The Magic Millions Gold Coast Yearling Sale gets underway this morning with the first of the 240 lots catalogued set to go under the

hammer at 10am. Vendors have been busy since inspections

got underway at the Gold Coast Sales Complex last Wednesday and confidence is high ahead of the first yearling sale of 2017.

Recent graduates of the Magic Millions Gold Coast Yearling Sale include the champion mare Winx (Street Cry), last year’s Golden Slipper Stakes (Gr 1, 1200m) winner Capitalist (Written Tycoon) and the dual Group One-winning three-year-old Global Glamour (Star Witness).

Millions 2YO Classic (RL, 1200m) was held yesterday at Surfers Paradise, with Houtzen (I Am Invincible), the pre-post favourite, drawing the outside barrier for the $2,000,000 race.

Trainer Toby Edmonds said the draw made Houtzen's task difficult and that she would need luck to preserve her unbeaten record.

"It is hard to get cover from that barrier but it is what it is," Edmonds said.

The daughter of I Am Invincible (Invincible Spirit) shot to outright favouritism for the Magic Millions 2YO Classic after her dominant four and a half length victory at the Gold Coast last Saturday, her second big margin victory from just two starts.

A $105,000 purchase by her trainer from last year’s Magic Millions Gold Coast Yearling Sale from the draft of Yarraman Park Stud, she is one of two fillies in the field by Yarraman Park’s I Am Invincible, with colt Zukaz (I Am Invincible) the third emergency.

The Gai Waterhouse and Adrian Bott-trained Invincible Star (I Am Invincible), a $200,000 purchase at last year’s sale, again from the draft of Yarraman Park Stud, by Waterhouse and Julian Blaxland drew barrier 16.

Invincible Star pleased Waterhouse in a 600 metre work out at Eagle Farm yesterday ahead of her tilt in the race.

"She is a seasoned traveller now and I didn't want to rush her into the race," she said.

I Am Invincible has 47 lots catalogued for this year’s sale including Invincible Star’s sister, who will be offered tomorrow as Lot 391.

Another favoured runner in Saturday’s race is the Lindsay Park-trained Madeenaty (Exceed And Excel), who drew barrier one yesterday.

Co-trainer David Hayes told ANZ Bloodstock News yesterday that he believes Madeenaty, a $9 chance, is over the odds. She was a $775,000 purchase by Shadwell Australasia from the draft of her breeder Segenhoe Stud at last year’s sale.

The Maribyrnong Trial Stakes (Listed, 1000m) and Wyong Magic Millions 2YO Classic winner (RL, 1100m) arrived on the Gold Coast on Tuesday night.

At her second start, Madeenaty finished third behind Invincible Star in the Ottawa Stakes (Gr 3, 1000m) on 1 November after racing on the inferior inside section of the Flemington straight.

“I’m really happy, she has come on from Wyong and I think she is over the odds,” Hayes said.

“She will sit second or third and she will get the run of the race (from barrier one).”

Segenhoe Stud’s Peter O’Brien said Shadwell Australia’s Angus Gold was an astute judge who purchased Madeenaty at last year’s sale having not attended the Magic Millions for a number of years.

“Angus Gold is not only a terrific judge but a great friend,” O’Brien said.

“He’s actually bought two yearlings off us. There is Madeenaty and the other is a Group Two winner in South Africa - we’ve got a 100 per cent strike rate of stakes horses.

“It’s what it’s all about - producing a racehorse. (Segenhoe Stud graduate) Nikitas came second in the Magic Millions 2YO Classic last year and hopefully Madeenaty can go one better this year.”

Madeenaty is by Darley’s champion stallion Exceed And Excel (Danehill), who has 17 yearlings on offer in Book One of the sale.

Hayes said the Magic Millions Gold Coast Yearling Sale catalogue looked strong.

“There’s too many to look at, but we are enjoying it and hopefully we can get some (more like Madeenaty) for next year,” Hayes said.

“We will be trying to buy some precocious two-year-olds to hopefully get them here for the Magic Millions carnival next year for the wonderful stake money.”

Trainer Gary Portelli told ANZ Bloodstock News after the barrier draw that Falconic (Nicconi) was drawn to get every chance on Saturday.

