My Dear TREX Brothers; It’s hard to believe that half of my term as Grand Master is about

over. My, but that time does fly right by. I have to say that I’m hav-ing an awesome time, and I’m getting to meet so many truly wonderful brothers throughout our organization.

Among my highlights as Grand Master has been the chance for me to develop even closer bonds with the other brothers of the Grand Chap-ter. Furthermore, I’ve had the good fortune of meeting many TREX brothers throughout our several chapters – every one a great guy and someone who makes me proud to be a TREXman.

Certainly high on my list of honors thus far was my being afforded the opportunity to represent our Triple X Fraternity as an attendee at the

5th Annual International ArmTech Conference – held this December at Stanford University in Palo Alto. Although I didn’t attend the conference itself, I did manage to attend the evening Gala Banquet where I met and chatted with a number of dignitaries. The Honorable John Heffern – U.S. Ambassador to Armenia – and I are now simply Garo and John. In addition, I had the most interesting encounter and conversation with the Armenian Prime Minister – Dickron Sarkysyan. I’ll tell you my “Dickron” story at mid-term. (See pictures on p. 21)

If all goes well, I should have visited every chapter at least once before mid-term. Yikes. I’m racking up those frequent-flier miles. Thank you to each chapter for making me feel both welcomed and important.

The Grand Chapter and I are working on a few things that will hopefully benefit our TREX fraternity and will contribute to the continued smooth operation of our order. I’ll be able to share more details about this during mid-term and during my chapter visits in the second half of my term.

I’m looking forward to seeing you all at mid-term which will be hosted by our Visalia brothers in the Sequoia Chapter.

Happy New Year, and my warm, fraternal regards –Garo Mirigian – Grand Master

PENINSULAHello Fellow Brothers, Families, and Friends! Peninsula

Chapter officers for 2012-13 are:Ruben Kazarian, Master; Vic Khachooni, Treasurer; Mark

Antranikian, Junior Master; Historian - vacant; Kip Garabedian, Recording Secretary; Aram Salmassian, Sgt. at Arms; Mark An-tranikian, Corr. Sec./Assoc. Editor; Vic Khachooni, Custodian.

Our monthly Chapter meetings are held on the evenings of the third Thursday of each month at the Los Altos Masonic Building, 146 Main Street in Los Altos. We have a nice ban-quet room and adjacent kitchen in the lower floor of the build-ing, which we use for dinner meetings during the fall and winter when the weather’s cooler, and there is also a good-sized court-yard patio which we put to good use for barbecues during the warmer months. We may be one of the smaller Chapters in the Fraternity, but we’re well-known for putting on a great meal each time, thanks to our talented and hardworking chefs! Please don’t hesitate to stop by and visit if you ever happen to be in the area.

During the Labor Day weekend in September, many of our Peninsula members had a great time attending the various func-tions during the Annual Convention hosted by the Golden Gate Chapter in San Francisco. There were nothing but good reviews for the Kef Night, Bay Cruise, Ladies Luncheon, and the Eve-ning with the Stars banquet. I’m not sure if it’s a record, but over half of our membership showed up at the business meet-ing as well! Additionally, on a personal note, I was honored at the meeting to be appointed Grand Secretary by our new Grand Master Garo Mirigian -- I hope to serve the Fraternity well and

The Peninsula Chapter was well represented at the SF Annual Con-vention. Seated clockwise from the 7 o’clock position: Earl Saroyan, Larry Karabian, Vic Khachooni, Mark Antranikian, Kip Garabedian, Vartan Berberian, Ruben Kazarian, and Vazgen Babayan; unseen due to taking this photo is our 9th attendee Zareh Salmassian.

gain valuable experience during my time on the Grand Chapter. The weekend after the Convention, our Chapter had our an-

nual fundraising food booth at the Mountain View Art & Wine Festival. There is a lot of work involved with preparing for the event beforehand, as well as cooking and selling the delicious lamb and beef kebabs during the festival itself, but our great members participate wholeheartedly, and everything went very well as we had yet another successful event! Everyone enjoyed the tasty food, and we even got several repeat customers that come to the festival specifically to buy our kebabs. A special thanks goes to Bro. Vic Khachooni for coordinating the efforts

required to make this fundraiser happen year after year!On a sad note, I’m sorry to have to report that our beloved

