GENERAL SAFETY RULES

CARBON MONOXIDEWhen an operation must be performed withthe engine running, position the motorcycleoutdoors in a well-ventilated area. Never runthe engine in an enclosed place.Use an exhaust emission extraction systemwhen working indoors.

WARNINGExhaust fumes contain carbon monoxide,a poisonous gas which, if inhaled, maycause loss of consciousness or evendeath.

WARNINGCarbon monoxide is both colorless andodorless, and cannot be detected bysmell, vision, or any other sense. Avoidinhaling exhaust fumes under anycircumstances.

GASOLINEKeep gasoline away from children. Gasolineis also poisonous. Never attempt to siphongasoline using your mouth. Never allowgasoline to come in contact with skin. If youshould accidentally spill gasoline on yourself,remove contaminated clothing immediatelyand wash the affected area with hot water andsoap. COOLANTUnder certain conditions, the ethylene glycolcontained in the engine coolant is flammable:its flame is invisible, but can still cause burns.

WARNINGAvoid spilling coolant onto hot engineparts. It may ignite and produce invisibleflames.Coolant (ethylene glycol) can cause skinirritation and is poisonous if swallowed.Coolant and coolant/water mixtures aresweet to the taste and brightly colored,they are therefore highly attractive to petsand children. Take extra precautions tokeep new and used coolant out of reach ofchildren and animals.

RIGIN OF THE EMISSIONS

AMPERING WARNINGampering with the noise control system isrohibited. Federal law prohibits the followingcts or causing thereof:

) The removal or rendering inoperative byany person other than for purposes ofmaintenance, repair, or replacement, ofany device or element of designincorporated into any new vehicle for thepurpose of noise control prior to its sale ordelivery to the ultimate purchaser or whileit is in use, or

) The use of the vehicle after such device orelement of design has been removed orrendered inoperative by any person.

The California Air Resources Board andaprilia s.p.a. (hereinafter “aprilia”) arepleased to explain the emission controlsystem warranty on your 1999 and latermotorcycle. In Cali fornia new motorvehicles must be designed, built andequipped to meet the State’s stringentantismog standards. aprilia must warrantthe emission control system on yourmotorcycle for the periods of time listedbelow provided there has been no abuse,neglect or improper maintenance of yourmotorcycle.Your emission control system may includeparts such as the carburetor or fuelinjection system, the ignition system,catalytic converter and engine computer.Also included may be hoses, belts,connectors and other emission-relatedassemblies.

Where a warrantable condition exists,aprilia will repair your motorcycle at no costto you, including diagnosis, parts andlabor.

MANUFACTURER’S EMISSIONS SYSTEM WARRANTY COVERAGEClass I motorcycles (50 – 169 cm3): for aperiod of use of five (5) years or 12,000kilometers (7,456 miles), whichever occursfirst.

These warranted parts are:carburetor and internal parts; intakemanifold; fuel tank; fuel injection system;spark advance mechanism; crankcasebreather; air cutoff valves; fuel tank capfor evaporative emission controlledvehicles; oil filler cap; pressure controlvalve; fuel/vapor separator; canister;igniters; breaker governors; ignitioncoils; ignition wires; ignition points;condensers, and spark plugs if failureoccurs prior to the first scheduledreplacement; and hoses, clamps, fittingsand tubing used directly in these parts.Since emission related parts may varyfrom model to model, certain modelsmay not contain all of these parts andcertain models may contain functionallyequivalent parts.

BASIC SAFETY RULESThe instructions given below cover normaloperation of your vehicle and must becarefully observed. By following theserules you will enhance your own safety andthe safety of those around you. You willalso maximize the life and utility of yourvehicle.

Two-wheeled vehicles obviously do notprovide some of the protection provided byautomobiles, therefore it is essential thatyou wear appropriate protective clothing. Inparticular, never operate your vehiclewithout wearing your helmet, gloves, eyeprotection, a heavy jacket, sturdy footwear,and sturdy full length pants. However, do not assume that even thebest clothing and helmet will protect you inthe event of an upset or a crash withanother vehicle. At best, this gear providessome protect ion f rom scrapes andscratches, but very little, if any, impactprotection.

Be sure that you meet all the requirementsprescribed by local law, including driver’slicense, minimum age, training, insurance,taxes, vehicle registration, license plate,etc.

When you first receive your vehicle,practice by riding in areas where there islittle traffic. Do not attempt to ride in heavytraffic until you are thoroughly experiencedand riding your vehicle has becomesecond nature to you.