The son of Nicconi (Bianconi), who is eligible for the ladies’ only owners bonus, drew barrier eight with regular jockey Koby Jennings booked to take the ride.

“We are happy with the draw (and it should suit) as he’s going to be a midfield sort of horse,” Portelli said.

“There will be good pressure early and being a ladies’ syndication horse as well, so we have to make sure we protect that and finish in the top three or four and hopefully get that trophy as well.

“The bonus is $345,000 and we are happy to be in the race and I think we have a good chance.”

Portelli said Falconic, who won second up over 1200 metres at Rosehill on 24 December, would wear blinkers on Saturday.

“We’ve tapered his work now until the race and the blinkers will help him concentrate.”

The Chris Waller-trained From Within (Not A Single Doubt) drew alongside Falconic in barrier seven with Hugh Bowman taking the ride.

Now a $3.80 equal favourite with CrownBet after yesterday’s barrier draw, From Within was an impressive all-the-way winner over 1100 metres on debut at Canterbury on 31 December when ridden by Glyn Schofield.

Trainer Chris Munce was delighted when undefeated colt and last start B J McLachlan Stakes (Gr 3, 1200m) winner Ours To Keep (Seidnazar) drew barrier four.

"It should give him every chance as there should be plenty of pace and he can get a sit," Munce said.

Ours To Keep shortened to $8 but Munce's other runner, the undefeated Calaway Gal Stakes (Listed, 1110m) winner Champ Elect (Choisir) drew barrier 17.

Trainer Bjorn Baker said his representative in the lucrative race, Snitzel (Redoute’s Choice) colt Goodfella ($17), had enjoyed a similar preparation to that of his 2014 Magic Millions 2YO Classic winner Unencumbered (Testa Rossa).

A winner two starts ago at Canterbury with Saturday’s jockey Brenton Avdulla in the saddle, Goodfella drew barrier 14.

The experienced colt was runner up to Ours To Keep in the B J McLachlan Stakes on this most recent start.

“I think the barrier is pretty good for him as he will probably be midfield or just behind, he is sixth up and has a similar profile to Unencumbered coming into the race,” Baker told ANZ Bloodstock News.

“He looks magnificent and has done really well and if they go really fast in the race, that will help him as he will be the strongest at the finish.”

Goodfella is one of three two-year-olds by the Arrowfield Stud-based sire Snitzel in the race with last year’s sale topper Chauffeur (barrier 12) and Saxton Rock (barrier 15) the other two while Invader (barrier 9) is the first emergency.

Snitzel has over 50 lots catalogued to sell this week including a filly out of Mimi Lebrock (Show A Heart) who won the Magic Millions 2YO Classic in 2007.

Winning Rupert Draws Barrier Six In Magic Millions 3YO Guineas

Short-priced Magic Millions Guineas (RL, 1400m) favourite Winning Rupert (Written Tycoon) has pleased trainer Bjorn Baker with his final gallop yesterday and his confidence was boosted after the barrier draw.

The unbeaten three-year-old colt drew barrier six in the field of 16

plus five emergencies, while the second favourite, dual Group One winner Global Glamour (Star Witness), drew barrier 20.

Baker told ANZ Bloodstock News regular jockey Jeff Lloyd, who has won all five starts on Winning Rupert, partnered the colt in yesterday’s gallop.

“It’s a really good barrier for him and he’s in great order,” Baker said.“Jeff was very happy with his work and he went better (than he has

before in the gallop).”A $67,500 purchase at the Magic Millions Gold Coast March Yearling

Sale, Winning Rupert has led in all three wins in Brisbane this preparation, but Baker said the colt would not necessarily lead on Saturday if rival jockeys tried to attack him early.

“He’s not a lead at all costs horse, it is just that he has so much natural speed it is hard to see anything taking him on, but if they do he can sit off them,” he said.

Baker was also not perturbed by the fact Winning Rupert was yet to run over 1400 metres despite the amount of brilliance he has shown in his five victories.

“I guess the big concern was first up 1200 metres at Eagle Farm and if he can do that then the 1400 metres fourth up at the Gold Coast,” he said.

“The question mark in my mind is that he has not done too much at all on wet tracks, so if the rain did come it would be a little bit of a question mark.

“The one time he trialled on a wet track he was not asked for an effort, so I know as much as anyone else in terms of a wet track.”