Historian and long-term member, Brother Joe Keshishian, passed away in late October at the age of 95. He was a founding Char-ter Member of our Peninsula Chapter, and was a member of the Triple X Fraternity for over 66 years, having joined in 1946. He was an enthusiastic member who enjoyed spending time with his fellow Brethren, held several offices over the many years includ-ing that of Master, and attended nearly every monthly meeting before his health prevented him from doing so during the past couple of years. He will be deeply missed by all; may God rest his soul.

In December, we decided to have a special Christmas din-ner, with family and prospective members invited to attend the lavish feast. The meal featured prime rib as the main entree, with plenty of other dishes to go along with it. The Brothers who organized the festivities, including our Master Ruben Kazarian, did an excellent job, as the food was outstanding and everyone had a great time! GM Garo Mirigian and his wife Aida were able to attend as well, and he let everyone know that he enjoyed the evening immensely, and was excited about the new year ahead.

I’m sure I speak for all Brothers of the Peninsula Chapter when I say we’re looking forward to seeing old friends and mak-ing new ones at the upcoming Mid-Term Convention hosted by the Sequoia Chapter in Visalia. Happy New Year!

San DiegoFor the San Diego Chapter of the Triple X Fraternity, the

Summer and Fall of 2012 were filled with some fantastic events, including our 3rd Annual Family Picnic, our 4th Annual Wine & Cheese Tasting and, of course, our Annual Christmas Party. All of the events were a great success and fun for all in attendance.

On Sunday, August 26th, on a gorgeous San Diego sum-mer’s day, we held our 3rd Annual Family Picnic at the West-wood Club in Rancho Bernardo. About 30 adults and kids were in attendance. The food included hamburgers and hot dogs, prepared by our master chef, Greg Vartanian, as well as salad, chips & dips, cookies, sodas and, of course, watermelon. The adults participated in fun conversations around the picnic tables, some fierce games of tavloo and most importantly, supervising the cook. The kids enjoyed games available at the club, which included bean bag toss, ladder ball, miniature golf, shuffleboard and others. There was also a 12” wading pool that got a lot of splishes and splashes from the toddlers (and their parents).

On Saturday, October 27th, our chapter held its 3rd Annual Wine & Cheese Tasting event at the beautiful Rancho Bernardo Courtyard. Over 100 guests were in attendance, including Ar-menians, as well as many non-Armenians, from the San Diego community. Master Michael Tusan emceed the event, along with his wife, Taleen, who assisted with the raffle. The event is our primary fundraiser and provides funds for our Student Schol-arship Program, which offers scholarships to college students of Armenian descent. This year, we were able to hand out schol-arships to four students, all of whom were in attendance. The scholarships were handed out by John Ohannian, Jr., one of our previous scholarship recipients and son of our newest member, John Ohannian, Sr. John, Jr. is now the CEO of 211, a successful

emergency resources company in San Diego. All of the San Di-ego brothers, led by PGM Joe Kellejian, worked hard at making the event a success. We also want to thank many of the wives - Jeanette Tashjian, Mary Kellejian, Claudette Hovsepian and Xrista Ohannian (also known as the “Trexettes”), for their hard work and efforts in preparing the food and creating the elegant table settings and design.

On Sunday, December 16th, we held our annual Christmas Party at Bucca Di Beppo restaurant in Carlsbad. Brothers, wives and kids enjoyed the delicious Italian food and spent much of the evening “catching up” and enjoying each other’s company during the Christmas season. The kids were also thrilled with a surprise visit from Santa Claus (also known as Bro. George Banerian). They were able to sit on Santa’s lap for pictures and each child was presented with a beautiful Nutcracker toy from Santa himself. Thanks to George Banerian for his many years of dedication to making Christmas a fun and memorable time for all of us.

