President’s Message
Hello Everyone, Spring is just around the corner and the flying season is about to begin. Actually, for some people the flying season never stopped, but that is a story for another day. The annual “concours d’élégance” will take place at the April 5
th meeting in the
McNabb Community Center. We would like to see lots of people bring in their new creations for everybody to admire. There is more information published in this issue. The next event on our calendar is the annual ORCC Helicopter Fun Fly on Saturday May 7th 2011 at Drummond Field. We will be looking for a few volunteers to help run the event. In fact, we need somebody to volunteer as our Chief Helicopter Instructor. Are you a skilled helicopter pilot who is willing to help the new guys? Please step forward and offer your services to the membership. We are looking forward to a good season in 2011. We are very fortunate to have the flying fields that we have. In the coming months we will invite volunteers to come out and put in some work on our facilities at Drummond Field and Greenway Field. The more people who show up, the sooner the work gets done and the more flying we can do. Don’t forget that you must renew your membership before you can fly. And as always, fly safely. See you at the flying field, Mike Toner President

Fast Charging - Will it harm my packs? Applicable to Ni-Cd and Ni-Mh batteries …. First, let's define "fast charge". The industry standard is any charge rate that will charge the cells in 1 hour or less. This fast charge capability thing is very interesting. Almost all ni-cds manufactured today for R/C systems can accept fast charge (up to C rate, that's the rate at which you can charge the cells in approximately one hour). Cells that are specifically sold as fast chargeable go through another step in the process. This step involves charging a sample from the production lot and then measuring the end of charge voltage. Cells with the highest end of charge voltage are then analyzed for internal pressure. If the internal pressure is acceptable, that is not above a preset limit, the whole production lot is "blessed" as being fast chargeable. Of course this adds a finite amount of cost to the cell as they must be "formed" prior to being ship in order to be fast chargeable. Cells not destined for fast charge applications are shipped "unformed" by some manufacturers. Forming the cell is the process of the first charge after it is assembled. Nothing more, nothing less. When you charge your R/C system packs for the first time you are "forming" them. This is why you see the instructions telling you to charge the packs for 16 to 24 hours before you first use the system. Some manufacturers ship all their cells in the formed condition as part of their manufacturing process. So, in most instances, you are safe fast charging the R/C packs (transmitter or receiver) on the market if you first make sure they get a good first cycle formation charge - 24 hours at the slow rate. Where the problems arise is that some of the fast charge systems available are a little sloppy when it comes to terminating the fast charge or they are pushing the cells too hard (higher than the C rate charge) and then damage occurs. As a rule of thumb if you packs are not getting hot (slightly warm is OK) you are not damaging them in the fast charge process. When pushing too much current into cells not designed to accept it, there is the risk of driving the cells above 1.6 volts (the hydrogen over voltage point) and electrolysing the water in the electrolyte and generating hydrogen. This is a cumulative event and repeated fast charge at these rates will result in sufficient accumulation of hydrogen to cause the cells to vent. When they do vent there is a chance that the chemical balance will be disturbed and the cell capacity will fade. Understand that the pack may not be fully charged when the fast charge terminates. It is a good practice if you are going to fast charge frequently, to top off the packs using the slow charger. This will bring all cells to the same state of charge and "balance" the pack. Otherwise the cell that is not fully charged will be the limiting cell on the next discharge. This continues until there is a major unbalance in the pack and one cell can be driven into reverse (if you don't crash first).

Flying is the second greatest thrill known to man

"Your seat cushions can be used for flotation. In the event of an emergency water landing, please take them with our compliments."
Maho Beach is a beach situated in Saint Maarten. The Princess Juliana International Airport is
situated immediately adjacent to the beach. Incoming air traffic is known to have to touch down as
close as possible to the beginning of runway 10 due to the short runway length of 2,180
meters/7,152 ft, resulting in low-flying aircraft on their final approach over the beach.
The Sunset Beach Bar and Grill has a speaker on its outside deck that broadcasts the radio
transmissions between pilots and the airport's control tower. I don’t know about you but I sure am tempted to go there for a cold one!

For Laughs....
For the Ladies....
Eleven people were hanging on a
rope under a helicopter, ten men
and one woman. The rope was not
strong enough to carry them all so
they decided that one had to drop
off, otherwise they were all going
to fall. They were finding it hard to
choose that person. The woman,
contemplating her life, made a very
touching speech. She said that she
would voluntarily let go of the rope
because as a woman, she was used
to giving up everything for her
husband and kids, and for men in
general without ever getting
anything in return. As soon as she
finished her speech, all the men
started clapping their hands.

2011 Wings Training Program……….NEWSFLASH….
Hi Everyone,
There are some exciting new changes for this year’s Wings Training Program. We will be
offering an improved method of teaching R/C powered flying and tracking your progress.
Students will be required to purchase the training manual "One week to Solo" from the
club. This manual contains a ton of information on the fundamentals of flight, controls
and how to use them to fly successfully. All manoeuvres that are required in order to pass
your test are covered in detail in the manual.
Training will be done in stages, breaking down the training into smaller segments. This
allows the students to focus on a smaller set of goals/requirements in order to progress to
the next stage. The course is designed to be student paced. Students will progress
through each stage at their own pace. Progression will be tracked by a flight log that
students will be required to carry with them. Students will be able to download a flight
logbook from the ORCC webpage that they must bring for every training session. ORCC
instructors will be able to read your flight log to review your progress in the training
program. This will allow the instructor to work with the next available student, read the
logbook and know where to focus attention on. After each flight, the instructors will write
in the logbook and show you what the next flight will be focused on.
There will now be a written test to demonstrate knowledge of club rules and MAAC
safety guidelines, and the practical wings solo demonstrated to a flight instructor. Upon
successfully graduating, students will receive a set of MAAC Pilot Wings and a
certificate from not only the ORCC, but from MAAC as well.
Cheers,
Chief Flying Instructor