Co-trainer Gai Waterhouse remains confident Global Glamour (Star Witness) can upset Winning Rupert in the Magic Millions 3YO Guineas despite the prospect of jumping from the outside barrier in the field of 16.

Global Glamour, who won the Flight Stakes (Gr 1, 1600m) and the Thousand Guineas (Gr 1, 1600m) during the spring, galloped at Doomben yesterday.

A $65,000 purchase by James Bester at the 2015 Magic Millions Gold Coast Yearling Sale, won her only start as a two-year-old at Kembla Grange by six and a quarter lengths.

At three, the Star Witness (Starcraft) filly has excelled with two Group One victories and an unlucky ninth first up in the Nudgee Quality (Listed, 1200m) at Eagle Farm on 31 December.

She was ridden by Tye Angland on that occasion, who was held up for the entire straight and had to go to the line unextended, but Tim Clark takes over on Saturday.

“The draw is not a drawback. It will suit Global Glamour. She’ll be one of the last to load.” Waterhouse said to ANZ Bloodstock News yesterday.

“She worked beautifully this morning (Tuesday) and i’m much more confident going into the race. I’m really happy with her.”

Co-trainers Peter and Paul Snowden scratched Niccolance (Nicconi) yesterday after he drew barrier 21.

Australia

Lucky Hussler In Good FormDual Group One winner Lucky Hussler (Husson) is reportedly in good shape as he prepares to defend his Magic Millions Cup (RL, 1400m) crown at the Gold Coast on Saturday. The Darren Weir-trained seven-year-old tuned up for the $1,000,000 race when he joined stablemates Stratum Star (Stratum) and Kenjorwood (Snippetson) in a barrier trial over 970 metres at Terang yesterday morning. “I reckon he’s fit, he’s well weighted, he won it last year off a similar break, every bit of work he has done has pleased us,” Weir’s Warrnambool foreman Jarrod McLean told Racing.com. “In the past three weeks Weiry’s (Darren, trainer) really put the screws in him and

cranked him up, so it definitely won’t be fitness that beats him on Saturday.”

Murt The Flirt Pleases In Gallop Now that Murt The Flirt (Murtajill) is booked on a flight to the Gold Coast, trainer Brendan McCarthy will have to wait and see if the five-year-old makes it into the final field of 16 for Saturday’s Magic Millions Sprint (1200m). The trainer has also accepted for the Magic Millions Cup, a race he finished fourth in 12 months ago, in case the gelding does not make the field. Murt The Flirt, who pleased connections in a gallop yesterday morning, is currently 29th in the ballot order for the Sprint. “We’ve accepted with him and we’re all ready to go but we’ve just got to get up there and get a run,” McCarthy told Racing.com. “He’s

entered for both the 1400 metre race and the 1200 metre race but after he missed a run last Saturday he’ll run over 1200 metres ideally.”

Loyalty Man Dual Acceptor Trainer Mike Moroney has accepted with Loyalty Man (Fastnet Rock) for Saturday’s Magic Millions Cup at the Gold Coast, but if the four-year-old gelding does not make the final field of 16, for which he is currently 19th in the ballot, he will run in the Marouba Mile (1600m) at Randwick instead. “We'll be paying up in both places," Moroney said. "If he makes the Magic Millions, all going well we'll run, but he's also in the mile at Randwick so we'll be paying up in both places." Loyalty Man won his last start over 1550 metres at Canterbury on 31 December, having won the Wodonga Cup (1590m) in November.

Honesty Prevails Wins TrialWidden Stakes (Gr 3, 1100m) winner Honesty Prevails (Redoute’s Choice) has won her first barrier trial after her spring campaign was abandoned due to knee issues. The Rick Worthington-trained three-year-old won heat ten over 805 metres at Warwick Farm by one and a half lengths, leading all the way for jockey Jay Ford. Honesty Prevails finished tenth in the Furious Stakes (Gr 2, 1200m) at her only start during the spring before Worthington elected to spell her.

Quiet Barrier Trial For Omei SwordGroup One placegetter Omei Sword (High Chaparral) was yesterday given a quiet time in a barrier trial at Warwick Farm as she gradually builds towards her main autumn target. The Chris Waller-trained filly, who won the Silver Shadow Stakes (Gr 2, 1200m) in August, settled back in the field for jockey Hugh Bowman and was not asked for an effort in heat ten over 800 metres.

