MECOSTA COUNTY Much toom and Connie Grants delight, close to 1,000 pumpkins grew ontheir one-acre pumpkin this year
about double what the Rodneyfarm yielded during the fall of2009.Tom Grant attributes last fallslow yield to the cooler-than-average weather, which slowedbee pollination of the plants. The temperatures also made thepumpkins that did develop, do soslowly.
This year, however, it wascompletely different story for thegourds. The rain was consistent,as was the warm weather, whichnever became too hot.Last year was such a badyear, Grant said. This year wasperfect for everything. The everthing Grant referred toincludes other Mecosta Countycash crops, such as hay andcorn. It seems to be two ends of
the spectrum weve seen intwo years, Jerry Lindquist,a Michigan State UniversityExtension agricultural educator inOsceola County. In my 28-yearcareer, this has probably beenthe greatest growing seasonfrom a crop-yield standpoint thatI have ever seen. ... These plantsdidnt lack for anything. They justgrew big fruits and big kernels ofcorn.
BED BUGS: UNWELCOMEHITCHHIKERS
(NewsUSA) - Your bed mightseem like a respite after timespent away from home -- untilyou wake up covered in red, itchy bites. Unfortunately, thisscenario is becoming morecommon; bed bugs are onthe rise, and many travelersbring them home as unwantedsouvenirs.
Bed bugs are insects that feedon human blood. Dark browncreatures the size of appleseeds, bed bugs bite sleepinghumans -- they even injectanesthetics to keep people fromwaking. Although their bitesitch and can produce allergicreactions in some people, bedbugs are not known to transmitdisease.
In the 1990s, few Americanshad ever seen bed bugs, butthe ectoparasites have come
back in a big way. In a survey ofpest management professionalsconducted by the NationalPest Management Association
(NPMA) and the University ofKentucky, 95 percent of U.S.respondents said that theircompany encountered a bed buginfestation in the past year. Only25 percent of them could say thesame thing in 1999.
Bed bugs are accomplishedhitchhikers. They travel insuitcases and furniture, or byattaching themselves to clothes.Bed bugs can be found in any
place where humans gather ingroups, including movie theaters, churches and libraries, as well asplaces that see many travelers, like hotels.
A visual inspection is thebest way to detect bug bugs.Check beds and furniture whenchecking into hotels, and inspectyour suitcase before bringing itinto your house. If you suspectthat you have bed bugs at home,
call a professional, as bed bugsare the most difficult pest to treat.
Want to learn more about bedbugs? Visit the NPMAs Bed BugHub at PestWorld.org/bedbugsfor fact sheets, FAQs, news andmore resources.
For more information or to finda local pest professional, visitwww.PestWorld.org.
SAVE MONEY, HELP THEENVIRONMENT WITH
PROPERLY INFLATED TIRES
(NewsUSA) - Tire pressuremonitoring systems (TPMS) arenow a standard safety feature onall new cars in the United States.TPMS automatically monitors tirepressure and alerts the driverwhen the pressure in one ormore tires becomes significantlylow -- and potentially dangerous.
Still, conducting monthly tirepressure checks is one of thesmartest driving moves you canmake. Not only are properlyinflated tires critical for vehiclesafety, they also increase fuelefficiency and reduce carbondioxide emissions.
Increase Fuel Efficiency
According to the U.S.
Department of Energy, 3.56million gallons of gasolineare wasted every day due to
incorrectly inflated tires. Thegood news is you can improvegas mileage just by keeping tiresinflated to the proper pressure.
In fact, one study showed that ifgas costs $3 per gallon, propertire pressure can save you up to$432 at the pump each year.
Reduce Carbon DioxideEmissions
According to the U.S.Environmental ProtectionAgency, the typical car in theUnited States releases morethan five tons of carbon dioxide
into the atmosphere each year.By keeping tires properly inflated, you can reduce your vehiclescarbon footprint by an averageof 327 pounds per year. Becausea tire can lose up to half its airpressure without appearing tobe under-inflated, you cannotrely on a tires appearance todetermine whether its properlyinflated or not.
Tire Pressure Tips From
Schrader
To help ensure your tires areproperly inflated year-round,here are some tips fromSchrader, the inventor andleading manufacturer of TPMSworldwide:
* Check the pressure in allfour tires -- and the spare tire-- monthly with an accurate tiregauge, and always check tirepressure before a long road trip.
* The right pressure for yourvehicles tires can be found inthe vehicles manual or on thedriver door edge, glove boxor fuel door. Do not follow theinformation listed on the tiresidewall.
* For the most accurate reading, tires should be checked whenthey are cool.
* Always remember to replacethe valve cap.
For more tips, including whatto do if the TPMS symbolilluminates on your dashboard, visit TPMSMadeSimple.com.Schrader created the site to helpeducate drivers about TPMSand the importance of proper tirepressure.