After 20 years of public service, PGM Joe Kellejian re-tired from his seat on the city council of Solana Beach, where he served five 4-year terms as City Councilman and five terms as the city’s mayor. On December 12, 2012, at a meeting of the city council, an award ceremony was held and Brother Joe was recognized by his staff and an overflow crowd for his 20 years of service, not only to the City of Solana Beach, but to the entire San Diego region. Brother Joe also served, and will continue to serve, as chairman of LOSSAN Rail Corridor, which extends

Sequoia ChapterHello everyone from the Central Valley of California.

Hope all of you had a nice Christmas and a great New Years. It nice that it started raining early this year, our valley has been so dry. Our snow-capped Sierra Nevada Mountain’s look stunning, wishing you were here to see them.

Our 2012-2013 year began with a great start, and very well attended meetings. Our brotherhood loves to get together and fellowship. We have dinner meetings twice a month, on the second and fourth Wednesdays. If any Trex Brothers are in the area please join us at the Masonic Temple in Visalia at 6:30 p.m. We would all love to see you.

We had election of new officers last fall. Starting with our Master, Brother Chuck Simonian, (for a second term) Junior Master, Rick Krikorian , Treasurer, Ron Shanoian, Record-ing Secretary, Gerard Garoian, Corresponding Secretary, Charlie Amasalian, Historian, Thomas Babagian, Custodian, B.J Perch, Sergeant-at-Arms, Archie Zakarian and Web-master Master/ Auditor, Richard Tamouzian. These guys all do a great job, and are very much appreciated.

We would like to say a big THANK YOU, to all the

brothers of the Golden Gate Chapter for the hard work their committees did in hosting the Triple X 83th Annual Conven-tion in San Francisco last September, 2012. What a grand event and a beautiful city. A BIG THANK YOU again for all your efforts.

We wanted to thank all the bothers from the Selma Chap-ter Triple X for putting on a wonderful Kheyma and Lahma-joon Dinner last August. I was able to attend the Tri Chapter meeting, and we all had a wonderful time together. Thanks again to Sam Bagdasarian Jr. and his wonderful Kheyma com-mittee.

Our Sequoia Chapter also hosted several Tri Chap-ter meetings. We had bothers come for San Francisco, Los Angeles, Selma, and Fresno. We also had a nice delegation of Grand Masters. They included, Garo Mirigian,G.M., Vaughn Vartanian, PGM., Jack Ouzounian, PGM, Bob Juska-lian, PGM., Abby Mamigonian, PGM, and our very own, Jerry Poochigian,PGM. We had fifty brothers in attendance and a chance to share a delicious dinner, and visit with one another.

We wanted to thank Rick Krikorian for setting up a Night of Baseball and Dinner outing last July. This event took place over the summer and was catered by The Restaurant 225, lo-cated in downtown Visalia. Rick was able to reserve a box for us and all that attended enjoyed watching our very own semi-pro team, the Visalia Rawhide, play ball. Thanks again Rick.

We donated money once again to Relay for Life which works very hard in trying to find a cure for cancer.

This year for a second time, we donated money to the Wish Upon A Star Foundation and were able to send a child and his family to Disneyland. This family was from our local area and had a spectacular time in the Magic Kingdom.

Thanks to B.J. Berch and his family we were able to meet at Fresno State University to watch a Bulldog Football game against Colorado. We were also able to tailgate and had a wonderful dinner before the game. It was a lot of fun for the brothers and their wives. We are looking forward to attending this event again next year.

We were thankful for the opportunity to have Professor

Barlow Der Megrdechian from Fresno State University as our guest come and share about an orphanage In Armenia. House of Hope (Mer Hooys Inc.) helps young girls learn life skills and find direction that will help them become productive citizens. These gals are between ages sixteen-eighteen and have lost one or more parent. This orphanage also provides a home for fifty teenage girls. We were blessed to be able to make a donation to this wonderful home for young Armenian girls. Professor Barlow Der Megrdechian is a board member of this orphanage.

