    AMERICA GETS READY TO

    CELEBRATE ENGINEERING

(NewsUSA) - February 19-25, 2012, isEngineers Week, or EWeek, a celebrationof the engineering profession and a focalpoint for public awareness programsshowcasing engineering and technology.

This national event is held each yearduring the week of President GeorgeWashingtons Birthday; many considerGeorge Washington to be the nationsfirst engineer.

Schools, corporations, museums, government and media groups andtechnical organizations across thecountry will join together in the outreacheffort, sponsoring various programs andactivities to spotlight engineering andpromote careers in the field.

A focus of EWeek 2012 will bescience, technology, engineering andmath education awareness, betterknown as STEM education, and many

organizations will carry out programs that

aim to create visibility for the professionin the precollege education sector. Forinstance, ASME (the American Societyof Mechanical Engineers) will conductthe Inspire Innovation workshop, whichwill bring together engineers and K-12

teachers for a daylong program of fun, enrichment and knowledge-sharing.

A thrust of the workshop is to motivateK-12 students to consider careers inthe engineering profession, and alsoto inspire K-12 teachers to incorporateengineering into lesson plans as well aslearn about tools and resources that caninfluence effective classroom instruction, said Victoria A. Rockwell, the president ofASME.

In another Engineers Week 2012program, ASME is launching theDiscoverE Educator RecognitionAwards to teachers in grades 6-12 whodemonstrate success in inspiring students

to discover engineering. The awards willbe presented in Washington, D.C., site ofother EWeek events, including the FutureCity competition.

While the nations capital will hostseveral Engineers Week 2012 activities, towns and communities everywhere areencouraged to join in the celebration.Other staples of Engineers Week includeIntroduce a Girl to Engineering Day andthe announcement of the New Faces ofEngineering, which features rising starsof the profession.

Experts believe that the United Statesis facing a shortage of scientific andengineering talent and skills required to

develop next-generation technologiesenabling the U.S. to compete in the

global market. Engineers Week goes along way toward solving this problem, while also celebrating the many ways thatengineers and engineering contribute tothe betterment of our quality of life acrossthe world. For information, visit www.

    REFRESHING COMMUNITIES

    THROUGH OUTDOOR

    GARDENS

(NewsUSA) - Whether you live in anurban or rural area, enjoying the outdoorsis something many Americans have incommon, and we experience it in differentways -- both big and small -- from growingherbs on the back porch to perusing thecommunity farmers market in town.

But why not take it a step further andtake action to make your community alittle greener? Creating an outdoor oasishelps preserve green space, beautifiesneighborhoods, and can also bringtogether the community through a sharedcause.

One way to do this is through ThePepsi Refresh Project, which throughthe input of people across the country, awards grants to projects, for bothindividuals and organizations, that dogood for the community. This monthPepsi is challenging America, askingHow can you upgrade your hometownwith a new community garden? Go towww.refresheverything.com and givePepsi your best answer, or click throughthe hundreds of other entries to vote onyour favorite ideas to help ensure worthy

    organizations receive the funding they

deserve. Since last year, Americans havchosen to award more than 20 milliondollars to community-supportive ideasthat receive the greatest number of votesthrough this landmark fundraising effort.

    Take Central Elementary Gardens

for example, started by teacher ChristyCuthbert, who used the $25,000 PepsiRefresh Project grant to create an outdoolearning center and garden for her school.Students not only get their hands dirty inthe garden, but also learn skills to promotand manage a community farmers market.Theres also the Brigits Bounty started bya Colorado resident, Brandi-Lynn Greig. She used her $25,000 grant to providfencing, seeds, trees, and educationalprogramming for a community garden, which provides fresh vegetables to ove200 families in need each month.

Other ways to get involved are to joinan already established community garden

or farm in your area. From planting tmanaging sales, there are several waysyou can contribute.

Every action helps to create majoimpact on communities, whether youchoose to vote for your favorite ideor put your own idea into action. Evenas the summer days start to shortenand we head back to school, Pepsi willcontinue to challenge Americans withthe next question, asking, How wouldyou make learning fun? No matter thseason, ideas can always inspire changein communities and the Pepsi RefreshProject encourages just that.

