Wanting to share what’s important toyou with friends and family is only natural.Email, texting and posting messages orphotos on Facebook, Twitter, Instagramand other social media make this easy. Butif you’re embroiled in an emotional break-up, be very careful about what you share– your texts and posts could come back tohaunt you.

When going through a separation ordivorce, the rst rule of social media is:“Don’t email, text or post anything youdon’t want a judge to see.”

Once emails, texts and posts are outthere, they can be accessed, copied, sharedfurther and printed. Even a deleted postcan still be retrieved. As well, people youthought of as reliable condantes may passthings on to your ex.

Also, your privacy settings aren’tfoolproof. Tey change all the time andmay have unexpected loopholes. Andinformation you think is private may notbe protected. Courts need to balance yourclaims to privacy with the other side’s rightto put forward relevant information, whichmay trump your privacy claim.

In family law disputes today, much ofthe evidence led in court may consist ofchains of text messages, photos or posts.

Tese can damage or in some cases evendestroy a case. If you say you can’t aff ordto pay child support, then texts or photosof your fancy new car or expensive tropical

     vacation won’t help.

And when it comes to the criticalissues of parenting time and contact with

your children (custody and access indivorce cases), social media posts can dountold harm. Posts sent to your ex out offrustration and anger can come acrossas bullying, threatening or harassinglater. If they amount to psychological oremotional abuse, they may be treatedas family violence under our family law, with serious potential consequences – a

protection order against you, an order toget counselling, maybe even an order toleave the family home. Photos or posts thatshow you partying hard, using drugs orengaging in other risky behaviours can alsohurt your claims for parenting time andcontact with your kids.

Even less dramatic emails, texts or postscan have negative consequences. Tey canshow your character to be diff erent thanwhat you’d like the court to believe. Andit can be devastating for your kids to seenegative posts about your ex.

It’s normal for emotions to run highwhen your family is breaking apart. Butyou should express your hurt and outragein a more private (even professional)setting, not in a public forum which can beseen by everyone, including your ex, theirlawyer and the judge deciding your case.

So when splitting up, take your ex and

their friends and family off   your socialmedia networks. Don’t leave your phonearound unlocked for your ex or others tosnoop through. And don’t put things onsocial media that could anger your spouseand turn things into a bitter court ght.Remember, especially if kids are involved, you’ll want a civil relationship later.

Good Turn Week TurnsInto A National Movement

With our eyes glued to the screens of our phones weofen miss out on the opportunity to connect with others.Te potential for good deeds is all around us – just waitingo be discovered. Local Scouts are challenging the com-

munity to look up from their screens, discover someonen need and perform a Good Turn during the 7th annual

Scouts Canada Good Turn Week from April 22 – May 1.

Initiated in 2009 by Scouts Canada, Good Turn Weeksn’t just for Scouts; it’s a national movement. Let’s bringt to our community. Simply perform a Good Turn  and

encourage the recipient to pay it forward to help spark acycle of goodwill across our community.

Last year from coast to coast, a homeless youth shel-er in Kelowna got a much needed facelif; a student in

Markham, ON gave blood; kids in need in St. John’s, NFeceived healthy school lunches and snacks – these areust a few of the countless acts of kindness that took place.Tis year, Scouts Canada will launch 34 major commu-

nity projects, more than double the number in 2015, madepossible by a generous donation from RBC Foundation.

Simple and easy to perform, Good Turns  can changeomeone’s day. From eff ortless tasks that take seconds, tomall projects, Good Turn opportunities are there for theaking.Tey can help make our community friendlier andtronger, not to mention creating healthier, empowered

youth and adults at the same time. Tat’s right, perform-ng an act of kindness is good for the body and mind.

So to discover your bright side during Good Turn Week, here are some ideas that might get you started down the

    Good Turn Week road:

Tech Wizards: Help organize les or clean up the mem-ory on an older relative’s smartphone or computer.

Outdoorsy Types: Organize a group to pick up litter in apublic park or woodlands.

Friendly Neighbours: Volunteer to do yard work or runan errand, or bake treats and hand them out on your street.

Animal Lovers: Walk someone’s dog, or donate old petoys, beds and accessories to the Humane Society.

Foodies: Make a special meal for your family, or helperve dinner at a homeless shelter.

Workplace Karma: Surprise colleagues with a tasty, homemade snack or lunch.

Reuse and Recycle: Give to a food bank, or donate clothingand blankets to a homeless shelter. For bookworms, donateome of your home library to a school or medical facility.

Surprises: Buy a hot drink for someone who makes a diff er-ence in your life, such as a bus driver, police offi cer or teacher.

Find out more or share your Good Turn by submitting it

via www.Scouts.ca/goodturnweek, or on social media byusing #GoodTurnWeek and tagging @ScoutsCanada

WRITING A CLASSIFIED AD THAT WORKS!

    • Put yourself in the buyer’s shoes. What details would youwant to know about an item you were interested in buying?

    • Include the brand name (manufacturers spend mil-lions promoting the name and enhancing the imageof their products, so take advantage of it). Would yourather buy a refrigerator or a Frigidaire?

    • List the item’s best features and what makes your item

different from others in the same category. (Remem-ber, the more you tell, the clearer picture a potentialbuyer gets, making it easier for you to sell.)

    • Take time to research pricing for your article so thatyou price it reasonably (overpriced items may not re-ceive calls).

    • Include your phone number and the best times to call.• Ask for the sale...one gentleman put “BUY THIS CAR!” in his

ad and was pleasantly surprised by the response to his ad!

The West Kootenay Labour CouncilCelebrates May Day

Precarious employment, discriminatory low wage strat-egies and lack of regard for safety, are themes the labour

movement has organized around and continues to ghtto achieve progress. Historically, workers gathered, ofenllegally, to ght for change; organizing into unions and

forcing governments to change laws and companies tochange practices. Despite some claims that unions are nolonger needed , nothing could be further than the truth.

Child labour that was commonplace in North Americas still prevalent in the global economy. It was swept out

of sight into work ghettos in Asia by international com-panies that prot from lack of enforceable workers’ rightsegislation. Society rarely pays attention to the plight of

workers unless there is a terrible disaster, like work-ers killed in factory res or trapped in mine explosions.Labour has several days of remembrance, to honour thoseworkers who made signicant sacrices to ght for work-ers’ rights. One of the most important is May Day.

Tis year marks the 130 anniversary of the May DayGeneral Strike, May 1, 1886, by workers in the UnitedStates to ght for the eight hour day. Eight hour day withno loss of pay , was the rallying cry for hundreds of thou-sands of American workers who struck, protesting theirexploitation.

On May 4, 1886, during a Chicago demonstration tosupport the eight hour day campaign, police aggression