We continue to give back to our community by supporting two local high schools. Dinuba and Redwood High Schools, both have Future Farmers of America Clubs. Students raise lambs and then sell them at the Tulare County Fair. This year Sequoia Trex purchased two lambs. We then stored the lambs at Sark and Charlie Davidian ranch for over a month. We then invited members from other Trex Chapters to come to our annual “Feed the Armenian Night”. We had an out-standing night together, and the lamb’s we purchased were de-licious. There were over fifty Trex brothers in attendance, and we invited potential new Armenians to join us for a great time. Thanks to Dean Ametjian for preparing and cooking the lamb. Thanks also goes to our Treasurer, Ron Shanoian for making perfect pilaf, and all of the Trex brothers who helped cook two whole lambs. What an excellent job you all did in serving our Hye brothers and prospective new members.

We look forward to seeing everyone at the mid-term this year here in Visalia on Saturday, March 2, 2013, more infor-mation forth coming.

We hope that this New Year God will continue to bring you blessings, good health and great family get-togethers.

“It is simply in the nature of Armenian to study, to learn, to question, to speculate, to discover, to invent, to revise, to restore, to preserve, to make, and to give.” William Saroyan

Tom Babagian, P.M. Associate Editor

Sequoia JuniorsThis past year has been a great success for the Sequoia Ju-

niors. Between biamscuit orders from KFC and 40oz bottles of the finest malt liquor the central valley has to offer. We have really come to enjoy the finer things in life.

In Brotherhood we trust, Amen. -Kevin Skaffb

We had many events in the past year, the most memorable was the Dancing with the Stars of XXX, it was an event to raise money for our Kirk Bazoian Scholarship. Bro Gary Setian with his wife won the overall Ballroom event, they dazzled the crowd with their moves on the dance floor, and raised lots of money for the fund. We also gave out scholarships to 2 deserving students, Christine Krikorian and Talar Darakjian. To date our Scholarship fund has given out $7,000.00, and we plan on keeping this tradition for the years to come .

SelmaDear Brothers, On September 20th, 2012, the Selma Triple X Fraternity

hosted Rodney Terry Night at the Fresno Triple X Fraternity Club House. He is the newly hired head coach of the Fresno State men’s basketball team. During the event, Coach Terry and his staff interacted with many brothers, friends, family, and guests of our beloved fraternity. In addition, he spoke about the upcom-ing basketball season for the Bulldogs, and answered questions over a delicious rib-eye steak dinner – which was cooked by Bro. Sam Bagdasarian and his infamous kitchen crew. *Don’t forget to vote for him for Grand Master at the Annual Triple X Conven-tion in Selma during Labor Day Weekend!

Moving forward, we hosted another spectacular event at St. Paul Armenian Apostolic Church – the infamous Turkey Bingo. Friends and family of Selma Triple X Fraternity enjoyed an eve-ning of bingo with an amazing dinner. Plus, guests that attended the event had the opportunity of winning numerous gifts, prizes, and turkeys to enjoy during the upcoming holiday season.

To end, we would like to express how grateful we are to be host-ing the Annual Triple X Convention this year. We have been busy

Los AngelesDear Brothers:The LA Chapter keeps quite a busy calendar during the year,

with many months containing 2 events. In July we kicked off the summer with our Hollywood Park LA Trex day at races. Past Master John Saroyan put together a great event, complete with VIP seating, brunch and a race named after The Los Angeles Tri-ple X Fraternity.

Another great event we look forward to is Wives Night Out, Chaired by Art Avazian, Zareh Mitilian , John Casparian, Steve Hampar, Matt Matoesian and all of their wives. The committee meetings were Trex Events themselves. Bro Armen and Nora Hampar offered their beautiful house and yard for the event on a warm summer night. We enjoyed an amazing catered dinner and were entertained by Lory Tatoulian, the well-known Armenian ac-tress, producer and comedian. Bro Jimmy Gondjian was quick to volunteer for a comedy bit and ended up stealing the show. Spe-cial thanks to all the Brothers and wives on the committee as well as Armen and Nora Hampar for offering their home for the event!

