CRIME: BURGLARIES LEAVE SECURITY COMPLEX RESIDENTS FEARFUL

    Safety fears in Bardale

    R

ecent burglaries in the Bardale Village

Phase 1 security complex in Silver-

sands have left residents fearing for

    their safety.

In one incident home owner Darryl Dryer

and his wife were asleep when two thieves

    broke into their duplex.

    The incident happened onFriday, 17April

    at about 01:45, Dryer said.

    He toldTygerBurgerhiswife heard anoise

    emanating fromthebathroomandwokehim

    up.

She heard a noise that sounded like the

toilet door closing. She then saw the door

    handle go down, Dryer explained.

He said he noticed the silhouette of a per-

son on one of the walls. He noticed one of the

burglars on the veranda near his window

and heard one fiddling inside the bathroom.

    Resident intruders

    Dryer got up and saidhismovementmight

have disturbed the burglars from continu-

    ing with the plans.

When I looked out of my window I saw

    someone running down the road.

Dryer said he suspects the intruders re-

side in the complex. This is not someone

who jumped over electrical fencing, he

said. The thieves only managed to escape

with some perfume, Dryer said. He reported

the matter to the security on duty.

Fellow resident Francois Barnies said he

also lost some of his valuables after his

    house was broken into.

When he returned home on Monday a

week ago he noticed something was not in

place. Whenmy wife entered the house she

saw the kitchen cupboard doors were open

and the main bedroom had been ransacked.

The thieves entered through the window.

Both of the couples rings were stolen along

with a laptop, DVD player and some cloth-

    ing.

    Barnies told TygerBurger four other

homes in the complex had also been broken

into over the past few weeks.

The incident at his house, he says, was re-

ported to the security, Mfuleni police and

    the property managers.

According to Barnies the electric fence

surrounding the complex is out of order. He

was also informed that the CCTV cameras

    are no longer operating.

    No response

More security personnel need to be em-

ployed. They are too few for such a big com-

    plex, he claims.

He said he fears the criminalsmay return.

Bardale Village Phase 1, according to its

developers, is known as the Vanilla Street

    Homeowners Association (VSHOA).

The managing agent of the phase is Inte-

    grated Housing Facilities Management.

Michael Bauer, portfolio manager for the

VSHOA, was approached for comment last

week but did not respond at the time of going

    Land invasion high alert

    RICHARD ROBERTS

    @richardjohn_rj

    L

    ocal ward councillors have been

warned to be on the lookout for poten-

    tial land invaders.

The chairperson for subcouncil 21, Stev-

en Vuba, told councillors at a subcouncil

meeting last week that unless they report

or act on land grabbers, more land will be

invaded as was the case in Kalkfontein re-

    cently.

The invasion in Kalkfontein three weeks

ago was accompanied by a great deal of vio-

    lence.

Several people from the Vrygrond in-

    formal settlement and neighbouring areas

moved back onto an open piece of land after

which they had to be forcefully removed.

City law enforcement, metro police and

    KuilsRiver policewere attackedby the land

invaders and several vehicles were pelted

with stones. Additionally, six houses at the

nearly completed Hamilton Estate were al-

    so damaged.

Houses were set alight and tyres burnt.

Hugeparts of the roads leading into the area

also had to be closed for traffic.

    On Wednesday Vuba requested council-

lors to be vigilant and not turn a blind eye

    to land invaders.

Even if it does not occur in our area,

    he said.

He added that councillors should act on

land invasions and report such incidents.

In his speech he said the City indicated

they would act against illegal land invaders

    in Kalkfontein.

The City will use every available re-

source at its disposal to prevent land inva-

sions and will make sure those who are re-

sponsible for any incitement of violence,

land invasion and other criminal acts face

the full consequences of the law.

    Majidie Abrahams, ANC PR councillor,

said people need to respect the rule of law

    at all times.

If we do not respect it, we will find our-

selves on thewrong side of the law, he said.

Abrahams said there is one constitution

which governs all the countrys citizens and

all need to abide by it.

It is incumbent on all of us that this does

    not happen again, he said.

Five land invaders were arrested during

the recent protest and land invasion and

    charged with public violence.

They appeared in the Blue Downs Magis-

    trates Court andwere released onwarning.

