Everyone likes positive recognition when they get it. Recognition comes in all sorts of ways and means different things to different people. Since European settlement, Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people have often been treated unfairly by other Australians. The lack of recognition still inhibits some Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people from feel-ing valued within the Australian community. Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people also deserve recognition because they are the first Aus-tralians and traditional custodians of the land. They deserve proper rec-ognition for their continued contribution to what makes Australia a great nation. National Reconciliation Week runs each year from 27th May to 3rd June. These are very important days in Australia’s history. Today, the of 27th May, marks the anniversary of the 1967 referendum when Australians voted to remove clauses in the Australian Constitution that discriminated against Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people. Yesterday, the 26th May, was National Sorry Day, which was first held in Sydney in 1998 and is now commemorated nationally to remember the Stolen Generations. June 3rd marks the historic 1992 Mabo decision in which the High Court of Australia recognised native title – the recognition that Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples’ rights over their land did survive British colonisation Public Education in NSW is committed to improving the educational out-comes of Aboriginal students and a Key Focus Area of our own Illawarra and South East Region is, “Improved access, participation and outcomes for all Aboriginal students K-12.” I have included in this newsletter five fast facts recognising Indigenous achievement in higher education – something every Australian should be proud to read. Education makes a difference to everyone. Here at Towamba Public School, I am committed to reconnecting our students to the local Aboriginal history in Towamba, and for them to recognise the important contribution Aboriginal Austra-lians have and are making to society. Learning from mistakes, your own or others’, is a Habit of Mind that is promoted here every day, so please take this opportunity to open a conversation about the value of recogni-tion in general and its role in reconciliation specifically. Garden Art Day Expressions of Interest Request Term 3 Week 5

This year in place of the Art & Craft Day, the school is having a Garden Art Day to create artworks to en-hance the garden and the garden projects, including the outdoor classroom project and the kitchen garden project.

We are looking for parents and community members who would like to be involved in running or assisting a group. Everybody and all ideas are welcome.

Some ideas are outdoor sculptures, clay models, apron tie dyeing & sewing, windchimes, scarecrows, felt banners, wood seating and anywhere your imagination takes you! Please contact the school if you’d like to be involved. It is sure to be a fun and creative day.

Return the slip on page 4 if you would like to be involved.
