1. Children develop in steps or “stages” (Piaget)2. Adults also develop in stages (Kohlberg, Kegan,

Torbert, Cook-Greuter, Wilber)3. Adults become more mature as they “grow up” and

develop “bigger minds.”4. Stages of development shape how we think and act –

these are our action logics.5. There are (at least) 7 transformations possible in

adulthood.

Development = Horizontal + Vertical

Vertical Development refers toexpanding the ability to think and act in more complex, systemic, and interdependent ways.

It’s about how you think.

Horizontal Development refers to the adding of more knowledge, skills, and competencies.

It’s about what you think.

There are really two types of leadership development: horizontal and vertical.
