Tahmina, is not in school yet. Instead of going to school, she roams around her house and watches random people walking on the busy roads. Learning from life, watching every little detail of her surroundings, she whispers “What if I could read people’s mind? What if I could climb the rope that holds the stars up high in the sky?” MH Kawsar rudro

• Eid-Ul-Azha is an Islamic festival to award Ibrahim’s (AS) willingness to follow Allah’s command Ibrahim’s (AS) to sacrifice his only son, Ismail (AS). But when was he was about to sacrifice Ismail (AS), Allah saved the boy’s life and replaced him with a lamb. And this is what Ibrahim (AS) sacrificed.

• Eid-Ul-Azha is a two to four day celebration, depending on different countries.

• Two-thirds of the meat from the sacrifice is given away to the friends and the poor. The act shows our wish to give up things that are of benefit to us in order to follow Allah’s commands. The idea is that no poor person is left without meat on their table during Eid al-Azha.

• The sacrificed animal has to meet a

certain set of rules, which include being of a certain age and of the highest quality available.

• Muslims celebrate the occasion by giving away gifts, wearing new clothes, and visiting family and friends. Older family members usually give children money on Eid-Ul-Azha.

• During this period, many Muslims travel to Makkah for the Hajj. The Eid begins the day after Muslims on the Hajj come down from Mount Arafat. Every year, approximately three million Muslims travel to Saudi Arabia for the Hajj.

• On the first morning of Eid-Ul-Azha, Muslims around the world attend morning prayers at their local mosques.

• Abraham is claimed to be the father of three religions – Islam, Christianity and Judaism.

• Abraham was born under the name Abram in the city of Ur in Babylonia.

• According to Islam, Ishmael was Abraham’s first son and together they built the Ka’aba, Islam’s most holy shrine, in Makkha. Muslims believe that the worship of the one God, Allah, is a restoration of the

faith in one God that Ibrahim (AS)began many years ago.

• Muslim holy texts include the story of Ibrahim (AS) smashing his father’s idols. Islam holds that Ibrahim worshiped only one god, Allah.

• According to Jewish tradition, Abraham died at the age of 175 and was buried by Isaac and Ishmael in a cave of Machpelah.

• The most popular story describing Ganesha was when Parvati created him as a protector of her privacy.

• Angered by her husband, refusing to respect her privacy, Parvati decided to take matters into her own hands. Parvati created a body of a boy out of sandlewood, put life into him and told him he was her son and should guard the entrance while she bathed.

• Hence, when Shiva came to see Parvati, Ganesha refused to let him in. Shiva, unaware that Ganesha was his son, cut his head off in anger. Parvati, returning from her bath, saw her headless son. She became extremely angry and

• Durga puja is an important Hindu festival celebrated all over Bangladesh.

• The oldest Durga puja ceremony took place in 1610 due to the efforts of the royal family of Barisha.

• The puja consists of 10 days. On the first day of the 10-day festival, it is assumed that Durga Maa starts her journey to earth from heaven.

• The final day is the 10th day when the Goddess goes back to heaven. On this day married women cover Durga Maa and other married women with “sindoor” on the note

of saying goodbye. It means happy farewell and a wish of happiness.

• Durga Puja includes the worship of Goddess Durga along with Lord Shiva and her four sons.

• Goddess Durga is the symbol of woman’s strength, reflecting Durga maa’s victory over the demon.

• People dance in front of the idol to the music of dhol.

• On the 10th day when the festival comes to an end, it also spreads the message that “good wins over evil.” Durga Puja is full of fun but also contains a strong moral lesson.

threatened to destroy the heavens and the earth.

• Shiva tried to calm her down and instructed his followers to bring the head of the first living being they see. The first creature they met was an elephant and they cut its head off and placed it on Ganesha which brought him back to life.

• Ganesha is usually seen as an idol with the body of a man and the head of an elephant, having only one tusk. He has a large belly. On his chest is his sacred thread in the form of a snake. The vehicle of Ganesha is a mouse.

• Kali is one of the most well known and worshipped Hindu Goddesses.

• In Hindu myth, Kali came out from the wrinkly brow of Durga when she could not defeat the demon Raktabija. Every time Durga hit the demon, drops of blood would fall on the ground and form another demon. When Durga was getting frustrated, Kali took care of the demon. She took out her tongue

and caught all the drops of blood, then ate the demon right up.

• Kali’s hair is untidy and indicates Kali’s endless freedom. Kali has three eyes; the third one stands for wisdom.

• Kali has several arms. The position of her right arms means fearlessness while her left arms hold a bloody sword and a human head. Looking at Kali’s right, we see

good, and looking at her left, we see bad.

• Kali is naked except for a belt made of cut off limbs and a garland of 50 skulls. The arms represent the capacity for work. The 50 skulls represent the 50 letters of the Hindu alphabet. Kali is the bright fire of truth, which cannot be hidden by the clothes of ignorance.

Washing handsThink about the germs in your hands waiting to get straight into your stomach and ruin the rest of your Eid. Thus 20 seconds of hand washing activity, soap included, before and after each meal, can save you the trouble of staying in bed for Eid.

Freshening upShowers take more time than just washing hands but give more benefits too. Think of the time when your friends smell fresh with great hairdos

Wardrobe turnoverNow you don’t want to look the same on each of the three days of Eid, do you? It’s good practice to change clothes regularly to avoid constant contact of germs building in your clothes.

Using those hankiesFevers and colds are easy to catch this time of the year. When you have a runny nose, or see someone else with a bad cold, sneezing or coughing, put a handkerchief onto your nose or

stuff some tissues into your pockets. Nasal discharge can infect others so it’s important to wipe your nose whenever necessary.

Easy on the fattyMoms give out their hearts and souls when cooking Eid meals. But eating too much red meat can pile up fats in our body and cause an upset stomach.

Flushing the toiletAfter the big meaty feast, it’s time to run to the toilet. When you flush the

toilet, germs could fly outside and pollute your toothbrush, toothpaste or other items. Hence make it a habit to cover the toilet with the cover before flushing.

Brushing your teethThe big meals of the day leave things stuck in between the teeth. Hence cleaning your teeth and flossing it after every meal is a must Also, brushing twice a day is a must with night time brushing being important.

thE gErm farmit’s almost time for Eid-ul-azha, the feast of the sacrifice. The words “Eid Mubarak” bring laughter and joy but in the middle of all the festival we seem to forget all about hygiene. Children are never keen on learning good clean habits but hygiene is the best weapon you can have against the bad germs which come in the way of your fun experience NusraT NausHiN