T J Smith Aim For Spieth Trainer Bryce Heys has revealed that Spieth (Thorn Park) will have his long term aim as the T J Smith Stakes (Gr 1, 1200m) at Randwick on 1 April, as the trainer prepares the entire for his autumn campaign. The four-year-old took out the City Tattersalls Lightning Handicap (Listed, 1100m) first up in October before running a narrow second to Malaguerra (Magnus) in the Darley Classic (registered as VRC Stakes) (Gr 1, 1200m) at Flemington in November. “He had a month off and is in the preliminary stages of his fast work now. We’d like to trial him at the end of the month,” said Heys. “He’ll run in the Lightning and depending on what he did in the Lightning, the Newmarket, and if he proved himself in those two runs and is good enough to compete with the best of them, then we’d love to run him in the T J Smith.” Seven For Gosford Cup The Villiers Stakes (Gr 2, 1600m) winner Sense Of Occasion (Street Sense) heads seven nominations for Friday’s Gosford Gold Cup (Listed, 2100m). The Kris Lees-trained Sense Of Occasion will be joined on the start line by the winner of the ATC Cup (Listed, 2000m) Malice (Teofilo) for trainer John O’Shea, while trainer Gerald Ryan has also accepted with Red Excitement (Excites), who was last seen

taking out the Summer Cup (Gr 3, 2000m) at Randwick on Boxing Day. Trainer Chris Waller has accepted with Loophole (Lonhro) and Index Linked (Dansili), with the field completed by Foreign Prince (High Chaparral) and Listed winner Destiny’s Kiss (Power Of Destiny).

Oliver On Sense Of Occasion Jockey Damien Oliver will partner Villiers Stakes winner Sense Of Occasion in Friday’s Gosford Gold Cup with rider Ben Melham, who rode the gelding to victory in the Group Two, unavailable. “A number of jockeys have commitments at the big Magic Millions meeting at the Gold Coast on Saturday, and aren’t keen to ride at Gosford the previous afternoon,” said Lees. “I’m pleased to get Damien to come to Gosford. I will most likely have three runners at the meeting and he will ride all of them.”

Payna To Partner Foreign Prince Meanwhile, apprentice jockey Deanne Panya is booked to ride Foreign Prince for trainer David Payne in Friday’s Gosford Gold Cup. Foreign Prince was most recently seen running second behind Red Excitement, who he will face again on Friday, in the Summer Cup at Randwick on Boxing Day and Payne believes the six-year-old gelding has improved since that run. “It was a good run," Payne said. "The winner was a little bit strong for him but I would say that he would have improved out of the race. It's a tough field but he'll be competitive. He's going in nice and well so expect a good run from him." Click here to view the weights for Gosford on Friday.

Zupacharged Chasing First Stakes SuccessThe Kylie Vella-trained Zupacharged (Zupaone) will look to secure his first stakes win when he lines up in Saturday’s Chester Manifold Stakes (Listed, 1400m) at Flemington. The seven-year-old gelding, who was most recently seen running third in the Fiesta Star Handicap (1100m) at Flemington last month, finished third in the race 12 months and Vella hopes he can go two places better this year. "The only worry I have is that he's going into the 1400 metres with only one run under his belt," Vella said. "Not that he's not fit enough, he's just a horse that tends to over-race so we've tried to

give him plenty of work so that he's not too fresh for the 1400 metres."

Barthelona To Resume Talented colt Barthelona (Zoffany) will resume over 1100 metres at Flemington on Saturday, having not been seen since finishing tenth in the Blue Sapphire Stakes (Gr 3, 1200m) at Caulfield in October. The three-year-old colt, who was unbeaten in all three career starts prior to his run in the Group Three, won a barrier trial at Flemington last week and trainer Mike Moroney said he is using Saturday’s race as a prep run for the $250,000 Inglis Dash (1100m) at Flemington on 28 January. "We wanted to give him a run beforehand but he's forward enough to run well," Moroney said. "He's got his share of weight for a horse who's not overly big, but he is a stronger horse now."