In September over 35 Los Angeles Brothers made the trip to San Francisco to support our Fraternity’s Annual Convention hosted by the Golden Gate Chapter. Our Golden Gate Brothers did a superb job and we all had a wonderful time. Among all of the great events, one stood out the most – the full Military Color Guard at the Business Meeting to lead us in the Pledge. The video is on Golden Gate’s website and is a must-see. Congratulations to our new Grand Master Garo Mirigian with the gavel being passed to him by PGM Vaughn Vartanian.

Bro Jimmy Melikian generously donates his beautiful Palos Verdes house every year in September for our Cigar Night. Bro Jimmy puts together a nice spread of hors d’oeuvre, brandy and other liquors – and Brothers are allowed to smoke inside the house while the wives enjoy the view outside. Thank you Bro Jimmy!

Also in September, the Los Angeles Chapter hosted the An-nual Ararat Home Picnic chaired by a great committee made up of Bros William Kevorkian, John Casparian, Shant Dergazarian, Joe Ouzounian, PGM David Maseredjian, Galen Petoyan, Rich-ard Jebejian & Michael Surmeian. With the help of almost all our members, wives and many of their kids, we served well over 1200 hearty meals. This is the Home’s biggest event of the year and

Bro Jimmy assuming his role as the Godfather at Wives Night out at Bro Armen and Nora Hampar’s house for Gypsy Nights.

PGM Mel and Bro Tev enjoy a tasty beverage toasting to their co-chair, Bro Martin who was back at the hospitality suite setting up the room for the Annual Stagg Outing

our Chapter is proud to make such a significant contribution of our time and talents to the Home.

In October Bro Tev Eminian, PGM Mel Shanoian and Bro Martin Titizian co-chaired our Annual Stagg Outing at the Westin Resort in Palm Desert. Two days of golf, 15 hours of gin (over 2 nights), great food, drink and fraternalism. Bro Chuck Simonian from the Sequoia Chapter didn’t disappoint us and brought the spicy pickled eggs to test the resilience of our digestive systems. Saturday night Bro Tev organized a great dinner out at Babe’s Steakhouse in a private room. Thank you again Bro Tev, PGM Mel and Bro Martin – this is one of our favorite events.

Later in October Bro Gary Zakarian & William Kevorkian

15

chaired our annual Installation Banquet at the beautiful Porter Valley Country Club to honor our outgoing Master, Ara Papazian and his executive board as well as welcome our new Master Chris Armen. Bro’s Gary and William and their wives Aline and Diana sacrificed to make this such a top notch event. It was a full house that night with over 120 guests – including Grand Master Garo. Everyone enjoyed the cocktail hour, buffet dinner, raffle and pro-gram. Bro George Parigian was honored for his 50 yrs in the Triple X. Also receiving an award was Bro Mark Mikaelian who won the Club Golf Championship and the coveted Ken Khteian Award was won by Bro Tev Eminian. Outstanding work by Bro’s Gary & William with special thanks to their wonderful wives.

In November Bros John Casparian and Stan Roopenian chaired the Annual Gin Tournament. The players battled until about midnight when the winners were determined. Bro George Parigian and Bro Tev Emenian went undefeated in a double elimi-nation format, being crowned the 1st place winners. Taking 2nd place were Bro’s Steve Mikaelian and Steve Hampar. All players were treated to an unbelievable dinner and drinks. Thank you for the great event Bros John and Stan.

In December several of the wives co-chair our Family Christ-mas Party. Laura Surmeian, Candice Titizian & Lara Titizian have been putting this event on for a number of years. About 60 Brothers, families and grandchildren enjoyed the event complete with a great meal and incredible desserts by Lara Titizian. The girls arrange for crafts for the kids and a visit from Santa himself. Bro Steve Mikaelian agreed to play Santa one last time. Those of you familiar with the event or our previous Trex News articles know of Bro Steve’s track record for disaster in this role. Mi-raculously, there were no wardrobe malfunctions. Unfortunately, Bro Steve frightened all the children and they began scream-ing uncontrollably. Concerned there was an emergency, Ararat Home personnel burst into the room with a defibrillator. In spite of there being no medical emergency, the Ararat staffed shocked Bro Steve just so he would stop scaring the kids. The screaming subsided almost immediately and Bro Steve was carried from the room. Special thanks to the wives that organized the party and to Bro Steve Mikaelian for again sacrificing his body.

