Rugby League On Tuesday in week 2, two rugby league teams from St Monica's competed in the Royce Simmons (Years 3&4) and Greg Alexander (Years 5&6) Shields. Both teams of boys represented their school with pride and played with great courage and determination in every game. Their sportsmanship was noted by many of the spectators present on the day. Our Year 5&6 boys played some very good teams winning one game convincingly and going down to two quality sides in tough games. The Year 3&4 boys won all four of their games and in doing so won the Hawkesbury section of the competition and will play some further games at a later date. I would like to thank Mr Bill Jansen and Mrs Kellyanne Kemble for their invaluable assistance with the Junior Boys on the day and to all those parents who were able to lend their support as well. Thank You,

Mr Mark Feneley

Gymnastics Charlotte R (3W) & Jasmine R (4W) were selected to compete at the NSW State Gymnastics Championships held recently. Charlotte placed 7th in her age group for tumbling. Jasmine placed 2nd in her age group for tumbling, and has qualified to compete at the Australian National Championships to be held in Melbourne at the end of May.

A big congratulations girls!

Yr. 2 Class Visit

Last Thursday, Year 2 had some very special visitors. Dr Ian Wright is a scientist who works at Western Sydney University and

he investigates the impact of human activities on creeks and rivers of the Sydney basin. He told us all about his work

investigating the health of a river, and what we can do to care for the river. We found him to be extremely passionate and

enthusiastic about his work, and he has inspired us to be better caretakers of our environment. Dr Ian’s sister, Sally, also came

and showed us how to draw scientific illustrations.

Maths is Fun at home … Here is a maths activity you can play at home with your children.

Beat That!

Skills: Equipment:

Number 2 dice or up to 7 dice for older players Place value Paper and pencil for scoring Strategic thinking

How to play : Roll the dice and put them in order to make the highest number possible. If you roll a 4 and a 6, for example, your best answer would be 64. Using 3 dice, a roll of 3, 5 and 2 should give you 532, and so on. Write down your answer, pass the dice, and challenge the next player to “Beat That!” Play in rounds and assign a winner to each round.

For a change, try making the smallest number possible! This is a great game for reinforcing the concept of place value. If you are playing with younger children, explain your reasoning out loud and encourage them to do the same.

The countdown begins St Monica’s!! National Simultaneous Storytime is an annual campaign that aims to encourage more young Australians to read and enjoy books.

Our school will join together in the hall to read ‘The Cow Tripped Over the Moon’. The theme of the story is perseverance, friendship and triumph!

The Plan

A short promo will take place on Tuesday (23rd May)

Come together to share the book in the hall at 11am on Wednesday 24th May The children will have a slightly different eating time - 10:20 - 10:30 Play time 10:30 - 11:00 Seated in hall for 11.

Leanne Duval Teacher Librarian, LTST and Reading Recovery Teacher

Our Mothers, Grandmother’s & Carers enjoyed a lovely breakfast and Liturgy on Monday celebrating Mother’s Day

Competition Time……

Nude food is held every Tuesday. Nude food is about eating healthy, unprocessed food and bringing it to

school in reusable containers. It is not only healthy for your body but it is great for the environment by

preventing rubbish.

On Tuesday the 30th May in week 6, there will be a Nude Food tasting competition. Students

who would like to participate will be asked to cook a healthy Nude food recipe and bring it in,

in a Nude food container for a panel of judges to taste and judge. There will be prizes for 1st,

2nd and 3rd.

Looking forward to seeing all of the great recipes.
