profiLe on Sierra Leone Sierre Leone is best known for their big diamond mines and cocoa trees that give us chocolates. It is on the Atlantic Coast of West Africa with coastal wetlands rising to mountains called the “lion mountains.” The name was given by a 15th century Portuguese explorer, Pedro de Sintra in the year 1462 after he was surprised by the beauty of the wonderful mountains. Sierra Leone was a British settlement from the 1800s until 1961. Sir Milton Margai was the country’s first prime minister after the country received it’s independence from Great Britain.

The capital of Sierra Leone is Freetown and the population of the country is 5,525,000. It is called so because of the country’s history about freedom and erasing slavery. The languages spoken in Sierra Leone are English, Krio, Mende and Temne. There are mainly Muslims in Sierra Leone along with a few Christians and a lot of other people from different religions. The currency that is used in Sierra Leone is called leone. Pragya rahman

Operation is a fun and interesting game to play when you’re bored and even when you’re not bored. It has pieces that you have to match according to the pictures of Sam’s body. Once you’re done with that, get your tweezers out and get ready to pick out the pieces from Sam’s body. If you move your tweezers an inch too far, the whole board starts to vibrate and Sam’s nose goes red and you lose. It is a great game for the entire family to play. You can play in turns and keep scores. Sam’s a great friend to spend an evening with but here’s a word of warning: don’t feed him your vegetables!

fiLLeD witH rageMaleficent is a fairy with wings who lives in the Moors- a magical forest. When she is young, she meets a boy named Stefan who is also the father of the girl whom she befriends later on in her life as an adult named Aurora. As Stefan and Maleficent grow older, she becomes the protector of the realms. During this time, King Henry the ruler of the neighbouring land plans on conquering the Moors but does not succeed as Maleficent drives him and his army away. The king later on declares that whoever kills Maleficent will have his daughter’s hand in marriage and will be the next

in line for the throne. Stefan, being determined goes to meet Maleficent but cannot kill her as they were once friends. Instead he drugs her and cut her wings off with a sharp iron tool, leaving Maleficent wingless. Stefan goes onto marry the king’s daughter eventually becoming king.

After the birth of Stefan’s daughter Maleficent curses her with the curse of eternal sleep on her 16th birthday mentioning that she will: ‘prick her finger on the spindle of a spinning wheel’. There is however an antidote: true love’s kiss. Maleficent begins to watch over young Aurora

as she grows up and they soon meet and become friends. Aurora soon befriends Prince Phillip whom she grows fond of. Aurora also learns of her true identity and this forces her to love her roots and rush to the castle whereupon she pricks her finger on a spinning wheel and

falls to a sleep like death. Maleficent takes Phillip to the castle so that he can kiss her and bring her back, but it is revealed that Maleficent’s motherly love and her kiss on the forehead break’s the curse. It was after all, something of true love.

In Sierra Leon the main food that people love to eat is rice. There is a popular saying that goes something like this: “If I haven’t had my rice. I haven’t eaten today.” So the eating habit in Sierra Leone, as you can see, is quite similar to Bangladesh. Popular dishes are stews made of fish or meat. The sauces for the stews are made with cassava leaves or potato leaves. Other basic things used in making the sauce are tomatoes, onions, red peppers, yams, and palm oil. People in Sierra Leone also love their seafood such as oysters and lobster.

Fruits such as pineapple, banana,

watermelon mangoes, papaya, avocados, guava and oranges are often eaten as snacks. Vegetables are often cut and fried as chips, and served as a snack, much like the potato chip. Pragya rahman

The men in Sierra Leone often wear traditional pull-on pants with a matching tunic (a long shirt) with machine embroidery. In formal places, they may wear a large matching gown like a coat over the top and a small “pill box” hat. Women often wear a “lapa” or skirt, made from a large piece of material wrapped around the waist. Blouse styles may be fitting tops or larger, loose tunics or gowns. Women mostly have a matching headband to wrap around the head. These are the traditional clothes that are commonly worn. However, western wear is also popular for those who have access to it. It is not uncommon to see people in Sierra Leone wearing the same styles as you might see in Europe or the United States., such as t-shirts, shirts, jeans and formal trousers, shorts etc. Pragya rahman

The Aztecs were the last local American rulers of Mexico. Tenochtitlan was an Aztec altepetl (city-state) located in an island in Lake Texcoco, in the Valley of Mexico. It was founded in 1325 and became the capital of Aztec Empire in the 15th century.

Tenochtitlan was a “floating city,” built in Lake Texcoco, on one natural and many man-made islands. It covered about eight to 13.5 square km. Raised roads connected the city to the mainland, with bridges that allowed canoes and other traffic to pass freely. If the city came under attack, the bridges could be pulled away in order to protect it. All sections of the city could be visited either on foot or by canoe because of a series of canals.

The palace of Moctezuma II also had two zoos. One section had birds of prey and another had regular birds, reptiles and

mammals. About 300 people were taking care of the animals. There was also a botanical garden and an aquarium. The aquarium had ten ponds of salt water and ten ponds of fresh water, with fish and aquatic birds.

Aztecs believed that the world would come to an end unless they sacrificed people and offered their hearts to their sun god, Huitzilopochtli. They built pyramids and temples where they sacrificed prisoners from the cities they had won over. Aztec priests used knives with stone blades to kill up to 1000 people each week.

Cloth, maize, pottery and luxury goods were brought to Tenochtitlan from the these cities by workers and traded in four huge markets. Officials made a list of all the things used in picture writing. The Aztecs called for war on any tribe that refused to pay them. ehSan Sunny