Although this vehicle is legal for use onfreeways and expressways, it is advisableto not ride on these high-speed highwaysuntil you are thoroughly familiar with yourvehicle, and have attained a high degree ofskill in its operation.

A new vehicle must be carefully broken in,see page 74 (RUNNING-IN).

Before starting the engine, make sure thatthe brakes, clutch, transmission andthrottle controls function properly and thatthe fuel and oil supply is adequate.

The exhaust system, brakes, and someother parts of the vehicle become very hotduring operation. Do not touch any of theseparts.Some medicines or drugs, whether illegalor prescription, and alcohol significantlyincrease the risk of accidents. Do not ridewhile you are under the influence ofa lcoho l o r d rugs , be they i l l i c i t o rprescription.

Never shift gear without using the clutch, ifthe vehicle is so equipped. Do not operatethe shif t lever or the other controlssuddenly or abruptly. Such misuse candamage the internal components of thevehicle and consequently cause seizure,loss of control, accidents and seriousinjuries or even death.Remain in the seat when you are riding. Donot stand up or attempt to stretch while youare riding your vehicle. If you need to rest,pull over to the side of the road when it canbe safely done.


Observe all rules of the road. Particularlypay attention to all warning, regulatory andinformational signs.

Avoid showing off (i.e., popping wheelies).Especially observe speed limits, andremember that road conditions changewi th the weather and wet and i cypavements are particularly dangerous forvehicles, especially if you are riding toofast. Remember that automobile drivershave a hard time seeing two-wheeledvehicles, so always give the automobilethe right of way, even if it is legally yours.Before changing lanes, look over yourshoulder to make sure that the way isclear. Do not rely exclusively on therearview mirror: you may miscalculate thedistance and speed of a vehicle, or youmay even not see it at all.

Avoid obstacles that could damage thevehicle or make you lose control.

Do not tailgate, do not attempt to increaseyour gas mileage by following in the slipstream of cars or trucks in front of you.

In case of accident motorcycles, scootersand mopeds do not provide the samedegree o f p ro tec t ion ensured byautomobiles. The legs, in particular, areexposed to the risk of being injured.However, the additional installation of legguards may actually increase the risk ofinjuries and their seriousness in case ofaccident.

Do not install leg guards available on thespare parts and accessories market. Non-compliance with these instructions mayresult in serious injuries or even death.

It is very important to your safety that yougive full attention to the riding task. If you must consult a map, pullover when it can be done safely.

Use only the vehicle’s specific fuels andlubricants indicated in the “LUBRICANTCHART”; check the oil, fuel and coolantlevels regularly.

If the throttle sticks open, it may cause acollision with another vehicle, or an upset.

If the throttle sticks, kill the engine with theengine stop switch located on the righthandlebar.

Do not attempt to restart the engine untilthe throttle has been repaired and worksperfectly. Failure to observe this warningcan lead to a runaway resulting in seriousinjuries or even death.

Your vehicle is equipped with a doublecable throttle. One cable opens the throttlewhen you rotate the throttle grip towardsyou; the other closes the throttle when yourotate the gr ip away from you. I t isessential, when you release the throttlegrip, that it automatically return to the idleposition.This double cable arrangement enhancessafety by providing for positive closing ofthe throttle.

In the event of a throttle stickingemergency, always kill the engine usingthe engine stop switch located near thethrottle grip on the right handlebar. Neveruse your vehicle if the throttle does notautomatically fully return to the idleposition when the throttle grip isreleased. Contact your Local apriliaDealer for repairs. Failure to observe thiswarning can lead to a serious accidentand result in injury or even death.

Do not attempt to modify the position,angle or color of your license plate. Have your vehicle repaired only withoriginal parts, and use only original apriliaor aprilia approved accessories. The useof aftermarket accessories and parts canseriously compromise the safety of yourvehicle as well as its performance andserviceability. Tampering with the emissions or noisecontrol systems on your vehicle is againstthe law, and can be punished by largefines.In some jurisdictions, it can even lead tothe confiscation of your vehicle.

