IN MEMORIAM

Whereas an infinitely wise God has called to rest from her labors

our missionary sister, we bow in submission to His will but also in the

awareness that our loss is great.

Rev. Alice Coulter Coone was born in 1885 on the island of St.

Croix, American Virgin Islands. Early in life she came under the min-

istry of pioneer full salvation inissionaries to that Island, and was not

only saved and sanctified but became a volunteer, as a girl in her teens,

in the spread of the Gospel throughout the West Indies. Until 1918

Sister Coone labored among her people, first with Sister Irene Blyden

(Taylor), and later with Rev. James W. Coone, after her marriage to

him. Upon the untimely death of Brother Coone, in 1918, Sister Coone

came to the U. S.. In 1922 she was ordained as a minister in the New

York District and she served as pastor, evangelist, and in whatever

capacity her talents could be used. In 1936 she resumed her labor on

behalf of the people in the West Indies, in Barbados, then in effective

deputational work, and finally, for the last three years of her life, in

Trinidad.

On February 9, 1948 were ended the long years of selfless service

to souls, of devotion to God, of zeal for the cause of Christ. May the

Lord of harvest find new recruits to stand in the gap created as this

valiant reaper has gone to her rich reward.

Whereas God has called to her eternal rest Mrs. Edgar R. Holley,

wife of our esteemed brother-pastor, be it resolved that the sympathy

of the conference be extended to the bereaved husband and to the sur-

viving relatives, and that this expression of condolence be spread upon

the minutes of the conference.

Annual Report of the District Superintendent

To the 27th Annual Conference of the New York District of the

Pilgrim Holiness Church.

Greetings:

God in His boundless mercy has again allowed us to meet in our

Annual Conference. During the past year, death has invaded our ranks

and the wife of our dear Bro. E. R. Holley has been called home. To

him we extend our sincere sympathy and pray that God will comfort and sustain him. On the Mission field another has laid down her cross and exchanged her work for the reward that is promised to the faith-ful. Sister Alice Coone, after a short illness went to be with her Lord from the island of Trinidad. May God keep us ready for our call.

The progress made during the past year has not been too gratifying. Yet there has been some in a material way and I trust also in spiritual things. At Bennettsville a new church building is nearing completion. I am hoping that in the not too distant future, the congregation there will be organized into a full fledged Pilgrim Holiness Church. The Binghamton Church has purchased two lots in an excellent location on which they plan to erect a new church and parsonage. Work on this project is expected to start soon. At Bloomingdale a residence has been purchased for a parsonage and the new pastor and his wife are already occupying the same. Parsonage properties have been acquired at both Rockwood and Fox Hill. The Grand Gorge and Green Grove congre-gations have plans also for new parsonages. Improvements and repairs have been made in several other churches. There is much that can be done along this line. Our buildings should be kept in good repair and suitable improvements made in order to furnish adequate Sunday School facilities and that our people may not be ashamed to ask their friends and neighbors to come and worship in our churches. Neatness in Church and parsonage should not be overlooked.

Our giving to Foreign Miissions has been commendable. May God help us to keep it up.

I am informed that we are ahead of last year's good report in our offerings for both Home and Foreign Missions. For this we thank God and His people. There has been some sag in our Allentown Bible In-stitute support and in a few instances a failure in meeting our budget obligations. A system of monthly offerings to cover these items would greatly help. None of our pastors are paid too much and some get far too little. In these days of high costs it would be well for the different congregations to look into the matter of their pastor's support and if at all possible, increase the amount being given.

Some 21 churches with their pastors have accepted the Pension Plan. Others have considered the matter and deferred action. It would be

—22—

Page 22: Twenty-Seventh Annual Conference

well if a way could be found so that all our churches and their pastors could participate in the plan.

Some of our brethren made an effort to open up a work in Cana-joharie, N. Y. this past year. Brother Lamb. with Brother Finch hired a hail and along with others helping, continued meetings during the summer and into the Fall. Some good services were held but they were unable to accomplish what they desired. This effort was partly financed by the District Church Extension fund. At Gulf Summit, 12 miles from E. Windsor, Brother Hamm with his people has been holding meetings in homes. Several have sought God and the prospect is good for a class to be formed there in the near future.

Last Conference it was voted that we purchase a portable tab-ernacle to be used in opening up new work. This has not been done yet. The impossibility of securing proper material has held up this project. Just recently Brother Jump has succeeded in getting the material with which to construct the portable tabernacle. We regret the delay but it has seemed to be unavoidable.

On the Binghamton Camp Grounds a new dormitory is being put up. This has taken much of the time of our good brethren. Several new cottages have been built on the Vermontville Camp ground. Brother Culver, with the help of some of the brethren has taken care of this. There is a great need for more cottages on Victory Grove Camp ground to care for the increasing attendance. Our Camps serve a good purpose and must be supported. -

Our greatest need is for revivals to come to our churches. With too many, the yearly or twice yearly meetings have not resulted in new souls being saved and added to the church. The church is edified, but no new ones brought in. We should work for revivals which will re-kindle the fires of soul passion, sacrifice and devotion. The only way to insure this is the old hard way of intense desire, importunate prayer, unfaltering faith and untiring work. Revivals will save us from stag-nation and death as a Church. May God help us.

I have preached 122 times, conducted 15 Annual meetings and at-tended 24 Church Board meetings during the year. Each organized church has been visited two or more times. Besides this I have as-sisted in two funerals and performed one marriage ceremony.

I am grateful to those who made it possible for me to visit the Annual Conference of our Mexican missionary work. After the Con-ference it was my privilege to visit some of the market towns and see some of the churches built with the money sent by the people of the N. Y. District. I was thrilled with what I witnessed of the work in Mexico. I have travelled over 12,000 miles in the interests of the District. God and His people have been very good to me. I thank Him and them for all the kindness shown me during the past year.

Respectfully submitted, A. E. Blann