I bet it won’t be long before Marcos is hanging out on the field with the rest of us!
First Event of 2011
This year, winter fun flying did not turnout as I was hoping for. The weather is always the big factor and ultimately will determine the outcome of any flying event. The Wind was gusting 35 km with the temperature at -12, it felt like -30. On Saturday morning, Paul Bradbeer called me wondering if due to weather condition, I would change the date for the event. I said it was a little late, “no point to change it now” We gathered at the field after 9:00 am. Mike Toner set up the heater and as soon as Ramona and Paul Bradbeer arrived, we had coffee with Baileys and brownies. Twelve members registered for the ORCC famous chilly lunch. Ramona brought Disaronno Liquor. I could not believe she remembered my comment at the executive meeting about how I prefer a shot of Disaronno over Baileys! Many thanks to Ramona and Paul Bradbeer for their effort to make this event more pleasant. Dave Penchuk and Tyler Blackwell, were the only ones that managed to fly for a short period of time. Ramona and I had the opportunity to take pictures of their flying. This year ORCC winter fun flying was sponsored by Great Hobbies. They provided us with 60% off on event purchases. On behalf of ORCC I would like to thank Dave Rees and his organization for their generous contributions. I hope all members continue to support our local hobby stores. I would like to take this opportunity to thank everyone for joining us in the first event of 2011. Even though we were unable to fly, it was a great social gathering. I hope to see you all at the many upcoming events. Shahram Ghorashi ORCC Winter and Fall Fun Flying Chairman

Easter holiday is a celebration of the resurrection of Christ.
Jesus Christ, The Son of God, bled and died for us in a sacrifice.
Please take time to slow down, take a deep breath and listen…
The birds will sing their songs of
praise as we begin to feel the warmth of the sun's rays.
As we say "Goodbye" to the
winter's gloom, the flowers and trees have already begun to bloom.
All of life's beauty, The Lord created
for us all to share. Spring breezes begin to flow,
sending fragrances through the air.
The winter's thawing will let the rivers, lakes, and streams rise and
flow. The beauty of the Earth will make
us all feel aglow!
Let's be grateful for the LORD, let's rejoice and sing.
If it wasn't for the Lord, we
wouldn't have anything!
Enjoy your chocolate treats too!
What you missed at our last club meeting:
At the March 2nd club meeting, the past year’s budget was reviewed. We
are in pretty good shape but could definitely use larger turn outs at our
events!
Paul gave a talk about engines and many participated in discussions about
various tips and techniques to consider when working on and maintaining
engines. There were some older tricks of the hobby being discussed by
long term members that sounded quite interesting.
I have one question…is there any truth to these tricks? Now there is a
topic we can add to TopCap! If you have a trick to share, please contact
Ramona.

Did you know…..?
Radio control technology has been in use since 1893, when Nikola Tesla created a boat that was controlled by transmitted radio waves. Tesla discovered remote control and patented a radio controlled robot-boat in November 8, 1898.
He used radio waves to move a robot-boat in a small pool of water in Madison Square Garden.
A heavy, low-lying, steel craft about four feet long. It powered itself; there were several large batteries on board. Radio signals controlled switches, which energized the boat's propeller, rudder, and scaled-down running lights—simple enough in concept, but quite difficult to accomplish with existing devices.
Concours d’élégance
The annual ORCC concours d'élégance will be held during the April 5th meeting at the McNabb Community Center. All are invited to bring in their new projects for everyone to admire. Even if your project is not fully complete, please bring it in anyway so that we can enjoy it. The whole point of having a Concourse is to encourage people to build, and to recognize those who do build. Members of ORCC are eligible to win prizes. The prize will be awarded to the person who built the model, if the person who owns the model is not the builder. Non-members are encouraged to bring in their models for display, but are not eligible to win prizes. Attendees will vote for their favourite models in the following categories: Scale This is a scale model of a "real" aircraft which has either been assembled from a kit or scratch built. (Not ARF). It can be an airplane, helicopter, sailplane, or any other type of aircraft. An example would be a Cessna 210 or a Bell 202. Sport This is a model which has been assembled from a kit or scratch-built, but is not a scale model of a "real" aircraft. It can be an airplane, helicopter, sailplane, or any other type of aircraft. An example would be a PT-40 or a Raptor 40. ARF This is for models which are Almost-Ready-to-Fly or Ready-To-Fly. Prizes will be awarded as follows: Grand Champion: $25 (can only be Sport or Scale, not ARF) Scale 1st place: $15 Scale 2nd place: $10 Sport 1st place: $15 Sport 2nd place: $10 ARF 1st place: $15 ARF 2nd place: $10 After someone gets voted Grand Champion, two other models will be first and second for the category that the champion came from. There will be a designated "Category Deciding Arbitrator" on hand to settle any confusion that may arise about a model belonging to one category or another. See you there! Last year’s Grand Champion was….

Note from the Editor
Hello Everyone, Well, Spring is definitely in the air. I am sure a lot of you are hoping to have your planes in the air very soon too. At this time of the year, I find myself noticing that people seem to be more pleasant. I see more smiles instead of frowns and experience less road rage on my way to work at the wee hours of the day. Personally, I am looking forward to seeing the tulips and daffodils come out and say hello. Here’s to fresh air, more sunshine, clear runways and good times together on the fields. I hope to see you around at the meetings and events and look forward to hearing from you soon. (Hint, hint!!)