If you must ride your vehicle in rainyweather, or on loose surfaces, rememberthat traction is greatly reduced. Underthese conditions, all handling of the vehiclemust be done gradually and smoothly.Sudden acceleration, braking or turningmay make you lose control of your vehicle.When traction is reduced, accelerate andslow using your vehicle’s engine brakinginsofar as possible. Inevitably, the driver will look right at you,and yet swear that they did not see youbefore they turned directly into your path.Ride alert!Wear protective clothing, preferably in lightand/or reflecting colors. In this way you willmake yourself more visible to the otherdrivers, thus notably reducing the risk ofbeing knocked down, and you will be moreprotected in case of fall.Always wear your crash helmet. Manyaccidents are fatal because of injuries tothe head.This clothing should be very tight-fittingand fastened at the wrists and ankles.Strings, belts and ties should not behanging loose; prevent these and otherobjects from interfering with driving bygetting entangled with moving parts ordriving mechanisms.


Always observe posted and statutoryspeed limits, but do not assume that youcan ride as fast as the speed limit under allroad conditions. Slowing down a little cangreatly increase your safety under all roadconditions.

Do not ride your vehicle off road.Do not tamper with the muffler system orthe emissions control system of yourvehicle. This is not only bad for theenvironment, but it can subject you toserious penalties.

CLOTHINGBefore riding your vehicle, make sure thatyour riding gear is in good condition. To beeffective, your helmet must fit properly, andthe visor or other eye protection must beclean.

Both research and experience have shownthat drivers of other vehicles often do notsee vehicles or riders. In order to makeyourself more conspicuous to thesedrivers, wear bright reflective clothing,such as a reflective vest, or clothing withreflective sections sewn into the jacket,pants and gloves. Be particularly aware ofapproaching automobiles and trucks thatmight be trying to turn left in front of you.Many vehicle accidents are caused by anopposing automobile driver making a leftturn without warning in front of the vehicle.

WARNINGIf the throttle sticks open, it may causea collision with another vehicle, or anupset.

If the throttle sticks, kill the engine withthe engine stop switch located on theright handlebar.Do not attempt to restart the engineuntil the throttle has been repaired andworks perfectly.

Failure to observe this warning can leadto a runaway resulting in seriousinjuries or even death.

Your vehicle is equipped with a doublecable throttle. One cable opens the throttlewhen you rotate the throttle grip towardsyou; the other closes the throttle when yourotate the gr ip away from you. I t isessential, when you release the throttlegrip, that it automatically return to the idleposition. This double cable arrangementenhances safety by providing for positiveclosing of the throttle.

WARNINGIn the event of a throttle stickingemergency, always kill the engine usingthe engine stop switch located near thethrottle grip on the right handlebar.Never use your vehicle if the throttledoes not automatically fully return tothe idle position when the throttle gripis released. FUEL

WARNINGGasoline is extremely flammable and insome conditions can become explosive.Therefore, it is necessary to refuel andcarry out maintenance operationsinvolving the fuel system in a well-ventilated area with the engine off. Do not refuel or perform anymaintenance on the fuel system with theengine running. Do not smoke while refueling or nearfuel vapors. Never allow any portion of the fuelsystem to come in contact with openflames, sparks or other heat sources. Becareful to avoid spilling fuel when youare refueling. Spilled fuel could ignitewhen it comes in contact with hot engineor exhaust system surfaces. If youaccidentally spill some fuel, make surethat i t is wiped up or completelyevaporated before starting the vehicle. Since gasoline expands in the fuel tankwhen the vehicle is sitting in the opensun, never fill the tank completely to therim. Leave at least one inch of expansionspace. Avoid any contact of the fuel with yourskin, and avoid inhalation of fuel vapors.Never attempt to siphon fuel from onecontainer to another using your mouthas suction for a siphon hose.

cylinder push rod (6) and run it as fartowards the master cylinder as it will goon the threads of the push rod.

u Screw the master cylinder push rod (6)out of the clevis until it just contacts themaster cylinder piston.

u Then, screw the push rod into the clevisto obtain a minimum clearance of 0.02 –0.04 in (0.5 – 1 mm) between the mastercyl inder push rod and the mastercylinder piston.

u Lock the push rod in position with thelock nut (5).

Pressure measurement must always becarried out when the tires are cold, aswhen the tires are warm, pressure willincrease, and result in incorrectreadings.

If the tire is overinflated (pressure is toohigh) , the resu l t wi l l be anuncomfortably harsh ride, and ridingcomfort will be compromised. Also,road holding, especially during turnsand in wet conditions, will likewise becompromised.

If the tire is underinflated (pressure istoo low), the tire may slip on the rimwith consequent loss of control. Again,road hold ing and handl ingcharacteristics will be degraded, andbrake performance will be reduced.

