Student Reactions to Web 2.0 Tools

• I like moving around• this is a way to meet other students in the class• I enjoy using my hands• I get tired of writing all the time so podcasting is

a fun change• I work harder on these assignments because all

my friends in the class will see them• I enjoy creating assignments that look

professional• I like having the opportunity of showing my work

to a wider audience

However......

Despite the successes we experienced using Web 2.0 tools in the classroom, there were still technological challenges in the school.

What do you do if.....

Jason arrives to school with his World Issues ISU essay on a USB key. He tries to open it at school but is unable to because his word processor at home is incompatible with the school's word processor. His ISU essay is due in 20 minutes and Jason can't get home...

Maria creates a presentation for her Law class on a Macintosh computer at home. Unfortunately all the computers at the school are PCs and she is unable to show her presentation. WHAT DO YOU DO?


You have assigned a group presentation in your ENG 4U1 class. In one group, three students have part-time jobs, two students are on the Rugby team and one student is trying to earn their 40 community hours. They are unable to get together after school to work on the group project due to their incompatible calendars. WHAT DO YOU DO?


You are teaching a grade 12 History course and the final June essays are due. One of your students comes to you and says that his computer crashed and he lost all his work. He's not sure when he will be able to submit the paper. WHAT DO YOU DO?


You have asked your Grade 10 Science class to do their class presentations using Power Point. Three students in your class tell you they are unable to do this assignment because they do not have this program on their home computers and there is a limited number of school computers with Power Point due to the licensing fees? Google Apps - Implementation

Step 1• you need to own a web domain that is

tied with your school• (can be purchased for about $12 per

year)


Step 2• Go to the Google Apps - Education• Edition and register your school with the

domain name• - Google will contact you in and have it

set up in 1 - 6 weeks


Step 3• Setup mapping on Internet Server to

provide email addresses off the domain name

Step 4• Get a text file of students and teachers

which include first name, last name, login and password

• You could use the text file of students from Markbook.

• An initial can be substituted for the last name


Step 5• Get a students to sign (with parents)code