Blinkers Off Lady Selkirk Warrnambool trainer Matthew Williams has taken the blinkers off consistent mare Lady Selkirk (Von Costa De Hero) in a bid to break through for her first win of the campaign. A winner of four of her 13 starts, Lady Selkirk has had three starts back from a spell for one third placing. She lines up over 1600 metres today at the Sandown Hillside track and will instead race in winkers. “I’ve taken the blinkers off her because she just wanted to over-race with them last start,” Williams said. “All last preparation she raced with winkers on and was performing well so we thought we’d go back to that, get her to switch off, settle, and hopefully she’ll finish off like she used to.”

Love Days Returns Tomorrow The lightly raced mare Love Days (Bel Esprit) will resume in a Benchmark 70 (1100m) at Geelong tomorrow with trainer Clinton McDonald hoping the filly can win to secure a start in the Victoria Sprint Final (1200m) at Moonee Valley on 17 February. The four-year-old mare has not been seen since finishing fourth at Morphettville last June. “Last campaign we felt she didn’t come up as well as we expected so we tipped her out and she’s come back bigger, stronger and benefited from the break,” McDonald’s stable foreman Zach I'Anson told Racing.com. “We’re definitely looking for black type races with her, a trip to Tasmania could be on the cards along with other races during the autumn as well.”

Mornington Cup Aim For Esteban Trainer John Sergent will use Saturday’s Benchmark 83 (1400m) at Randwick as a stepping stone for the Mornington Cup (Listed, 2400m) on 25 March for talented stayer Esteban (Encosta De Lago) in the hope he can win the Listed race to gain automatic entry to the Caulfield Cup (Gr 1, 2400m), with the Melbourne Cup (Gr 1, 3200m) also on the four-year-old’s long term agenda. "I'm expecting a nice run without thinking he's a winning chance. He should be hitting the line strongly," Sargent said. "I think it'll be a bit short for him but when he gets up to a mile he'll be starting to get very competitive. He's not a grinding stayer. I've had a lot of those but he's more a horse that you'd think would be a weight-for-age horse in time.”

Takedown Out Of Quarantine Winterbottom Stakes (Gr 1, 1200m) winner Takedown (Stratum) has arrived at part-owner Antony Thompson’s Widden Stud for a spell after leaving quarantine. The Gary Moore-trained four-year-old contested the Hong Kong Sprint (Gr 1, 1200m) at Sha Tin last December, finishing sixth for Tim Clark. After a spell, Takedown is expected to target the Queensland Winter Carnival. Manikato Stakes (Gr 1, 1200m) winner Rebel Dane (California Dane), who also ran in the Hong Kong Sprint, has also left quarantine and is being aimed at the T J Smith Stakes (Gr 1, 1200m) at Randwick.

Wagga Transferred To Riverside Track The race meeting at Wagga on 26 January has been moved from the course proper to the Riverside track due to ongoing issues with the surface on the course proper. A race meeting on Monday was also moved from the main track to the inside circuit to allow the grass cover to improve.

Vale Graeme Spackman Respected Goulburn trainer Graeme Spackman died yesterday aged 73 after a short battle with cancer. Spackman enjoyed a lot of success in southern NSW and won back-to-back Snake Gully Cups (1400m) at Gundagai with Via Facile (Street Cry) in 2013 and 2014. Former jockey Benny Vassallo credits Spackman

with launching his career. “I rode my first four winners for him and had one of my greatest thrills in the saddle winning the Snake Gully Cup on Via Facile,” he said.

Turn Me Loose Wins Trial Multiple Group One winner Turn Me Loose (Iffraaj) is on track for another Melbourne preparation after a barrier trial victory at Cambridge yesterday. Trained by Murray Baker and Andrew Forsman, Turn Me Loose won the 935 metre heat ahead of another Group One winner in Xtravagant (Pentire). “We had to back off her after she jarred up at Te Rapa,” Forsman said. “We haven’t got any immediate plans for her, we’ll just be looking to get more black type.”

Mile Unlikely For Start Wondering Railway Stakes (Gr 1, 1200m) winner Start Wondering (Eighth Wonder) is set to bypass the Thorndon Mile (Gr 1, 1600m) and instead target the Telegraph Handicap (Gr 1, 1200m) at Trentham on 21 January. Co-trainer JJ Rayner said: “I don’t think he will be running in both.” Start Wondering is more likely to be aimed towards the NZ$200,000 Haunui Farm WFA Classic (Gr 1, 1400m) at Otaki on 25 February following his Trentham run.

