JAPAN Airlines has reduced thesize of its spoons in order to helpcut its fuel bill. The London Telegraph this weekreported on a number of cost-saving cutlery related initiativesincluding another move byNorthwest to not include spoonswith its meals unless required. “When you are talking about ajumbo jet with 400 people onboard, being served two to threemeals, this can save a fewkilos,” said IATA environmentaldirector Paul Steele. “You work out how much fuelthat consumes over a year, andyou can be talking about aconsiderable amount of money.”

More sale fares from SQ SINGAPORE Airlines says today’slaunch of a second round of“unprecedented sale fares” willsee it “partner with travel agentsto give consumers a fair go.” The first Take Off to the Worldcampaign launched about 10weeks ago (TD 02 Apr) and SQnational marketing manager, DaleWoodhouse, said it had createdsignificant interest. He said that from today, in acombined effort to stimulate themarket, SQ’s trade partners willpromote the new sale fares to 77destinations, such as a $1388economy class fare to Paris. “As an industry we are

experiencing the challenges of aglobal economic downturn, and attimes like these we feel the bestsolutions will be foundcollaboratively,” he said. The campaign includes lead-infares to Singapore ex Sydney from$705 and London from $1436, andthere are also big reductions onbusiness and first class farelevels, for sales from 12-26 Jun. The Apr SQ fare sale sparked asignificant response from othercarriers who were also forced toslash prices.

Qantas fights back QANTAS has strongly disputedclaims made by unionrepresentatives regarding themaintenance of the aircraftinvolved in Thu’s Jetstar incident. The cockpit fire resulted in thediversion of the flight to Guam(TD yesterday), with the unionsuggesting the fault was due tothe plane being maintained abroad. Qantas group executive, LyellStrambi said the A330-200 aircraftinvolved was delivered new in2007 and had undergone routinechecks in Dec 08 and May 09. Strambi reiterated that whereQantas Engineering does not havethe capacity to do work inAustralia, it does so by reputableoverseas providers and isoverseen by on-site Qantasengineers and that heavymaintenance for A330 planes willbe done in BNE from 2010.
