ITALIA.IT Italia.it is the official website for tourism in Italy, sponsored by the Italian Government. Its principal objective is that of being a knowledge source on the places, attractions and services relevant to Italian tourism. To this end, the Official Website for Tourism in Italy avails itself of the technical contribution of ACI Informatica - Automobile Club d'Italia, and of an editorial team under Unicity S.p.A.. Both entities are coordinated by the Office for Tourism Administration and by the Italian Ministry for Cultural Affairs and Tourism (MIBACT), in collaboration with the Italian State Tourism Board (ENIT).

The website Italia.it has been at the center of numerous reshufflings over the last decade. It currently offers information on services relevant to traveling in Italy - required documents, diplomatic missions, weather, currency, etc. - and a series of cultural, artistic and other touristic content for the entire Bel Paese, including news and events, and historical and environmental descriptions (all of which is also visible on mobile). A significant section of the site is devoted to geographical, cultural, architectonic, and gastronomic descriptions of every Region and Province of the country. Correlated maps, museums, monuments and places of art are linked from each page, so that users can click for instant information on just about every site and touristic attraction of interest.

Currently Italia.it and its role in the valorization of Italian tourism fall under the supervision of MIBACT.

How Tourism is managed in Italy

• Italian Ministry of Cultural Heritage and Activities and of Tourism – MIBACT

• Dario Franceschini is the new Minister since February 2014

• Latest development: LEGISLATIVE DECREE 23 May 2011, n. 79: it radically changes the title V of the Constitution, relating to local authorities, by assigning to the Regions the full legislative and administrative autonomy in tourism: not a great solution!

• ENIT – National Tourist Board (is closing down) The Italian State Tourism Agency (ENIT - Ente Nazionale Italiano per iI Turismo) pursues the objective of promoting Italy as a destination and its natural and cultural heritage. It also carries out studies and publications, develops marketing and promotion strategies aimed at supporting the Italian tourist sector, in coordination with local authorities and other stakeholders.

Regional Tourist Boards

How Tourism is organized

The Department of Tourism carries out the following tasks:

• elaborates and defines the national tourism policies;

• adopts measures for the tourism sector, as well as for planning and management of structural funds;

• provides helps and incentives to develop tourism demand;

• promotes investments both in Italy and abroad;

• delivers certifications and authorisations to foreign professionals;

• manages relations with international organizations and participates in the elaboration and adoption of EU legislation.

City Tax in Italy since Jan. 2011

With the introduction of city taxes throughout various cities in Italy, guests are obliged to pay this tax directly to their hotel, either upon arrival or at check-out. The tax depends on the city, the star rating, the length of the stay and on the guest age.

The Law 23/2011 specifies that the revenue from the tax of stay must be "intended to finance interventions in the field of tourism, maintenance, use and recovery of cultural heritage and local environment and their local public services." However, the survey conducted by the National Observatory on City Tax cured by the study center Panorama Tourism is especially evident that the municipalities are struggling to state clearly that the investments carried out with the proceeds of the tax. Certainly there has been a significant diversity in the management of such funds: in most cases the government manages these funds in a manner independently, without consultation with the specific associations.