INCLUDE RECOVERY TIME IN
YOUR EXERCISE PLAN
(NewsUSA) - When you thinkabout getting in shape, youmight flash back to 80s moviemontages of jogging up stairs,
hitting punching bags andpracticing martial arts moves. Butif the movies had it right, theydalso show the hero kicking backwith a glass of chocolate milk-- when it comes to getting inshape or improving performance, recovery time is just as importantas working out. Exercise createsmicro-tears in muscle fibers. The body repairs those muscles, making them stronger thanthey were before the workout.
But muscle repair takes time.If you exercise before yourmuscles recover, you increasethe damage. Over a period oftime, youll actually sabotageyour performance by repeatedlybreaking down muscle withoutgiving it a chance to rebuild.
The faster your body can recoverafter exercise, the stronger youllget, because youll be able toexercise at a higher level more
frequently. Here are some tips foimproving muscle recovery forbetter performance:
* Fuel your muscles. Musclerecovery starts right after aworkout, so you should giveyour body the nutrients itneeds to rebuild muscle assoon as possible. Drink waterand electrolytes immediatelyafter exercise. Exercise usesup muscles glycogen energystores, so replenish them withsimple carbohydrates. Make sureto eat protein within two hoursafter working out. In one study, those who drank chocolate milkafter exercise recovered morequickly than those who drank asports beverage, probably dueto milks balance of minerals, carbohydrates and protein.
* Increase circulation. The moreblood going to your
legs, the better. Stretching
and massage can help yourmuscles release toxins. You mayalso want to try a pain-relievingliquid, such as Absorbine, Jr.(www.absorbinejr.com). Thenatural herbal formula providestemporary relief from muscleaches by improving circulationand reducing pain, so you canspeed up your recovery time andget back to your sport.
* Rest. Getting a full eight hoursof sleep will help your body

recover. On a similar note, give your body time to rebuildbetween workouts. Most athletesinclude one or two recoverydays in their training programs,

DO GREEN PRODUCTS
WORK? ARE THEY COST-
EFFECTIVE?
(NewsUSA) - Todays consumersappreciate businesses with asense of social responsibility, butbeing a good global citizen whilemaintaining a positive customerenvironment and keeping costsdown can be a challenge. Some
businesses are rising to thechallenge by starting recyclingprograms and installing energy-efficient light bulbs, but thinkthat further initiatives will betoo complicated to implement.A green cleaning program, can, however, meet any businesscriteria for performance and cost.
Performance
If a product doesnt work, itdoesnt matter that it is earth-
friendly or affordable. Companiescan go to their distributors, whowill usually provide sampleproducts. Companies canthen test the products in as
many scenarios as possible.Tests should take weather intoconsideration. For example, businesses located in regionsthat experience heavy rain orsnow all winter may not choosethe best product if they test indry, summery conditions.
Most product lines include highlyeffective products as well asothers that dont work as well.Since its pragmatic to order allproducts from a single brand, businesses should match theirmost important cleaning needs tothe best products in the line. Forexample, a jewelry retailer musthave crystal-clear display casesto showcase their products, sopriority should be given to aline with a highly effective glasscleaner.
Green
Evaluating the green claimsof cleaning products canalso be difficult. Several
national organizations certifyproducts as green, howevereach uses different criteriaand specifications, basedon proprietary definitions
and internal reviews. Onedesignation, DfE (Design for theEnvironment), is approved bythe US Environmental ProtectionAgency (EPA). DfE-certifiedproducts must meet rigorousstandards for biodegradabilityand toxicity, health hazards, storage and shipping limitations, flammability, etc.
Companies also need toconsider how products arepackaged. Pre-measuredpackaging, for example, cancontribute to a green initiative,as it creates less waste.Shipping and storage savingscan be significant also. Productsmanufactured by Pak-It, LLC,a subsidiary of JBI, Inc (OTC-QX: JBII - News), come inwater-soluble packets. Becausetheyre just packets of cleaningconcentrate and arent mixedwith water, there is less weight toship and space-saving storage.
Cost-Effective
The cost of cleaning productsshould be evaluated on a totalcost of ownership basis sinceso many factors contribute to
the overall goal of a clean retailenvironment. Businesses canmake an estimate by choosingone location and determininghow much money it would costto keep it clean for one year witheach product in consideration, including storage costs, laborand supplies.
One size does not fit all whenit comes to cleaning, especiallyfor multi-location retailers.Consideration should be givento seasonal changes in cleaningneeds as well as those basedon general geographic location.National multi-location retailerscan generalize by classifyingstores in zones and consideringthe unique needs of each zone tensure that the cleaning programis effective. By calculating thecost on an annual basis, anyseasonal impacts will be takeninto consideration.