2013 will be another great year for the LA Chapter and we look forward to the upcoming events.

Regards,Bro Michael SurmeianAssociate Editor & Jr. Master

Bro Steve was unable to entice a single child to sit with him. Instead, kids were screaming uncontrollably. Shortly after this picture was taken, Bro Steve was shocked with a defi-brillator and removed from the room. Man Down!

Past Master Armen Karimyan and his wife Larissa gra-ciously invited all of the Palm Desert Trex brothers and their wives for a Christmas Party and celebration in their lovely home in La Quinta. Everyone enjoyed an evening filled with dancing to live music and delicious food. It was the perfect start to the holiday season and we thank PM Armen for organizing this very successful holiday event.

Our annual “Family Day at the Fair” at the Riverside Coun-ty Date Festival is set for the three-day holiday weekend and will be held this year on February 16, 2013. We hope that you can all come and enjoy our desert hospitality at this annual event.

The popular Palm Desert XXX Golf Outing and Reverse Raffle will be held again this year and is scheduled for May 4, 2013. The weather in the desert in May is perfect for golf and could also be your “lucky” month for winning the cash prize raffle. Be sure to contact a Palm Desert brother for more infor-mation on how you can enter the golf tournament and get your raffle ticket. Good luck!

Mark your calendars and watch for more information on other upcoming events throughout the year. Everyone is invited to come down and enjoy our Desert and participate in these events. Our brothers look forward to your visits and also to seeing every-one at the annual Midterm Convention and Labor Day Conven-tion in Visalia. As always, we welcome all visiting brothers to our meetings, which are held on the 3rd Wednesday of each month.

Los Angeles JuniorsDear Brothers,This year has been an exciting year for the Los Angeles

juniors. I would like to thank our outgoing Master of the Los Angeles Junior Triple-X chapter, Brother, Vaughn Vartanian, Jr., for doing a great job in leading our chapter last year. In the months following our annual Convention, the LA Juniors have been very busy. All our brothers have been very active in par-ticipating at various events and also with contributing great new ideas for future events. As the new Master for the coming year, I am excited to continue to strengthen our presence within the Triple-X and contribute to the growth of our fraternity.

We hosted a first-time event at the end of summer that proved to be very successful. Since the event was held in Octo-ber, it was themed as a “Beer Fest”. Brother Varoujan Movses-sian shared his home-brewed private stock and beer fest festivi-ties ensued.

It was exciting to see that so many of the LA Junior broth-ers were able to attend the 2012 Convention in San Francisco. The Juniors especially enjoyed the dinner cruise under the Gold-en Gate Bridge and all the excitement that San Francisco had to offer for a wonderful weekend together with brothers, family and friends.

The LA Juniors were a strong presence at the Los Angeles Installation Dinner in October. Several awards from previous years were presented to many of our members for well-deserved recognition of service. The LA Seniors always have an great program planned, as well as a large amount of great raffle prizes to lend excitement to the evening.

In keeping with our party traditions, this year’s annual Ugly Sweater Party was held at the Vartanian home. Each year, this party gets more popular and is the perfect way to start the holi-day season. It is never too soon to start looking for next year’s “ugly sweater”!

Several of the Juniors are planning to attend the Palm Des-ert Chapter’s “Family Day at the Fair” at the Riverside County Date on February 16, 2013. We are looking forward to spending some time with the Festival Queen and Princesses (of course we are!).

We hope that you will “Save the Date” for a future event we have planned for all Los Angeles Juniors past and present. We invite you to attend “Junior Families Sunday Dinner”, sometime in the spring (Date to come soon) This will be a great opportu-nity for brothers and their families to reminisce the old days and

Master, Michael Nigosian with the Queens of the Fair at Palm Des-ert’s Day at the Fair

The Juniors on the Convention Cruise

also to create new traditions for the future. Come have an old fashioned Sunday family dinner with us!

