Challenge: Was war inevitable by 1914? If so, why? Explain fully.

Working in groups of four you will research why the MAIN causes led to war starting in 1914.

Each person should spend 5 minutes researching their own section and answering the questions.

You will then have 15 minutes to teach the rest of your group about your section until everyone in the group has a completed sheet.

In 1911 Germany sent naval ships into France’s territory and this action nearly caused a World War. In order to keep Germany happy, they were given a small piece of land in the French Congo), the Bosnian Crisis (In 1871 Austria­Hungary took over Bosnia­Herzegovina and it became a part of the Otooman Empire, this angered the Serbian people as they wanted independence) or Mobilisation (Serbia wanted freedom from the Ottoman Empire and prepared its military forces)

Challenge: Why can this event be described as the trigger point of World War One?

Whilst the MAIN causes are important, World War One would not have happened if the trigger hadn't been lit. However, on 28th June 1914 everything changed when Archduke Franz Ferdinand of Austria was assassinated (shot dead).

Task 4: What was the impact of the assassination of Archduke Franz Ferdinand?

Challenge: 'The main cause of World War One was the system of Alliances' How far do you agree with this question? Write a despite conclusion to answer this question.

You are a British Journalist based in Sarajevo. You have been asked to write the newspaper front page for the day after the assassination. Using what you have learnt in the video, and the additional information sheet, write a newspaper article discussing what has happened and what impact it might have.

Task 5: What did the European nations want to achieve in World War One?

Challenge: Which country do you think is most to blame for starting World War One? Explain fully.

Prior to World War One starting, the major countries of the world had already been split into two groups.

Germany, Italy and Austria­Hungary made up the Triple Alliance. Great Britain, France and Russia made up the Triple Entente. Task: It is important to understand why these countries would want to go to war with each other. Go around the room and fill in the sections of your map by reading why the different countries disliked or supported each other.