Alinko Prince Comes Through Run Well Talented stayer Alinko Prince (Alamosa) has come through last Saturday’s Marton Cup (Listed, 2200m) victory in good shape and is in peak condition ahead of his tilt in the Wellington Cup (Gr 3, 3200m) at Trentham on Saturday week, according to trainer Fraser Auret. “He’s a box of birds and he really has pulled up tremendously well,” said Auret. “He’s going to appreciate the two miles and it’s just a matter of keeping him in cotton wool until then.”

Gore Guineas Next For What Choux Want The Andrew Carston-trained What Choux Want (Jimmy Choux) will attempt to back up her recent success at Waikouaiti on New Year’s Day in Saturday week’s Gore Guineas (Listed, 1335m). “It was a relief more than anything, we expected her to run very well and it had been 15 months since she last won a race so we can

go to the Gore Guineas with more confidence,” Carston said. What Choux Want finished third in the Matamata Breeders’ Stakes (Gr 2, 1200m) last season and has also placed at Listed level.

Karaka Millions For Princess RihannaPrincess Rihanna (Showcasing), a debut winner at Otaki, is being aimed at the Karaka Million (RL, 1200m) at Ellerslie. The Lance O’Sullivan and Andrew Scott-trained filly missed the break in the Eclipse Stakes (Gr 3, 1200m) at Ellerslie on New Year’s Day before running home strong to finish fourth. “Getting back at Ellerslie wasn’t to plan, but she finished off really well,” Scott said. “Although in saying that the winner did come from behind her, but we were still very pleased with our horse’s performance.”

New Zealand Chinese Jockey Club To Be LaunchedA group of private investors have established the New Zealand Chinese Jockey Club that will help to cater for the high level of interest in racehorse ownership by the Chinese, both in New Zealand and internationally, it was announced yesterday. Headed by Joshua Zong, a prominent Chinese business owner and property developer based in Auckland, the club will be officially launched on the eve of New Zealand Bloodstock's National Yearling Sales Series at a function to be held at the Karaka Million Twilight Meeting on 29 January at Ellerslie. "Having purchased a horse at the recent Ready to Run Sale, I now look forward to helping make the dream of owning a racehorse a reality for other Chinese based both here in New Zealand and in China," said Zong.

Beauty Only On Track For Stewards’ Cup The Tony Cruz-trained Beauty Only (Holy Roman Emperor) had his first barrier trial yesterday since landing the Hong Kong Mile (Gr 1, 1600m) in December as he is prepared for a tilt in the Stewards’ Cup (Gr 1, 1600m) at Sha Tin on 30 January. The six-year-old was given an easy time by Zac Purton in the 1200 metre trial, eventually finishing sixth, eleven and quarter lengths behind winner Pablosky (Mastercraftsman). “It was a pretty solidly run

Moore Aiming To Add to Hand In Classic Mile Trainer John Moore will be hoping that the Australian-bred People’s Knight (Exceed And Excel) can run well in a Class Two race over 1650 metres at Happy Valley tonight as he prepares the four-year-old for a tilt in the Hong Kong Classic Mile (HK Gr 1, 1600m) at Sha Tin on 22 January. “I think he’ll run very well,” said jockey Sam Clipperton. “The horse seems to be holding his form, he’s going super in the mornings and working very nicely, he’s a horse with a lot of ability.” Moore was responsible for eight entries in Hong Kong Classic Mile, including the top four highest rated horses, Rapper Dragon (Street Boss), Beauty Generation (Road To Rock), Eagle Way (More Than Ready) and Helene Charisma (Air Chief Marshal). Kempton To CloseKempton Park racecourse is to be sold for housing as part of a Jockey Club plan to spend at least £500,000,000 on British racing over the next ten years, with the course set to close by 2021. As a result the Jockey Club plans to build a new floodlit all-weather course, should Kempton receive approval for redevelopment, with a new site at The Links in Newmarket. Sandown racecourse will also receive a major investment as part of the plans and Kempton’s flagship jumps race, the King George VI Chase (Gr 1, 3m), will be run there. "A new purpose-built all-weather course on The Links in Newmarket to replace that at Kempton Park would be ideal for the thousands of horses trained at the Home of Racing and beyond, as well as shortening the working day for racing's people there,” said the Jockey Club’s senior steward Roger Weatherby.

