Every Child. One Voice.
I hope everyone had a wonderful Spring Break and
that your family was able to enjoy some rest and relaxation before
starting the final quarter of the 2018-19 school year. The final nine weeks is packed with
events at Towne Acres. I would like to issue a big thank you to all of you who were able to attend our family engagement event on March 21st. Our annual Art Show and Bingo went very well thanks to the help of our wonderful volunteers and teachers. We were also fortunate to have Dr. Greg Wallace, Supervisor of Mental Health and Safety, join us at the beginning of the event to share about internet safety. Our second graders performed during the yearly “Rejoice in the Arts” event at the Johnson City Mall at the end of the month and represented our school very well.
Kindergarten registration at Towne Acres is scheduled for Wednesday, April 3. If you know of anyone in your neighborhood who has a rising kindergarten student, please share this date with them. It has been posted on social media and our district’s website, but there may be some who have not seen the announcements. Kindergarten
registration is an exciting time for us as we get to meet new students and families who will become members of our Towne Acres family. For those of you with students in 3rd and 4th grade, our school will conduct TN Ready testing during the month of April. The specific dates that we will be testing are April 16, 17, 23, 24, and 25. We also have a couple of makeup dates in the event that students are absent. Testing will take place in the morning on these dates, so it is extremely important that your child is at school on time and ready to do his or her best. As a district, our 2nd-4th grade students participate in quarterly formative assessments called checkpoints that help introduce them to the testing process. If your child shares with you that they are nervous or have anxiety about TN Ready testing, please feel free to email me and let me know. I will be speaking with every 3rd and 4th grade class as we get closer to hopefully help ease their nerves a little bit, but I know many of our students are apprehensive about testing, especially our 3rd graders who will be taking TN Ready for the first time.
We also have several field trips taking place

Ah spring! It’s about time!
My mind has a tendency to fast forward to summer right about now, but I must remind myself that there is still some work to be done before this school year is over. With spring comes new beginnings,
and our PTA is looking for some new faces to join us! This is your PTA, and we want our students and families from all backgrounds to be represented! No matter the amount of time you have available, we can find something that is a good fit for you and your family. Even if you don’t know quite how you’d like to serve, I encourage you to get in touch with myself or someone on our PTA who can help to find an opportunity that you will enjoy.
I want to thank some very special people who helped with the Digital Safety presentation portion of Family Engagement Night: Jen Bradford, Rebecca Jenkins, and Lucy Martin, who helped with sign-in and photo consents; Dr. Greg Wallace and Dr. Simmons who kicked off our event; Mrs. Temm and Jennie Fowler who helped to lead our workshop/small group discussions; Shawn and Jessica Sutterlin and girls, and Felicia Taylor and Brileigh Letcher who helped further with workshops; and our clean-up crew: Felicia Taylor and Brileigh Letcher, Sutterlin family, Fowler family, Weems family, Dr. Simmons, and my husband Cris and kids, Luke, Tess, and Ellie.
April brings with it some work and some play for our kids. Testing will be occurring this month (more info to come from your teacher and Dr. Simmons), as well as field trips for most grades. We’ll celebrate the end of testing with a pep rally and teacher appreciation week. Be on the lookout for more information on end-of-testing activities coming home in your child’s backpack or via email later this month.
Do you or a family you know have an incoming kindergartner? Registration for kindergarten will take place at TA on April 3rd. Please contact Mrs. Powell at 423-854-4800 in our front office to obtain a registration packet and get more information.
Don’t forget about our fundraiser with Ultimate Shine Car Wash! Now through May 31st, thirty percent of all purchases made at any Ultimate Shine location will go to our school. Remember to use Fundraiser
Code 281 at checkout.
Our next PTA general meeting will be Monday, April 8th, and our kindergarten will be performing. We hope you can join us for this special performance! It is a pleasure to serve alongside so many wonderful parent volunteers, teachers, and staff. Let’s finish strong.