    Student Led Conferences at BRMS

Captured in the moment is a parent experiencing student led conferencesfor the first time at the Big Rapids Middle School. Daegan, a sixth graderexplains in detail to his mom all the great things Mr. Hooker does inScience class. In the past parents waited in line to speak to each teacherand sometimes they had to wait a very long time. The student ledconferences helps students and parents gain an understanding of howeach class works and what work they have completed. Lenore Weaver, the building principal was instrumental in gaining an understanding of howthis format could work at the middle school and implemented it thisyear. The feedback so far has been great. A big thank you to all theparents and staff for making it such a success.

    ALWAYS THE BRIDESMAID?

    OU CAN WEAR THE

DRESSES AGAIN(NewsUSA) - And youll be able to

wear it again! is a phrase often used

    around bridesmaids dresses. Because a

    ridiculously expensive lime-green taffeta

    shepherdess gown is appropriate for

almost any occasion, and the Peter Pan

ollar is poised to make a comeback any

    entury now.

If youre one of the many women who

as piles of Pepto-Bismol-colored rufflestuffed in the back of her closet, never

fear -; you will be able to wear that dress

gain. Host an old bridesmaids dress

arty, and the good times may even blot

ut the embarrassment of having had to

ear that dress in the first place.

Where to start? The concept is simple

    - invite all of your girlfriends over, and

ell them to wear their most hideous

ridesmaid dress. Not only will you get

o rewear the bridesmaids dresses of

eddings past, youll also get to laugh at

some of the more hideous outfits. Note:

if you were a bridesmaid at a friends

edding, either dont invite her or try noto wear the dress she chose, even if it

does include a tutu and puffed sleeves.

Adding an inexpensive spin to classic

elegance is the way to go. Skip the

chips and dip in favor of a fruit-and-

cheese platter. For a refreshing twist

    on champagne, the traditional wedding

libation, pick up a few bottles of a fruit-

    flavored sparkling wine. Arbor Mist

(arbormist.com), which is known for fruit

    and wine combinations like Strawberry

    White Zinfandel and Blackberry Merlot,

has recently released a line of sparkling

wines. Both the Peach Sparkle and the

    Raspberry Sparkle combine light and

crisp sparkling wine with natural fruit,

creating the perfect refreshment for a get-

    together with your girlfriends.

For entertainment, ask each woman to

tell the story behind her bridesmaid dress.

You can also have fun playing a wedding-

themed round of Pictionary or charades.

You can also hold a vote to find out, foronce and for all, which one of you had to

endure the wearing the worst bridesmaid

    dress.

    wines, visit www.arbormist.com.

    DONT TREAD LIGHTLY ON

WINTER TIRE SAFETY(NewsUSA) - With winter upon us, tire

safety in cold weather is something every

car owner should be familiar with. Most

drivers concentrate on tire safety in hot

weather to avoid blowouts, but the same

precautions should be exercised in the

winter. One of the most effective ways to

be safe on the road is to use a winter tire

    specially designed for cold weather.

    Common all-season tires contain a

    tread compound that gradually hardens

when temperatures dip below 45 degrees,

resulting in a decrease in traction. These

tires also tend to collect winter road debris,

like snow and ice, which can impact a

    vehicles performance on wintry roads.

    Mark Ballard, spokesman for Discount

    Tire Company, Americas largest

    independent tire and wheel retailer,

advises motorists to replace all four

tires with winter tires if they can expect

to encounter snow and ice during thewinter months. Its best to use winter

tires, especially if you live in an area

    with extreme weather conditions where

temperatures are below 45 degrees on

a consistent basis, he explains. Relying

on an all-season tire to do the work of a

winter tire can be dangerous to you and

    other motorists.

    In recent years, the Rubber

    Manufacturers Association (www.rma.

org) developed new standards for winter

    traction, which led to technological

    advancements in the manufacture of

winter tires. For example, a newer tread

compound featuring a higher sillicacontent retains tire flexibility even in

    freezing temperatures, allowing the tread

to maintain its grip with the highway.

Also, tread block design has been

greatly improved with the addition of

thousands of sipes, small cuts in the

tread block that provide extra biting edges

    for more traction.

Every aspect of todays winter tire has

been engineered to provide better traction

and greater ability to quickly expel water,

slush and snow, provide a quieter ride and

allow for longer tread life, says Ballard.