First For CommissionerThe WinStar Farm-based stallion Commissioner,

the last son of A P Indy (Seattle Slew) to retire to stud, sired his first foal on the ground when a filly foal was born last Thursday at Taylor Made Farm in Kentucky. The filly foal is out of the Afleet Alex (Northern Afleet) mare She’s a Fleet, a half-sister to Grade One winner Mona De Momma (Speightstown). Commissioner won three stakes races in his career, including the Hawthorne Gold Cup (Gr 2, 10f), and also finished a narrow second behind Tonalist (Tapit) in the 2014 Belmont Stakes (Gr 1, 12f).

Siren Serenade Sells For US$1,025,000 at Keeneland On Monday A daughter of Unbridled’s Song

(Unbridled), Siren Serenade, topped the first session of the Keeneland January Horses Of All

Aged Sale after Reiley McDonald, purchasing on behalf of the Don Alberto Corporation, went to US$1,025,000 to secure the mare.

Catalogued as Lot 145 and offered as part of the Hill ‘N’ Dale Sales Agency draft, the 11-year-old was the only mare at the catalogued in foal to leading sire Tapit (Pulpit). The mare has already produced five foals, including the Santa Anita Oaks (Gr 1, 12f) runner-up Luminance (Tale Of The Cat).

Siren Serenade is out of the multiple Grade One-winner Versailles Treaty (Danzig), making her a half-sister to the Grade One winner George Vancouver (Henrythenavigator) and three quarters sister to the Grade Two winner Saarland (Unbridled).

“She’s a lovely individual who produces really good foals,” Hill ‘n’ Dale’s John Sikura said. “She is in foal to Tapit, so you would have to think she has the requirements that breeders are looking for. This was the year to either sell her or (keep) her. There is reason to own her (but) the reason to sell her is to provide cash to pursue other opportunities. We are happy with the price. She’s a million-dollar mare and that is what she made.”

“She is a big strong mare; it’s a lovely family,” said McDonald. “I bought her for Don Alberto Corporation, and they already own part of the family. Don Alberto is playing at the highest end of the game, so she was just the perfect mare for them. She’s a very nice mare, a graded stakes producer in foal to the very best sire in the country.”

Tapit was in demand again later on in the evening, when the Grade Three-winning mare Delightful Joy (Tapit) realised US$700,000 after selling to Frances Relihan, who signed the ticket on behalf of Oussama Aboughazale’s International Equities Holdings.

Catalogued as Lot 309, Delightful Joy won the Monmouth Oaks (Gr 3, 12f) in 2015 and was placed second in the Turnback The Alarm Handicap (Gr 3, 12f) at Belmont on her last start.

The Denali Stud consigned mare is out of the Grade Three winner and Grade One placed mare Graeme Six (Graeme Hall) and is a half-sister to the Grade Three winner Cali Star (Street Cry).

“She is really pretty and pretty means a lot,” Craig Bandoroff of Denali said. “She had the

Relihan said: “She is a just a really nice filly, great range, great scope. She was a good race filly and she is from a really strong family.”

The mare was one of seven Lots bought by International Equities Holdings helping them finish the day as the sale's leading buyer, for a total spend of US$1,171,000.

Meanwhile, Grosse Pointe Anne (Distorted Humor) was snapped up by Alistar Roden Bloodstock, after he bought the mare for US$460,000 from the Taylor Made Sales Agency draft.

The mare, catalogued as Lot 350, was

offered in foal to Pioneerof The Nile (Empire Maker) and is out of the winning mare Playa Maya (Arch), making her a half-sister to dual Grade One winner and leading sire Uncle Mo (Indian Charlie).

“She’s a beautiful mare, she’s a black-type horse and she is in foal to a serious horse, Pioneerof the Nile,” Roden said.

Taylor Made Sales Agency, agent, led all consignors on Monday with sales of US$3,652,500 for 36 horses, including six of the ten highest-priced horses of the day.

Divalarious, a nine-year-old daughter of Distorted Humor (Forty Niner) in foal to 2015 Triple Crown winner American Pharoah (Pioneerof The Nile), was purchased for US$380,000 by White Birch Farm from the Taylor Made Sales Agency draft.