a note from the
during the final nine weeks, along with events such as STEM Day (May 3), Field Day (May 10), Reading Awards (May 15), and Senior Tea (May 17). We will not be having the Johnson City Public Library Visit during Reading Awards. In order to streamline the Reading Awards ceremony for those of you who have students in both K-2 and 3-4, we will have those ceremonies back-to-back without the summer library presentation. For any of you who are interested, the Johnson City Public Library will be coming to present on a separate day, and you are welcome to attend to learn more about the offerings there this summer. I hope everyone enjoys the final two months of the school year! Thanks for all you do!
Kind regards,Josh Simmons

Thanks to all who came to Family Engagement Night last week! We had a
great turnout and it seemed as if everyone was enjoying all the activities and refreshments! I know I had
a great time serving Sno-Cones! Thanks to Mrs. Sharp for the fantastic work on the Art Show! The projects were beautiful and
raised great donations for our related arts programs. These events would not be possible without great volunteers. Many thanks to Jenn Hollinger, Anisa Gluzburg, and Amanda Haywood for helping set up the art show. Fowler family and Mrs. Bowman - you all rocked the popcorn and Sno-Cones! Larzo Family, Fowler Family, and Jess Sutterlin - thanks so much for helping clean up! And lastly, thanks again to all families who spent the evening at Towne Acres supporting our school! We love TA!!

April
Towne Acres Kindergarten is excited about sharing some of our adventures in the April issue of the Towne Acres Times. Oh, what a time we are having! We can’t wait for our turn on stage to perform our musical, Folk Songs and Favorites. We can’t wait to entertain the audience with a spectacular performance!
Kindergarten students have actively learned many new things and have made a lot of new friends while preparing for first grade. School is a lot of hard work, but so much fun! We are learning about reading and writing and exploring science and social studies through thematic units and hands on activities. We love reading and listening to fiction and nonfiction stories. Kindergartners are learning how to
become great authors by working on our writing skills daily through meaningful experiences. We are practicing narrative, informational, and opinion writing. We love to count by 1’s, 5’s, and 10’s to 100 and beyond! Each class has worked hard learning to solve addition and subtraction problems. We are practicing being math problem solvers by explaining our thinking. Kindergartners are on their way to becoming excellent mathematicians. Wow, we have grown in our learning!
Students have enjoyed interacting with their 4th grade reading buddies each week. During this time, they read books and practice other basic reading skills. We appreciate the 4th graders’ hard work with the kindergartners!
In October, we visited Stickley Farms. We enjoyed going on a hayride and exploring a corn maze. In March, we traveled to Kingsport to watch the production of The Cat in the Hat. We took this opportunity to discuss story elements. We look forward to our LAST field trip to Hands On! Discovery Center. Students will be engaged in constructing and investigating objects. Many thanks to our parent chaperones for all of their help this year!
We extend a BIG Towne Acres welcome to our new students: Carina Cook, Zachary Crowder, Lily Garber, and Julie Street. We look forward to many more learning adventures and a successful end of the school year!

Isn’t it hard to believe we are in the last stretch of the school year? Thank you to everyone who has donated to Towne Acres Booster Club this year! We have dispersed funds to teachers and each grade level for supplies. Earlier in the year we outfitted a new classroom with a projector and speaker system. The 3rd grade had a request for snap circuits which was granted and the kids loved them! Book Fair (May 7-10) and Walk-a-Thon (May 10) are our next big events. Book Fair will begin Tuesday, May 7th and run throughout that week. Walk-a-Thon kicks off Field Day with a march around Towne Acres with a few special visitors to cheer us on. This is the Booster Club’s biggest fundraiser and sets the tone for how much and what we can provide back to the teachers and school next school year. Donation forms will be coming home in the
weeks to come, and top donations win prizes of Principal for a Day, Librarian for a Day, and Gym Teacher for a Day. The highest class total will also win a pizza party! As always, if you wish to make a donation anytime throughout the year, it is welcome!
Sincerely, Sarah A. SchumaierTA Booster Club President
