began pursuing Total Quality/Continuous Quality

Improvement (TQ/CQI) methods in 1985-86.

Page 4: TQL DCCC Example School

A major initiative to support TQ/CQI efforts in the classroom was the

development of a faculty in-service program to

introduce models reflecting TQ/CQI principles and

practice.

Baugher's LEARN (Locate-Establish-Assess-Research-

Nominate) Model

Page 6: TQL DCCC Example School

and

Page 7: TQL DCCC Example School

Cross and Angelo's classroom assessment

technique generated the most interest.

Page 8: TQL DCCC Example School

The LEARN brings the instructor together with a student quality team to identify opportunities to

improve student learning.

Page 9: TQL DCCC Example School

The model forces systematic data gathering, through the Plan-Do-Check-

Act cycle of continuous improvement;

Page 10: TQL DCCC Example School

and requires that data be collected from the entire

class,

Page 13: TQL DCCC Example School

not just a small segment.

Page 14: TQL DCCC Example School

The student team brainstorms to identify

characteristics that may be interfering with student

learning,

Page 15: TQL DCCC Example School

gathers data,

Page 16: TQL DCCC Example School

plans changes to improve the classroom process,

Page 17: TQL DCCC Example School

and evaluates the changes.

Page 18: TQL DCCC Example School

Faculty were asked to describe how they adapted

LEARN,

Page 19: TQL DCCC Example School

the benefits,

Page 20: TQL DCCC Example School

problems,

Page 21: TQL DCCC Example School

and impacts on the faculty,

and learning outcomes.

Page 24: TQL DCCC Example School

Faculty commented that students realized that they were responsible for their

own learning;

Page 25: TQL DCCC Example School

that it was helpful to see classroom dynamics from the students' perspective;

Page 26: TQL DCCC Example School

that changes seemed trivial to instructors but important

to students;

Page 27: TQL DCCC Example School

and that the project created greater cohesiveness

among students.

Page 28: TQL DCCC Example School

The most common difficulty cited was finding time to

implement LEARN.