When the tire is worn to a point whereany tread is less than 0.12 in (3 mm)deep, the tire is worn out, and must bereplaced. Also, i f a t ire suffers apuncture that is larger than 0.20 in (5mm) in its longest dimension, the tiremust not be repaired, but should bereplaced.

After a tire is repaired, balance thewheels. Use only tires that are listed inthe technica l data , page 137(TECHNICAL DATA).

Install only tires that are listed in thetechnical data, page 137 (TECHNICALDATA), or that have been specificallyapproved by aprilia for this vehicle.

AUTOMATIC LIGHTS ONYour vehicle is equipped with lights that comeon automatically as soon as the ignition switch(2) is turned to “ ” (ON) (low-beam lights“ ” or high-beam lights “ ”) orposition “ ” (PARKING) (only parking lights“ ”).For this reason, there is no light switch on yourvehicle. GETTING ON AND OFF THE VEHICLEThe instructions below must be followedwith the maximum care in order to avoidinjury to persons and damage to propertyand to the vehicle, caused by the rider orpassenger falling from the vehicle and/orthe vehicle falling or overturning.

WARNINGRisk of falling and overturning.Proceed with care.When getting on and off the vehicle, makesure nothing can impair your movements.Also, your hands should be free (replaceany objects, such as your helmet, gloves ordangling glasses before mounting ordismounting). Always mount and dismountfrom the left side with the vehicle on theside stand.However, do not apply your full weight orthat of the passenger to the side stand.

CAUTIONThe stand has been designed tosupport the weight of the vehicle and aminimum load, without the rider and thepassenger.The purpose of placing the vehicle on theside stand before mounting is to keep thevehicle from falling or overturning. Thisdoes not mean that the side stand shouldbe used to support the weight of rider andpassenger.While getting on and off, the weight of thevehicle may make you lose balance, andthe vehicle may fall or overturn.

NOTE Any bags or objects strapped tothe rear of the vehicle can impair yourmovements while getting on and off.

When mounting or dismounting, swingyour r ight leg over the vehicle in acontrolled movement. Do not hit the rearend (tail or luggage) or you will upsetvehicle balance.

GETTING ON THE VEHICLEu Grasp the handlebar correctly and get

on the vehicle without loading yourweight onto the side stand.

Neveraccelerate abruptly or excessively whenreleasing the clutch lever in order toprevent the clutch from slipping andoverheating (slow release) or the frontwheel from lifting (wheelie) (quickrelease). u Repeat the last two operations to shift fromsecond, to third, to fourth, to fifth, to sixth.

WARNINGIf the engine oil pressure icon “ ”comes on during the normal running ofthe engine, this means that the oilsystem is not developing sufficientpressure. In this case, immediately stopthe engine and contact your Localaprilia Dealer. Failure to observe thiswarning can lead to engine seizure,upset, and serious injury or even death.

If you stop uphill, use brakes only toslow the vehicle and to keep it in place.Slipping the clutch to keep the vehiclein one place on an uphill grade will veryquickly ruin the clutch and overheat theengine.

Before entering a turn, slow down,using the brakes and the engine, to aconstant speed and then accelerateslightly through the turn. Avoid brakingat the last minute. This can cause you tolose control of your vehicle.

If the brakes are operated continuouslyon downhill grades, the discs and padswi l l overheat , reducing brak ingefficiency. Use engine compression anddownshift to retard your vehicle whilegoing downhill. Use the brakes as littleas possible to maintain a safe speed.

Never coast downhill with the engine offand/or the clutch disengaged or thetransmission in neutral.

On roads that are wet or covered withsnow, ice or mud, ride very slowly,avoiding braking or accelerating ormaneuvering quickly. Hold the handlebarsfirmly.

Failure to observe these warnings cancause an upset and result in seriousinjury or death.


CAUTIONDo not leave the ignition key on “ ”(OFF) since the cooling fans will not runregardless of the coolant temperature.This will cause the coolant temperatureto continue to rise.If, before shutting off the engine, you hearthe cooling fans functioning, stop theengine but leave the ignition key in the“ ” (ON) position. This will allow thecooling fans to draw air through theradiators, and lower the temperature. Turnthe ignition key to “ ” (OFF) only whenthe cooling fans have stopped.

