HEALTH CARE QUALITY: WHY

IT’S IMPROVING, HOW TO

GET IT

(NewsUSA) - The ongoingdebate about health care reformobscures an important fact: Americans get better care todaythan they did 20 years ago.

A key reason is the NationalCommittee for Quality Assurance

(NCQA). The nonprofitorganization was foundedin 1990 to measure qualityand make health care moretransparent and accountable.Dr. Elliott Fisher, Director of Population Health and Policy atthe Dartmouth Institute, creditsNCQA for reporting quality thesame way across the countryso people can make “apples-to-apples comparison” whenchoosing health plans.

By making care more transparentand accountable, NCQA hassaved thousands of lives andmillions of dollars. It does thisby helping people get care theyneed and preventing waste.Children today are nearly threetimes more likely to get their recommended immunizationsthan they were in 1997, thanks inlarge part to NCQA.

The Healthcare EffectivenessData and Information Set(HEDIS) is NCQA’s main tool for improving health care. HEDISshows how often insurers providescientifically recommendedtests and treatments to supportmore than 70 aspects of health.One-hundred twenty million Americans -- about two in five-- receive care from health plansheld accountable by regular reporting of HEDIS results.NCQA translates the results for consumers to use online at http://

reportcard.ncqa.org/.

NCQA also helps doctors’

offices serve patients better by becoming “patient-centeredmedical homes.” A “medicalhome” is not a place, but a way

of organizing care. It combinesteamwork and technology totransform the doctor-patientrelationship from a series of hurried visits into a long-termpartnership committed to keepingpeople healthy.

Medical homes coordinate allpatient care, and make it easier for patients to get care by stayingopen later and keeping in touchbetween appointments by phoneor e-mail.

The result: more satisfied, healthier patients with fewer hospital and emergency roomvisits.

Are you tired of being “patient”with doctors offices that expectyou to work around their schedules? Find a new one whohas earned NCQA Recognitionas a patient-centered medicalhome.

PEST-PROOF YOUR HOME

AGAINST SUMMERTIME

CRITTERS

(NewsUSA) - In the heat of summer, unwanted pests aremaking their way into cooler homes, and they are more than just a nuisance. Pests pose risksto people’s health and property,so it is important for homeownersto take steps to prevent

infestations. There are manyways in which homeowners can“pest-proof” their homes as partof their summer-maintenanceroutine. Taking preventivemeasures early in the seasonis the best approach to keepingpests at bay.

“As the warmer weather bringsback numerous pests, earlysummer is the perfect time for homeowners to thoroughlyinspect their homes as part of

seasonal maintenance,” saysMissy Henriksen, vice presidentof public affairs for the NationalPest Management Association(NPMA).

Various insects such as ants, flies, termites and cockroachesare frequent summer homeintruders, as are those of the stinging variety such asmosquitoes, wasps, bees andyellowjackets.

The NPMA recommends anumber of methods to keep

household pests outside, wherethey belong.

* Seal cracks and smallopenings in the home’sfoundation, around windows anddoors.

* Repair ripped window screens.

* Cut tree branches and plantsso that they do not reach tooclose to the house.

* Eliminate sources of moistureor standing water, including birdbaths and in clogged gutters.

* Inspect the outside of a homefor nests built by stinging insects-- typically found in the eavesunder roofs.

* Keep kitchen counters clean, and store food like sugarycereals in sealed containers.

* Empty garbage containersfrequently and seal indoor containers.

* Make sure pets’ food anddishes are not left out for longperiods of time.

ith the difficult economy, college is slipping beyond reachof many families. However, bygiving a College Illinois! Prepaid

Tuition Program contract to achild or grandchild, you lock ina price for their future educationtoday, staying a step ahead of tuition inflation.

“The price of college for onechild is steep, and we havefive to worry about,” said CindyWisniewski of Naperville, Ill., aCollege Illinois! Prepaid TuitionProgram contract holder.

“College Illinois! lets us save for

college for our kids over time in away that makes sense financiallyfor us.”

Wisniewski said the flexiblebenefits and array of paymentoptions attracted her to theprogram.

“Each of our children can chooseto attend just about any schoolthey want,” she said. “We lovebeing able to give them thisunique opportunity to build their future.”

college education is a gift thatill never go out of style, and the

holiday season lets purchaserstake advantage of tax benefitsbefore year-end.

To give a prepaid tuition contractto a child, Andrew Davis, executive director of the IllinoisStudent Assistance Commission, the agency that administers theCollege Illinois! Prepaid TuitionProgram, suggests combining itwith another gift such as a piggybank to help a child gain a better understanding of money.

“A children’s book such as‘The Penny Pot’ would bean appropriate gift for young

readers,” said Davis, a contractholder himself. “For older children, ‘Money Sense for Kids’might be a good choice.”

HAVE A HEART: PREVENT

HEARTWORM

(NewsUSA) - Your pet offersunconditional love, so shouldn’tyou do your best to take care of his or her heart?

Cats and dogs can becomeinfected with heartworm frommosquito bites. All cats and dogs

are susceptible to heartworm,no matter their age or state of health. It is important to protectyour pet regardless of where youlive as heartworm disease hasbeen found in every state.

When an infected mosquito bitesa pet, it transmits heartwormlarvae, which mature into longadult heartworms that can livein the heart and surroundingvessels for several years. The number of heartworms

living within the heart canbe astounding; up to 250heartworms have been foundin a single dog. Pets treatedfor heartworm don’t developimmunity and can be reinfectedat any time by another mosquitobite, so prevention after treatment is essential.

While many pets don’t displaysymptoms in the early stages, adog with heartworm disease canshow signs including: coughing, fainting, weight loss or difficultybreathing. If left undetectedand untreated, heartwormdisease can cause sudden

death by blocking blood flow tothe heart. In dogs, heartwormtreatment involves slowly killingthe worms without harming the

pet. Cats tend to have fewer worms, but their effect can be just as devastating. Currently, noheartworm treatment exists for cats.

Luckily, heartworm diseaseis completely and easilypreventable. Administeringan oral monthly heartwormpreventative, or having your veterinarian give an injectionevery six months, will killimmature heartworms before

they mature and are able to inflictdamage to the pet.

The experts at Banfield PetHospital (www.banfield.com)suggest pet owners get their petstested for heartworms and thendiscuss prevention or treatmentif necessary. The test is quickand simple and requires only adrop of your pet’s blood. Onlya veterinarian can prescribeheartworm preventive, and he or she will make sure your pet getsthe appropriate protection.

For more information, visit www.banfield.com.

AM? FM? HD? Satellite? CD? MP3?

Your customers have lots of choices when deciding

what to listen to. When you need to reach those

customers you could choose radio. But should you

choose AM, FM, HD, or Satellite? en which formatshould you choose: Adult Contemporary, Smooth

Jazz, Rock, Hip Hop, Country, Classical, News, Talk,

Urban, Oldies, Latin, Religious, or Sports? Once

you’ve chosen the medium and the format you’ll

need to select the right stations. How many stations

do you listen to? Do your customers listen to the

same ones? Do you need a 30 or 60 second spot?

Finally, which daypart should you advertise on:

morning drive, mid-day, afternoon drive, evening, or

overnight?

If this all seems a bit complicated there is an

alternative. Your free community paper reaches themost households in our area and oers two simple

options: size and color. You choose the size and color

options that work for your budget. It’s that simple.

Call us today to discuss those two options with a

professional advertising consultant. We’ll handle

everything. en you can sit back and listen to your

iPod without any distractions.