The LA Juniors are looking forward to seeing everyone at the annual Midterm Convention in Visalia. We wish you all a prosperous and Happy New Year 2013!

Golden GateThis was an extremely exciting last half of the year for the

TREX Golden Gate Chapter. Two years in the planning, the Chapter hosted the Annual TREX convention over the Labor Day weekend, August 31 through September 3, 2012. It was by all accounts a tremendous success, wonderful parties, lots of kef, and dancing. A highpoint for the Golden Gate Chapter was the election of Brother Dr. Garo Mirigian to the post of Trex Grand Master (pictured below). We know that Grand Master Garo will

be an excellent champion for the cause. Another event in the Chapter’s territory was the St. John’s

Church Bazaar held in October. Below are Brothers Ara Kapri-elian, Hartley Appleton and Richard Surabian caught in the act…

Our chapter has taken up helping our neighboring Hye communities by manning their BBQs and cooking kebab your grandfathers would be proud of; for the Peninsula, Oakland (St.Vartan), and Diablo chap-ters, and at St. Gregory’s and Calvary Baptist church bazaars in San Francisco. Also captured at the St. John’s Bazaar was our very own and very famous cente-narian and hostess- supreme of chapter meetings “Auntie Lou” and family (pictured) with son-in-law Bro Hagop Koujakian [stripes], great nephew Bro Mark Dorian [Go Giants!], Marian Dorian [niece] and Jenna Dorian [great grand niece]

Triple X Fraternity of California/Nevada held its Annual Convention in San Francisco. The convention was hosted by Golden Gate Chapter over the Labor Day weekend August 31 to September 3. The activities were held at the spacious and beautiful parc55 Wyndham Hotel near Union Square. Delegates, members and families came from throughout California and Las Vegas to participate in the activities and meetings. On Sunday morning was the main business meeting where Mr. Garo Mirigian who resides in the Bay area with his wife, was elected Grand Master to lead the fraternity for the coming year. Serving with Mr. Mirigian are the following Officers; George Kamian, Jr. Grand Master; Ara Kaprielian, Grand Treasurer; Mark Antranikian, Grand Secretary; Jeff Apkarian, Grand Marshal; Shant DerGazarian, Grand Historian; Jack Ouzounian, Grand Editor.

Mr. Mirigian is a retired public school educator, with over 40 years as a classroom teacher and a school principal. He has 7 college degrees, including a doctorate in Leadership and Educational Renewal. Currently he is the Regional Director of Student Teaching for National University (San Jose Center).

In addition to the business meeting the host chapter had many activities planned for the guests. Friday night was the welcoming “kef” night where more than 200 enjoyed visiting and dancing with friends and families. Saturday night’s Bay Cruise was an unforgettable evening enjoyed by over 300 guests, families and friends. And Sunday Night’s Convention Ball saw entertainment and music for dancing by Dean Martin impersonator. Also, the Golden Gate chapter had arranged for mini tours of Chinatown, Mt. Davidson Armenian Cross, Fisherman’s Wharf.

This year’s convention set a new milestone in Triple X’s activities. Under the leadership of last year’s Grand Master Vaughn Vartanian the Fraternity finally made a big leap forward

by adopting new tools for communication. Under his guidance and efforts communication within 14 chapters were done electronically and by heavy use of the internet. The fraternity’s website was developed whereby each chapter was able to access or post their chapter’s activities with ease (trexfraternity.com).

TRIPLE X FRATERNITY was founded by eight young men of Armenian heritage in the year 1918 in Fresno, California. The name “Triple X” was adopted for the organization and was to represent three times the Roman numeral ten, added up, summed thirty which was the total number of members they hoped to acquire and limit the group’s size. Now the membership is over eight hundred.

The purpose and objectives of this Fraternity is to promote charity, benevolence, mental improvement, social culture, and strengthening of the bonds of friendship among its members; to observe and adhere to the principles of truth, justice and loyalty. Each chapter operates independently in raising funds for local charities or events.
