has launched, and teams of youth ages 10 - 16 are hard atwork designing, building and programming robots across

the West Kootenay. All teams are preparing for the 2016RoboGames competition to be held on Saturday, Febru-ary 20 from 9 am to 3 pm at Selkirk College’s Mary Hallin Nelson.

RoboGames is a collaborative initiative between theNelson Tech Club and GLOWS, with support from theKootenay Association for Science and Technology andSelkirk College. While in past years the robotics trainingwas held exclusively in Nelson at Selkirk College, this yearNelson Tech Club president, Brad Pommen developed a

series of online training courses, eliminating the needfor teams to travel more than 200 km roundtrip weeklyto attend. Additionally, GLOWS program manager, BethCorven delivered more than 35 Arduino base kits to teamsthroughout the region in the early weeks of December. As a result, RoboGames 2016 is the largest, most diverseevent we have ever attempted to date.

Over 40 teams comprised of 74 youth from across theregion will be competing for the title of RoboGamesChampions.

Teams range from rst time novices to veteran competi-tors. All will have the opportunity to compete in one ormore of the following events: Obstacle Course, Line Fol-lowing Course, Robot Soccer 1 on 1, Special Trick Com-petition, and Robot Battles.

Te goal of GLOWS is to promote science and technol-ogy learning among our young community members bymaking science and technology fun, accessible and non‐intimidating. Ultimately we hope that these youth willincorporate scientic and technical learning into theirfuture education and career choices, enhancing commu-nity vitality and sustainability as our region moves intothe middle of the 21st century. Making technical learningless intimidating is a crucial early step toward encourag-ing the region’s young people to incorporate science andtechnology in their future learning and career plans, thusincreasing the region’s chances of retaining technical tal-ent in the longer term.

Participants will meet at the bottom of Red Chair at 1pm. Te ride up the chair is your date and then you skiback down and meet your next match at the bottom.Tisallows the opportunity to have many mini dates  in oneafernoon. Each participant will be given a sheet where

they can check yes or no to indicate interest in each oftheir dates. If two people check yes for each other, it’s amatch and the event coordinator will give them each oth-er’s contact information.

“Tis is a quirky, fun, no pressure event,” says TaraKowalchuk, Skied Dating coordinator. “It’s totally Ross-land style and gives people an opportunity to meet othersingles who love to ski or board.” Te event has takenplace once before and was fairly successful, there were afew people who met and ended up dating for a while. “Tegreat thing is that you are meeting people who you already

have something in common with,” says Kowalchuk. “It’sa good starting point and keeps the conversation fromgetting awkward because at least you can talk about thesnow!”

We get participants from a range of diff erent ages, so webreak them down into age categories to try to ensure bet-ter matches. However, if you have ridden with everyone inyour age group you are welcome to ride with participantsfrom other groups. We are asking people to preregister ifpossible, as it makes setting up the categories much easier.

You can preregister by contacting Tara at [email protected], or by visiting Guest Services at REDMountain Resort. Tere is also day of registration from12 pm – 1 pm in the RED Resort Conference Center, inthe Base Lodge. It costs $10 to participate, which includesa hot chocolate in the lodge.
