced that they will be expanding and improving their celebrated Peekaboo baby area in 2013.

Facilities will be better than ever with a baby change tent with free biodegradeable nappies and wipes, info about the Go Real Nappy Campaign from Cheshire East Recycling team, a beautiful breastfeeding boudoir sponsored by Medela where you can relax, feed your babies and warm your bottles, a baby bathtime tent, sling library and baby café.

Spring time is upon us (allegedly) but along with the long days and sunshine, comes an altogether less welcome companion for many - hay fever. There are two forms of hay fever (or Allergic Rhinitis) – one is seasonal and the other happens all year round. Year round hay fever is normally caused by house dust mites, moulds or pets, whereas seasonal hay fever is caused by pollen - either tree pollen in spring time or grass/weed pollen in summer (or both).

There are effective treatments out there, and we would hope to achieve normal quality of life for children during these times. If hay fever is distressing you or your child, you should see an allergy specialist who will help you determine the cause of your child’s hay fever (with either a skin prick test or blood test) and prescribe treatment.

Here are some tips to alleviate suffering:

1. Take an antihistamine every day throughout the season, but make sure it’s a non-sedating one. Don’t take Piriton – there’s no sense in making your child sleepy all day long!

How to handle childhood

Hay Fever2. If your child is on asthma treatment, they should take their brown puffers (inhaled steroids) regularly and keep ventolin at hand in case they get wheezy.

3. Nasal steroids are very effective and should be used in children who are still suffering from persistent blocked nose despite taking antihistamines. There are safer ones out there that young children can use every day, though prolonged use might need a paediatrician review. It’s vital to squirt the outside of the nose in each nostril and not sniff too hard, as you want the medicine to remain in the nose for 10-15 minutes for it to work.

4. If your child is still suffering, there is immunotherapy which can be given under the tongue and is generally quite safe. This is only available privately and I offer this treatment.

5 Avoiding the cause of the hay fever is the other form of treatment but can be hard in the summer!