CAUTIONIf the coolant temperature readout ofthe multifunction display is between115°C (239°F) and 135°C (275°F) - seepage 34 (MULTIFUNCTIONCOMPUTER), stop the vehicle and letthe engine run a t 3 ,000 rpm forapproximately two minutes to keepcoolant circulating in the system. Aftertwo minutes, set the engine kill switchto " " and check the coolant level,see page 41 (COOLANT).

WARNINGPay very close attention to any obstaclesor variations of the road surface. Unevenroads, rails, manhole covers, paintedtraffic stripes, traffic dots all becomeslippery when wet. Avoid particularlysteel plates which are sometimes usedduring road maintenance. They becomemore slippery than ice once they are wetby rain or other water source. If you mustride on such surfaces, decrease yourspeed and operate the throttle, brakesand steering very gently.

Always use the turn indicators any timeyou intend to change lanes or changedirection, and avoid sudden or abruptturning.Switch off the turn indicators as soonas you have changed direction.

Overtake and pass with care, especiallyin rainy weather when a water cloudcreated by larger vehicles reducesvisibility and the slip stream couldcause you to lose control of yourvehicle.

RUNNING-INThe internal parts of the engine andtransmission must be properly run-in toensure their long life and dependableoperation.

If possible, while breaking in your vehicle,ride on hilly roads and/or roads with manycurves so that the engine and transmissionundergo lots of speed changes. It is alsoimportant that, during the run-in period, thesuspension and brakes be treated gently toallow the mating parts to bed.

Therefore, avoid harsh braking, highspeeds or very bumpy roads during thebreak-in period.

NOTE Only after the first 900 mi (1,500km) of running-in you can expect the bestperformance from the vehicle.

During break-in, observe the followingrules:

u Do not open the throttle abruptly or fullyat low engine speed. This rule applieseven after break-in has been completed.

u During the first 60 mi (100 km), apply thebrakes with caution, avoid sudden andprolonged braking. This ensures correctbedding-in of the pads on the discs.

AIR CLEANER

CAUTIONReduce the service intervals by halfwhen the vehicle is used in rainy ordusty conditions, on rough roads or forracing.Inspect the air cleaner for clogging every6,250 mi (1,000 km) or 12 months of use.Replace the air cleaner with a new oneevery 12,500 mi (20,000 km).

The air cleaner must be inspected morefrequently, cleaned if necessary, andreplaced more frequently if the vehicle isused on dusty or wet roads.

More frequent cleaning of the air cleaner issuggested, especially if your bike is usedunder very dusty conditions.

CAUTIONThe air cleaner must not be used formore than 12,500 mi (20,000 km)regardless of how many times it hasbeen cleaned in the interval. Under verydusty or dirty conditions, it is advisableto replace the air cleaner more often.Before cleaning, it is necessary to removethe air cleaner from the vehicle.

When reassembling, before putting backthe filter case cover (3), make sure that youhave not left the cloth or other objectsinside the case. Make sure that the aircleaner is positioned correctly, in such away as to prevent non-filtered air fromentering. Premature wear of the pistonrings, pistons and cylinders is caused byan improperly installed air cleaner.

CLEANING

CAUTIONTake great care not to deform theperforated metal outside screen. It isvery fragile and can be easily damaged.Never use a screwdriver or other sharphard tool to remove the air cleaneritself.

WARNINGDuring this operation, always weargoggles which provide your eyes with360° protection.

Be very careful using compressed airjets, they can cause serious personalinjury if directed towards your body.u Grasp the air cleaner (6) vertically and

strike it repeatedly on a clean hardhorizontal surface.

u If available, clean the air cleaner (6) witha compressed air jet, directing it from theinside of the filter towards the outside.

CAUTIONIf the vehicle is used for racing, changethe engine oil every 3,125 mi (5,000 km).Change oil more frequently if the vehicleis used in dusty conditions.

CHECKING

NOTE Place the vehicle on firm and flatground.

CAUTIONThe engine oil level must be checkedwhen the engine is warm.If the check is carried out when theengine is cold, the oi l level maytemporarily lower below the “MIN” mark.