Winter tires tend to be slightly more

expensive than all-season ones. But likeall tires, winter tires perform optimally

    when properly inflated. Remember that

a significant drop in temperature can

lower air pressure. Typically, a 10-degree

drop will cause tires to lose a pound of

    pressure.

    LUTHER, REFORMATION

    CELEBRATE 500 YEARS IN

GERMANY(NewsUSA) - One of the events

which changed world history is now

    being commemorated in Germany. The

    Protestant Reformation, the movement

to reform the practice of Christianity

    during the sixteenth and seventeenth

    centuries, is currently being celebrated

    during the LutherDecade (2008 - 2017).

It is culminating in 2017 with the 500th

anniversary celebration of the iconicReformation leader Martin Luther nailing

the 95 Theses to the Wittenberg church.

A new website dedicated to North

    America -- Visit-Luther.com -- is explaining

    festivities to celebrate Luthers life.

LutherCountry refers to the two German

states of Saxony-Anhalt and Thuringia in

which Luther spent much of his life. The

    region includes numerous rolling hills,

    quaint villages, medieval castles and

    palaces. Visit-Luther.com encompasses

a wide range of fascinating churches and

museums that are perfect for anyone

interested in culture or history, as well as

for members of the Protestant faith. It was on October 31, 1517, that Luther

famously nailed his 95 Theses to the

door of the Castle church in Wittenberg,

outlining his thoughts on how the

Catholic Church in Europe should be

reformed. Luthers public display of his

views is considered the beginning of the

    Reformation.

The LutherDecade refers to the build-

up to 2017 during which each of the nine

years preceding has been given a special

    theme highlighting numerous activities

and events in order to offer various angles

on Luthers life and the era he lived in.

The year 2012, for instance, is focusing

on The Reformation and Music by

highlighting Luthers love for music and

    prominent composers and musicians of

the time by featuring many concerts and

    events for music lovers.

    Visit-Luther.com introduces the

American public to the fascinating aspects

of life back then, providing information

on Luthers life and the places he lived

    in LutherCountry. Many photographs

show how well the small towns and cities

    have preserved this precious heritage

up to today. An event calendar features

    festivals on music, food, Renaissance

    costumes and historical remembrances.

A special database also providesinformation on which American travel

    companies offer guided tours to

    LutherCountry and which other countries

they include. To learn more about Martin

Luthers life, LutherCountry and how to

    get there, visit www.visit-luther.com.

    ARE TEENS PREPARED FOR

THE FUTURE?(NewsUSA) - Among the latest tech

gadgets, cell phones and social media

sites, todays teen is more connected than

ever. Although teens are surrounded by a

flurry of electronics and digital media, are

they gaining the skills needed to succeed

    in a technology-driven world?

    According to the Department o

    Commerce, students educated in

    science, technology, engineering and

math at any level make 26 percent mor

    money overall than counterparts wh

    have studied in other fields.

    Several non-profits and corporations

have rallied together to highlight th

    importance of teaching young peopl

    critical digital literacy skills.

The access to technology kids ge

outside of school is often an importan

complement to the learning that happens

in the classrooms, said Dan Rauzi, senio

director of technology programs at Boys

    & Girls Clubs of America.

Boys & Girls Clubs has a long history o

    providing educational and developmental

    programs for youth in communities

    nationwide. Through a national partnershi

with Microsoft and Comcast, its CluTech program provides free software and

access to technology lessons to youth

of all ages. In 2010 alone, the program

reached over 850,000 kids who learned

how to design posters, collaborate on film

projects and make their own music.

Daniel Flores, 16, has participated in

Club Tech for two years at Boys & Girls

Club of Greater Holland, Mich. He believes

the skills he is acquiring in graphic design

will help him get into an art college and

pursue a career one day. In fact, hes

started his own small business offering

    Web and graphic design services.

I wanted to create a business that helpsother companies market and promot

their ideas by developing websites, logos

    and print making, Flores said.

According to a recent study, teens lik

    Flores who participate in after-school

    technology programs exhibit a mor

positive outlook on their future. Many als

    become more positive about finishing

    high school and attending college.

Club Tech is more than just providing

computers. We give kids and teens

    an opportunity to express themselves

    artistically and engage with technology

in a way that builds confidence and real-

    world skills, added Rauzi.
