3. Evaporation Staining
Scale is the most obvious of hard water.
Scum is the curd or film which forms when hard water is
mixed with soaps. It clings to surfaces causing a cleaning
nightmare and wastes soap.
This is where hard water is left on a surface to dry.
The water evaporates away and the previously
dissolved hardness is left behind.
Chemical Treatment
Does not get rid of hardness
Just produces a coating to protect pipes.
Does not offer total protection
Prone to over dosing and blocking.
Physical (Electric & Magnetic)
Does not get rid of hardness- No hardness removed
Just affects the molecular structure of water – Will not produce
softened water.
Does not offer total protection
Will change back to its original state
The principal of operation.
All water is naturally soft. Water becomes “hard” by dissolving chalk & lime underground.
It is invisible in the water.
At this point the water
softener disconnects itself
from your plumbing and
uses salt water to
“regenerate” (flush and
clean) itself. Flushing the
accumulated hardness and
residual salt water away
down the drain.
3 Hard water flows through
the water softener and as
it does so the hardness is
trapped and held inside
the softener.
1 After a time the water
softener fills up with
hardness and cannot
continue to soften the
water.
2 It then rinses using fresh
water before
automatically
reconnecting to your
plumbing, ready to carry
on softening your water.

Softened water dissolves existing scale gradually & safely
Scum dulls your hair & stays on your skin sometimes blocking pores and causing irritation - this is especially
so for suffers of skin conditions such as eczema.
Damaging polyphosphates are added to soaps & detergents to soften the water and allow the cleaning
agents work. These are unnecessary when using soft water.
Also more efficient water & space heating means less fossil fuels are burned and lower emissions.
The water authorities recommend keeping a hard water drinking tap.
The water regulations stipulate you must have a separate drinking tap if
the water hardness is above 400ppm.
Example: Sodium Content:
A glass of softened water 50mg
A slice of brown bread 200mg
A tablespoon of tomato sauce 200mg
A glass if semi-skimmed milk 250mg
100g (3.5oz) bacon 250mg
1 beef burger or sausage 700mg
100g (3.5oz) of pork pie 700mg
100g (3.5oz) of yoghurt 800mg
1 bowl of tomato soup 1000mg
100g (3.5oz) of cheddar cheese 1500mg
