The town mouse woke up from a dream about a cat prowling around the kitchen. He decided that he

needed to go on a vacation. He wanted to take his wife to the country where he grew up. They packed

a picnic basket and went to the country.

The country mouse and her husband were exhausted looking for food and trying to avoid a hungry owl.

They wished they lived in a town house so they could eat food from a pantry. Suddenly they could smell

cheese and it made their whiskers tingle.

They town mouse thought that country living was the life. Wildflowers, spring peppers, he said only if

we could live here. The country mice came out and asked them if they like it here. The country mouse

and his wife always wanted to live in town. The town mouse offered them some cheese and they tradedhouses. The country mouse and his wife left the country and went to town. Each mouse thought they

It was dark when the country mice and his wife arrived in town. They tiptoed inside and fell asleep in

what they thought was a bed. When they awoke they saw a cloud of smoke over them and they heard

loud voices saying, “Sauces and ham, it’s hungry I am.” The country mouse asked his wife, “Who do you

think it is?”

The country mice were looking forward to a splendid meal from the pantry. The good smell was over

their head. The wife thought it was fine old cheese. She stood on her husband shoulders but could not

reach it, when he tried to stand on his toes, she lost her balance. A top slammed down and she was lefthanging by her tail and she cried for help.

The country mouse felt his wife’s tail and nothing was broken. He saw the sadness in her eyes and he

knew she was discouraged. To cheer her up they climbed up the pantry shelves and looked out the

The town mice stood quietly after the black bird scare. His wife thought she had lost him forever. As

they look around it was quite peaceful. The country was actually beautiful, but his wife missed the

hustle and bustle of town. She felt alone, at least she knew what to expect in their town home.

The country mice knew not to go out in a thunderstorm and they knew what to expect from the hungry

owl. They found that there were different dangers after being caught in the cheese box. She wouldn’t

dare try to take another piece of cheese, so her husband sneaked around and reached for some blue

cheese, only to get slapped and thrown across the room.

when they tried to explore the riverbank. The water boiled and churned and a river otter popped up

and stared at them. The mice ran back to their tree-stump only to find a hedgehog rolled up at the front

door. The animal came toward them and they raced to the nearest tree.

From the tree they could see the lights from the town. The mouse look at his wife to see what she

wanted to do, but before she could say anything she saw a pair of glowing eyes staring her in the face.

She thought it was a cat and they ran as fast as their legs could carry them.

Back on the road the cat and the owl knocked each other out when they collided head-on. The cat

touched his bruises and the owl brushed himself off. The cat said to the owl, how would you like to

trade places with me, I always wanted to try the simple life in the country.