CHECKING THE SIDE STANDCarefully read page 79 (MAINTENANCE)and page 92 (CHECKING THESWITCHES).The side stand (1) has two positions:– normal or stowed (Pos. A);– extended (Pos. B).The rider must make sure that the stand issafely and completely extended, orcompletely stowed, as required.The side stand (1) must rotate around its pivotsmoothly and easily.The springs (2) provide for keeping the standin the desired position (extended or stowed).Perform the following checks:u Place the vehicle on the appropriate rear

u The springs (2) must not be damaged,worn, or rusted, and must fully and firmlystow the side stand when the weight of thevehicle is lifted off of it.

u Make sure that the stand presents noslack in either position (extended orstowed).

u Extend the stand, making sure that theaction of the springs ensures completeextension.

u Move the stand to stow it and release itwhen it has reached half its stroke tomake sure that the action of the springsis sufficient to stow it completely.

u The side stand (1) must rotate freelyaround its pivot. If necessary, lubricate thepivot, see page 141 (LUBRICANTCHART).

CHECKING THE FUNCTIONING OF THE SAFETY SWITCH ON THE SIDE STANDThe side stand (1) is equipped with a safetysystem, operated by a safety switch (3). This system prevents the motor from beingstarted while the stand is extended unless thetransmission is in neutral. It also kills theengine if the stand is extended while theengine is running, unless the transmission is

FRONT SUSPENSION

After the first 18,750 mi (30,000 km) andthen every 12,500 mi (20,000 km), check,clean and lubricate the fork oil seals. Ifnecessary, have them replaced by anaprilia dealer. The front suspension is controlled by ahydraulic fork, which is held to the steeringtube by two yokes. Each fork leg is f i t ted with suitableadjusters to modify suspension response.An upper adjuster screw (1) controlsrebound damping, whereas a loweradjuster screw (2) controls compressiondamping. A top-mounted adjuster nut (3)controls spring preload. SETTING THE FRONT FORK

CAUTIONDo not force the adjusters (1-2) beyondtheir limit stops in either direction, orthe threads may strip. Set both fork legsto the same spr ing pre load,compression and rebound dampingsettings: a vehicle whose fork legs areset to different settings will be unstable.When spring preload is increased,rebound damping should be increasedaccordingly. INSPECTING THE FRONT AND REAR SUSPENSIONS

Move the wheel around until the axlehole and the axle clamps are aligned.From the left side of the vehicle, insertthe axle (7) and push in completely.

Remove the wheel nut (2) and washer(3).

Wheel shaft clamp screws tighteningtorque setting: 15.91 ftlb (22 Nm).

Loosen the two axle clamp screws (4)(right side), using the appropriate Allenwrench.Loosen the two axle clamp screws (5)(left side), using the appropriate Allenwrench.

NOTE Observe the arrangement of theright spacer ring (6), in order to be able toreassemble it correctly.

NOTE To facilitate the extraction of theaxle (7), slightly lift the wheel.

Push the axle (7) partly out of the frontfork by tapping the threaded end with arubber hammer or wooden drift.Support the front wheel and remove theaxle (7) manually by pulling it from theleft side of the vehicle.Remove the wheel by pulling it forward.

NOTE The right spacer ring (6) remainslocated in its seat on the wheel; but if it hascome out, replace it.

Tighten the two axle clamp screws (4)(right side), using the appropriate Allenwrench.

Loosen the two axle clamp screws (5) (leftside), using the appropriate Allen wrench.Remove the support (1) from under thefront tire.Replace the left and right front brakecaliper, see page 114 (REMOVING THEFRONT BRAKE CALIPERS). Apply the front brake lever, and then pushdown on the handlebars, compressing thefork springs several times. This will align thefork tubes.Place the vehicle on the stand, see page 77(PLACING THE VEHICLE ON THESTAND).

Tighten the two axle clamp screws (5) (leftside), using the appropriate Allen wrench.

Wheel shaft clamp screws tighteningtorque setting (5): 15.91 ftlb (22 Nm).

Make sure that the followingcomponents are neither dirty nor oily: – tire; wheel; brake discs.

WARNINGAfter servicing the brakes, always checkthat they operate correctly. If the stroke ofthe lever or pedal is excessive, or if youdetect that the effectiveness of the brakesis reduced in any way, have your vehicleserviced by your Local aprilia Dealer. Place the wheel centrally on theswingarm, on the support (2).

Pull the wheel backwards, removing it fromthe swingarm from behind, carefullyremoving the disc from the brake caliper.

NOTE The left spacer ring (10) and theright spacer ring (11) remain in their seatson the wheel; collect them if they havecome out.

NOTE The torque plate (12) of the brakecaliper (13) remains installed on the rightside of the rear fork.

Proceed with care. If the final drive unit(14) is installed on the flexible couplingholder (15), do not overturn or rotate therear wheel in horizontal position on the rearsprocket side (A), since the final drive unitwould come off and fall, and this coulddamage the rear sprocket (9).

