WHAT ARE THE ADVANTAGES OF UNDERTAKING A TVET COURSE?

The TVET option provides an alternate choice for

those students who desire to:

�� experience an adult learning environment

�� access classrooms, workshops, computer

laboratories, and facilities that are well equipped

and meet industry standards

�� be taught by industry trained and experienced

specialists

�� select from a wide range of courses

TVET courses (based on TAFE NSW mainstream

courses) will provide you with advanced standing and

credit towards TAFE NSW mainstream courses.

The majority of TVET courses also offer ‘continuing

student status’. This allows you to be given priority

entry into related courses within a 2 year period,

provided you have successfully completed your

course.

ABOUT TVET

What is TVET? (TAFE NSW DELIVERED VOCATIONAL EDUCATION AND TRAINING)

The HSC allows students to undertake study in a variety of vocational areas that provide work-related skills and knowledge. These VET courses count as units of study towards the HSC and many can also be used in the calculation of your Australian Tertiary Admissions Ranking (ATAR).

TVET courses:

�� have been developed or endorsed by the Board of

Studies

�� provide credit towards an AQF (Australian

Qualifications Framework) qualification which is

nationally recognised

�� count as units of study on the Year 11 Record of

Achievement or the Year 12 HSC

�� may contribute to the ATAR (depending on course

selected)

�� assist you to acquire new skills and capabilities

�� are appropriate for any ability level, including

those who plan to proceed to university study

�� are taught by teachers who have direct industry

links

�� provide all equipment, materials, protective

clothing and texts at no cost to all students

�� provide articulation into traineeships or

apprenticeships

�� provide maximum advanced standing into a TAFE

NSW Certificate course after leaving school

ATTENDANCE AT TAFE NSW

TVET courses are generally offered at TAFE for 4

hours, one afternoon per week over one or two years.

There are however other variations of course delivery

– see ‘Types of TVET courses available’.

WHAT COSTS ARE INVOLVED?

Students from Government schools are supported

by funds from the NSW Department of Education

and Training – no additional cost to students will be

incurred.

Students from non-Government schools will need

to discuss possible costs with their school. It is the

decision of the non-government school or the system

authority whether costs will be met out of school or

authority funds, or whether individual students will

have to cover all or part of the TVET course costs.

All students are required to pay for their own

travel costs to and from TVET courses. Mandatory

equipment, safety gear and textbooks will be

provided by TAFE.

SCHOOL-BASED APPRENTICESHIPS AND TRAINEESHIPSIn addition to the usual TVET course program, school-based apprenticeships (SBA) and school-based traineeships (SBT) are also available.

A school-based apprenticeship or traineeship combines paid work with TAFE training and school.

The SBA option is equivalent to the first year of a full-time apprenticeship, whilst an SBT will provide a certificate of proficiency in the traineeship area – a great start for your post-school career options!

Both of these options allow students to obtain valuable work skills and experience whilst undertaking paid part-time work as part of their HSC study.

STUDENTS WITH A DISABILITYCareful consideration must be given to the courses selected by students with a disability. The chosen course must be assessed as the most appropriate course for the student and one that will provide successful vocational outcomes together with the

opportunity of further education or employment.

Students with a disability can apply for TVET courses listed in this booklet. There are also a number of additional courses available that are offered specifically for students with a disability.

These courses are adapted to meet the needs of students and include in-class support. These are known as ‘discrete’ courses and are available in the following areas:

�� Automotive

�� Beauty Therapy

�� Business Services

�� Community Services (Aged Care)

�� Construction

�� Horticulture

�� Hospitality

�� Metals and Engineering

�� Retail

�� Transport and Logistics

Students with a confirmed disability will be interviewed by a school representative and a TAFE Disability Consultant who will determine what level of assistance may be required. Any additional support needs will be provided by TAFE NSW.

TVET 120 hour

These courses run for three school terms (4 hours per week) and give students the opportunity to try out a vocational area that they may wish to pursue as a post-school career option. Students undertaking a 120 hour TVET course will receive a TAFE Transcript of academic record which will list the units of competency that they have studied. These courses are open to both Year 11 and Year 12 students and give 2 units of HSC credit.

TVET 240 hour

These courses run for seven school terms (4 hours per week) - commencing in Year 11 and continuing into Year 12. Students receive a solid grounding in the vocational area, which can assist with making informed decisions about future study at either TAFE or university or can lead to direct employment after finishing school. Students undertaking a 240 hour TVET course will receive a TAFE Transcript of academic record and in some courses a Certificate II or Certificate III national qualification. These courses are open to Year 11 students only and give 2 units of HSC credit per year.

TVET 360 hour

These courses run for seven school terms (4-6 hours per week) – commencing in Year 11 and continuing into Year 12. There are only a limited number of 360 hour TVET courses and some will be School-based Apprenticeship or Traineeship courses. There will also be two or three block sessions of delivery over the two years of the course. Students undertaking a 360 hour TVET course will receive a total of 6 units of HSC credit over the two years and will receive a TAFE Transcript of academic record or in some instances a Certificate II or Certificate III national qualification.

