The oldest business district in Kansas is turning 125! In 1889, a simple book store sat on the cor- ner of a muddy, desolate street where students came from miles away to locate textbooks and school supplies. Over one hundred years later, that book store is the hub of a thriving shopping and dining district in Manhattan, Kansas. With 25 stores , 39 restaurants and numerous bars located in this area, it is one of the most common attrac- tions of The Little Apple ® . Join us in helping Aggieville celebrate their 125th Birthday by attending the Birthday Street Fair and Dance on Saturday, September 20th, 2014 in the heart of Aggieville. It will be the perfect scene for family and friends to celebrate the life of one of our favorite community areas. Some events will include a Maker Faire and craft festival, the first ever Ferris Wheel in Aggieville, an antique car show, a State Fair food cook-off, a giant donut birthday cake, performing bands in Triangle Park, K-State athletes showing off their skills in funny sports competitions, and historical tours of the business district. All of these fun events lead up to the main evening attraction: lighting up the streets of Aggieville. The entire length of Moro Street in Aggieville will have lights strung back and forth from all the businesses, creating an ultimate face lift to the already beautiful district. These lights will remain to showcase the charming vibe of Aggieville. Along with all of these entertaining events, the Aggieville 125 Committee is urging the commu- nity to consider making donations in a fundrais- ing effort to fix parking, sidewalk conditions and streetscape. This wonderful district has existed and grown for 125 years, with hopes that it will continue to thrive for years to come. For more information on the history behind this area, check out “Aggieville 1889-1989: 100 Years of the Aggieville Tradition”, by Dan Walter available at Varney’s Book Store in Aggieville.