On Monday, the first session of the Keeneland January Horses Of All Aged Sale saw 163 horses sell for US$10,514,000, 22.87 per cent below last year’s opening session when 182 horses grossed US$13,631,200. The average of US$64,503 decreased 13.88 per cent from US$74,897 in 2016, while the median of US$35,000 was down 11.39 per cent from US$39,500 last year.

South African Horse of the Year Legal Eagle (Greys Inn) won his second successive Queen’s Plate (Gr 1, 1600m) at Kenilworth last Saturday,

his fifth Group One victory in three seasons of racing.

This was the five-year-old gelding’s ninth win in 15 starts in which he has also placed four times so only twice has he missed a place.

Legal Eagle faced a top class field last Saturday, defeating runner up Captain America (Captain Al) by two and a quarter lengths with Sail South (Sail From Seattle) in third.

As a three-year-old Legal Eagle had emulated his sire Greys Inn (Zabeel) by winning the South African Derby (Gr 1, 2450m).

From an Australasian viewpoint it is exciting to find that Legal Eagle has pedigree links to our part of the world through his sire Greys Inn, a South African champion foaled in the United States but conceived in New Zealand from a mating between the great sire Zabeel (Sir Tristram) and the Australian mare Great Verdict (Christmas Tree), a daughter of renowned producer Summoned (Crowned Prince), dam of five stakes winners, most notable of them the sires Zeditave (The Judge) and Alannon (Noalcoholic).

Zeditave, of the Blue Diamond Stakes (Gr 1, 1200m) as a two-year-old, went on to win four more Group One sprints before becoming a highly successful sire and broodmare sire at Newhaven Park Stud in NSW while Alannon, who died young, is best remembered as the sire of Falvelon, a top sprinter and sire to date of ten stakes winners.

Greys Inn was South Africa’s champion three-year-old of 2003/04, winning the South African Derby and the coveted Durban July Handicap (Gr 1, 2200m). Some readers may recall he campaigned briefly but unsuccessfully in Melbourne in the spring of 2005 when down the track behind champion Makybe Diva (Desert King) in both the Cox Plate (Gr 1, 2040m) and the Melbourne Cup (Gr 1, 3200m).

At stud in South Africa Greys Inn has a total

of six stakes winners and while Legal Eagle is his standout runner he has two other Group One winners, South African Derby winner Royal Bencher and King Of Pain.

Legal Eagle is far the best of two winners produced by his stakes-placed dam Young Sensation (National Emblem), a winner of six races whose Group One-winning sire National Emblem (National Assembly) is a grandson of Danzig (Northern Dancer) and best known as the father of international performer Shea Shea.

Legal Eagle’s second dam Fair Model (Model Man) was a Group One winner in South Africa where she foaled four winners in addition to stakes-placed Young Warrior (Complete Warrior) and Young Sensation.

This is one of South Africa’s best female families over a long period and perhaps the only one to achieve international attention through the deeds of Hawaii (Utrillo) whose dam Ethane (Mehrali) is a half-sister to Entrance (Netherwood), Legal Eagle’s fourth dam.

Stakes winner Entrance is a sister to Ethylwood (Netherwood), champion two-year-old filly in South Africa, and to stakes winning sire William Penn

(Netherwood) but it was the racing and later stud successes of their half-brother Hawaii which made the thoroughbred world take notice of South African breeding back in the late 1960s.

Raced by Nijinsky’s American owner Charles Englehard, Hawaii (1964) proved himself the champion in South Africa both at two years and three years. His dominant performances encouraged Englehard to send him to race in the United States as a four-year-old where he became champion grass horse of 1969, winning a string of important races before retiring to the famous Claiborne Farm in Kentucky as the winner of 21 of his 28 career starts.

Hawaii left 35 stakes winners, among them Henbit, winner of the 1980 Derby (Gr 1, 1m4f) at Epsom, Hawaiian Sound, narrowly beaten by Shirley Heights (Mill Reef) in the same classic in 1978, and the influential producer Kilavea (out of Special, by Forli).

Legal Eagle possesses an outcross pedigree with the closest linebreeding to Northern Dancer (Nearctic) and Princequillo (Prince Rose) coming in the fifth and sixth generations and all via sons of those sires.