TVET SPY

These are 240 hour TVET courses delivered in three school terms – designed as ‘fast track’ options to the standard 240 hour courses. Students undertaking a TVET SPY course will attend TAFE for seven to eight hours per week, including pupil free days and will achieve 4 units of HSC credit in the one year. They will receive a TAFE Transcript of academic record or in some instances a Certificate II national qualification. These courses are open to Year 11 and Year 12 students.

11TYPES OF TVET COURSES AVAILABLE

TVET COMBO

These courses consist of 2 x 120 hour TVET courses, designed to complement each other and delivered in the one day. Students undertaking these courses will get an understanding of the two different industry areas to assist them with post-HSC career options. Students undertaking a COMBO course will receive 4 units of HSC credit in one year.

Specialisation

These courses are either 60 hour or 120 hour ‘extension’ courses that are designed to complement other 240 hour VET courses. You must be co-enrolled in the corresponding 240 hour VET course either at school or at TAFE to be eligible to undertake a Specialisation course.

School holiday block delivery

These courses run during school holiday periods and will be delivered in 4 x 4-day sessions, either:

�� January – 8 days, April – 4 days, June – 4 days, July – 4 days

�� April – 4 days, June – 4 days, July – 4 days, September – 4 days

Students undertaking these courses have the

opportunity to try out a vocational area they may wish to pursue as a post-school career option and will receive 2 units of HSC credit.

Once a suitable course has been chosen, students will need to complete a ‘2015 TVET Expression of Interest form’ and submit to the institute. These forms can be obtained from your school or downloaded from our website and must be signed by student, parent and school representative prior to submission.

Loris RobertsLoris Roberts says TAFE SWSi gave him a great opportunity to learn about the animal care industry.

“TAFE opened up my eyes to all the jobs I could do in the animal studies field,” Loris said.

In 2012/13, whilst at Camden High School, Loris undertook a TVET course in Animal Studies at TAFE SWSi’s Campbelltown College, with units from his course counting towards his HSC.

Loris believes his course has given him a good foundation and will help him fulfil his dream of becoming a zoo keeper or a veterinarian.

The course gave Loris a chance to learn how to care for animals and also gain an understanding of the animal industry.

Loris is now enrolled in a Certificate III in Captive Animals at TAFE SWSi’s Bankstown College where he is taking the next step towards a career as a zoo keeper.

Anthony TersAnthony always had a passion for mechanics and spent his spare time helping his father repair cars and trucks, so it was a natural progression that he chose to undertake the Automotive Mechanical course as part of his HSC.

In March 2013, Anthony pursued employment with Heartland Motors at Chullora and was successful at being offered a School-based Apprenticeship (SBA).

Anthony is currently a Year 12 student at La Salle Catholic College and in the second year of his SBA and simply loving it! His passion and newly acquired skills also gave him the opportunity to compete in the 2013 Sydney region WorldSkills competition for school students. Anthony competed against

eight other students from across the Sydney region and was rewarded with first place – a wonderful achievement that will now see him compete for NSW at the upcoming National competition in Perth.

“Anthony has a ‘can do’ attitude and is hard working and diligent – these traits will see him achieve outstanding success in the Automotive Industry,” his workplace supervisor says.

Cindy FengCindy knows from first-hand experience that a TVET course really counts.

During 2012/13, whilst at Beverley Hills Girls High School, Cindy undertook a TVET course in Cert III Financial Services (Accounting) and was one of 121 students to receive a prestigious First in Course Award for the NSW HSC.

The course gave her an opportunity to gain the skills and knowledge needed to excel in a job in the financial services industry following school or in further study at TAFE or university.

“I think the course provided me with a head start and made me realise that accounting is the path I wanted to go down,” Cindy said.

She says TVET courses are a great way for HSC students to discover the right career path.

“A lot of students studying for their HSC are not sure what they want to do in the future, but my course gave me a good idea about what’s involved in the financial services industry,” She said.

“It also allowed me to do work placement and see what it’s like working for a business in the financial industry.”

Cindy enrolled in the Bachelor of Commerce at the University of New South Wales in 2014.

Cindy BalazCindy Balaz is determined to become a nurse when she finishes high school. That’s why the Merrylands High School student decided to enrol in a Human Services course, specialising in nursing at TAFE SWSi’s Wetherill Park College as part of her HSC.

She believes that her course is giving her a career head-start in nursing.

“One of the best things about my course is I’ve been given the opportunity to gain industry knowledge and hands-on skills through a work placement at Westmead Hospital,” Cindy said.

“I think the experience will put me on a good footing for further study in nursing at university next year.”

The course has given Cindy the opportunity to gain a greater understanding about the human body and the health care industry.

Cindy says that doing a TVET course is the best way for young people to get a practical understanding of a job while they are still at school.

Luke BennettLuke Bennett discovered that a course in plumbing at TAFE SWSi’s Miller College was a good fit whilst he undertook his HSC in 2013 at Ambarvale High School.

“I never really enjoyed studying but I’ve formed a love for plumbing through the combination of theory and practice,” Luke said.

The course taught Luke how to:

• handle and store plumbing materials

• use plumbing hand and power tools

• read plans and calculate plumbing quantities

• cut and join sheet metal

The units from his TVET course counted towards his HSC and will also help him complete an apprenticeship faster.