NOTE If the wheel is in the normalrunning position (vertical) or in horizontalposition with the rear sprocket facingupwards and in both cases securedagainst overturning, it is not necessary toremove the final drive unit.

NOTE Do not loosen the five nuts (16).The complete final drive unit must bewithdrawn from the flexible couplingholder.

WARNINGAn excessively loose chain may causenoise or make the chain rattle, withconsequent wear of the shoe and of thechain guide plate. Do not ride your vehiclewith an improperly adjusted chain, seepage 106 (ADJUSTMENT). To inspect thecondition of the chain, grasp the chainwhere it goes around the sprocket and tryto pull it away from the sprocket. If you canmove it more than one-eighth of an inchaway from the sprocket, the chain is wornout and the chain and both front and rearsprockets must be replaced. See yourLocal aprilia Dealer.

Move the wheel as far forward aspossible, to fit the drive chain (8) on therear sprocket (9).Fit the right (6) and left (7) chaint igh teners in the i r sea ts on theswingarm.Apply a thin film of lubricating grease,see page 141 (LUBRICANT CHART), tothe rear axle (5).Pull the rear wheel backwards until thebearing holes are lined up with the holesin the swingarm.Rotate the torque plate (12), completewith brake caliper (13), with the stop pin(17) in proper pos i t ion unt i l i t i sappropriately aligned with the holes inthe swingarm.

Fit the axle (5) completely through thewheel from the left side.

CHECKING THE PLAYTo check the play:

Stop the engine.Place the vehicle on the stand, see page 77(PLACING THE VEHICLE ON THESTAND).Shift to neutral.Check the chain play. It should be 0.98 in(25 mm) at mid-bottom span as shownabove.Move the vehicle forward or backward, orsupport the rear wheel in the air and turnthe wheel to several positions, to check thechain slack at several locations. If the slackis markedly different with the wheel indifferent positions, the chain and sprocketsmust be replaced.

WARNINGNever operate your vehicle with adamaged chain. This could cause wheelseizure which could lead to an upset andresult in serious injury or death. Lubricatethe chain frequently to minimize thepossibility of this kind of damage, seepage 107 (CLEANING ANDLUBRICATION).

CLEANING AND LUBRICATION

CAUTIONThe drive chain is provided with O-ringsbetween the link rollers and side plates,in order to retain the lubrication and toexclude dirt and grit. Carry out chain adjustment, lubrication,cleaning and replacement with greatcare. Remember to keep your fingersclear of the chain and sprocket.

Never wash the chain with jets of water,steam, high-pressure water and highlyflammable solvents.

Wash the chain with a nonflammablesolvent. If your chain rusts quickly,lubricate it more often.

Lubricate the chain every 625 mi (1,000km) or whenever it appears dry.After washing the chain and letting it dry,lubricate it exclusively with spray grease forchains provided with sealing rings, seepage 141 (LUBRICANT CHART).

CAUTIONMake sure that the chain lubricant youuse is appropriate for O-ring chains.There are some lubricants availablewhich contain substances which willdestroy the O-rings in your chain. If youhave any questions, contact your Localaprilia Dealer.

NOTE Do no t use the veh ic leimmediately after lubricating the chain,g ive the lubr icant a chance to dry,otherwise the chain will spray the lubricantall over you and your vehicle.


Adjust the tension adjusters (5) to obtainthe appropriate chain play, making surethat the edge of tension adjuster is in thesame posi t ion wi th regard to thereference marks (2) and (3) on each sideof your vehicle.Tighten the two lock nuts (4).Tighten the nut (1).


Check the chain play again, seepage 106 (CHECKING THE PLAY).

CHECKING THE WEAR OF THE CHAINAND SPROCKETSIn addition to the check, see page 106(CHECKING THE PLAY), every 6,250 mi(10,000 km) inspect the chain andsprockets to make sure that there are no:– damaged rollers;– loose pins;– dry, rusty, crushed or seized links;– excessive wear;– missing O-rings;

– sprocket or teeth excessively worn ordamaged.

You may check the wear of the chain andsprocket by grasping the chain where ittouches the rear sprocket, and pulling itaway from the sprocket as far as you can.If you are able to pull the chain far enoughaway from the sprocket so that you cansee light between the side plates of thechain and the sprocket teeth, the chain andsprocket are worn out and should bereplaced.

NOTE Always replace both sprocketsand the cha in when any o f thesecomponents are replaced.

CAUTIONIf chain rollers are damaged, the pinsand/or the O-rings are loose or missing,both sprockets as well as the chainmust be replaced.

CAUTIONLubr icate the chain f requent ly ,especially if it is rusty or dry to thetouch. If, after lubricating the chain, itstill has links which cannot be turnedeasily, the chain must be replaced.

WARNINGIf the throttle sticks open, it may causea collision with another vehicle, or anupset.If the throttle sticks, kill the engine withthe engine stop switch located on theright handlebar.Do not attempt to restart the engineuntil the throttle has been repaired andworks perfectly. If any fastener in the throttle systembecomes loose, you will also losecontrol of your vehicle.

Either situation can lead to an upset orcollision, which can result in seriousinjury or death.

Your vehicle is equipped with a doublecable throttle. One cable opens the throttlewhen you rotate the throttle grip towardsyou; the other closes the throttle when yourotate the gr ip away from you. I t isessential, when you release the throttlegrip, that it automatically return to the idleposition.

This double cable arrangement enhancessafety by providing for positive closing ofthe throttle.

Your vehicle is equipped with two groupof fuses:– the 15A auxiliary fuse group (1) placed

The gap must be 0.024 – 0.028 in (0.6 –0.7 mm), otherwise it is necessary to replacethe spark plug.

Make sure the gasket (12) is in goodcondition.

TO FIT THE SPARK PLUGWith the gasket (12) in place, screw thespark plug into the head finger tight.Tighten the spark plug with the specialspark plug wrench, approximately one-halfturn after it first snugly contacts the cylinderhead.

Spark plug tightening torque setting: 14.47 ftlb (20 Nm).

CAUTIONThe spark plug must be properlytightened, otherwise the engine mayoverheat and be seriously damaged.

Remove the battery, see page 125(REMOVING THE BATTERY), and put itin a cool, dry place.The best way to prevent batterydeterioration is to constantly leave a“trickle” charger with a capacity of about1/10th amp attached. These chargersare inexpensive and available from yourLocal aprilia Dealer, and will make surethat your battery always remains in tiptop condition.If this cannot be done, charge the batteryfor about 30 minutes using a batterycharger with a current capacity nogreater than 1/10th the capacity of thebattery, see page 125 (RECHARGINGTHE BATTERY).

I t is important to check the chargeperiodically (about once a month), duringthe winter or when the vehicle is not used,in order to prevent the deterioration of thebattery.

To quickly check the correct adjustment ofthe beam, place the vehicle on flat ground,32.81 ft (10 m) away from a wall.Turn on the low beam, sit on the vehicleand make sure that the beam projected onthe wall is slightly under the horizontal lineof the headlight (about 9/10th of the totalheight).

This should only be done to make itpossible to ride a short distance at night toa shop where a new bulb can be obtainedor home.

They will veryquickly etch into and damage the paint.Do not park your vehicle under trees, sincesome trees ooze resins that containchemicals which can damage the paint.

To reset these functions, see page 34(MULTIFUNCTION COMPUTER).If the vehicle is to be stored for a relatively longperiod of time, such as over the winter, somesimple precautions will make putting thevehicle back into service much easier.It is much less difficult to prepare the vehiclefor storage properly than it is to restore thevehicle to proper working condition after astorage period if you have forgotten orneglected to do this preparation.


To remove dirt and mud from the paintedsurfaces, use a low pressure water hose.Carefully wet the dirty parts and removemud and dirt with a soft car sponge. Youmay use proprietary car shampoos (2-4%parts of shampoo in clear water), to makethis easier.Carefully rinse so that no dirt or girtremains on the paintwork, and dry with aclean chamois or clean terry towel.To clean the engine and other non-paintedparts, use a mild solvent and a bristlebrush, along with plenty of rags.Parts in anodized or painted aluminumsuch as forks, wheel rims, frame, footpegsand so on, should be washed with mildsoap and water. Do not use aggressivedetergents or the surface treatment ofthese parts might damage.

After washing the vehicle, always:

KEEP POLLUTING SUBSTANCES ANDCOMPONENTS AWAY FROMCHILDREN.

DISPOSE OF POLLUTINGSUBSTANCES AND COMPONENTSPROPERLY.

Remove the plug (1) to make sure thatany water or other contaminant that mayhave accumulated inside the air cleanercase is drained.