The City, along with the local police, are

currently monitoring the situation in Kalk-

    fontein.

V Residents should contact the antiland invasion

unit on 0800 225 669with any information on pos

    sible land invasions

One of the houses at the nearly completed Hamilton Estate near Kalkfontein was petrol

bombed by protesting land invaders three weeks ago. Last week subcouncil 21 chairperson,

Steven Vuba, asked councillors to be vigilant and report land invaders.

Aggressie teenoor hawelose mense in die

gemeenskap is nie n oplossing nie.

    loop.

    S meen Marian Nieuwoudt, wyksraads-

    bestaan.

    Beplanning

    Aspekte vanNieuwoudt se beplanning sal

binne die volgende ses maande in werking

tree wanneer haar wyk, wat Proteahoogte

    insluit, twee Rent-a-Cops kry, befonds

pel gestuur is, voorsien munisipale polisie-

    Haweloosheid is n maatskaplike pro-

    n doeltreffende maatskaplike stelsel be-

    skikbaar nie.

    Maatskaplike werkers se werkslading is

doodeenvoudig te groot enhulle kan dus nie

meer terapeutiese werk doen nie. Dis eer-

lose mense in Brackenfell al baie jare hier

woon en selfs hier grootgeword het.

Daar is byvoorbeeld n groep hawelose

mense in die sakesentrum wat reeds sedert

hul kinderdae daar bedel en in omliggende

    strate slaap.

Hulle is deur die gemeenskap grootge-

maak.

deployed to fight wildfires often place their

own lives in danger when doing so.PHOTO:

    ANDREW HAGEN

    Local volunteers endure life

    threatening hazards

Following the recent helicopter crash in

    theBainskloofPass inwhich two firefight-

ing volunteers lost their lives, the impor-

tant role these rescue workers play in

dousing fires and saving lives came under

    the spotlight.

The two volunteers who lost their lives

while battling a fire are Darrell Rea (39)

and Jastun Visagie (23), both crew mem-

bers of Working on Fire (WOF).

They were fighting fires in the moun-

tains near Wellington when their helicop-

    ter crash landed.

Several fires have hit the Cape Peninsu-

la over the last two months. One fire

which lasted for more than four days rav-

aged the south Peninsula. Another which

also lasted days broke out in the Jonker-

    shoek Mountain outside Stellenbosch in

    the Boland.

Firefighters from City of Cape Towns

Fire and Rescue Services as well as WOF

    a government funded firefighting relief

    and support organisation incurred inju-

ries during some of these call-outs.

    Another groupof brave individualswho

    frequentlyput their lives indangerare the

members of the Volunteer Wildfire Servi-

    ces.

Peter Wynne, crew leader at the Volun-

    teerWildfire Services, said their firefight-

ers are dedicated volunteers who give

their time to safeguard the sensitive biodi-

    versity of the Western Cape.

There is no standard answer to the ques-

tion why theyve joined the Volunteer

    Wildfire Services, he said.

    Its about passion, discipline, training,

    beingwith like-minded people, even about

    the adrenaline rush.

    Broadly speaking, uncontrolled fires

are structural fires and fires in nature, he

    explained. Whereas municipal fire servi-

ces mostly attend to structural fires in

    buildings, Volunteer Wildfire Services

role is that of wildfire suppression.

    They operate from their Newlands,

    Jonkershoek and South Peninsula sta-

    tions.

    Only with training, discipline and

teamwork can we take on the challenges

    that wildfires bring, says Peter.

    Our training includes, among others,

    wildfire suppression, firefighting equip-

ment, map work, radios, 4x4 driving

skills, rope work and first aid.

There are no heroes on the fire line.

Were only doing what we believe in. And

we do it as a team, he stated.

    Volunteer Wildfire Services is current-

ly recruiting for active firefighters and

    members who provide support services.

    owat 90 Wesbank-ouers het verlede

week dwarsdeur die nag buitekant n

laerskool tougestaan in n poging om

hul kinders vir die 2016-skooljaar te regi-

    streer.

    Die groep het verlede Maandagmiddag

by die Primre Skool Hoofweg begin tou-

    staan.

Allistair Sauer, skoolhoof, het ges regi-

strasies vir die skool se gr. R-klas is Dins-

    dagoggend geopen.

    OuerswouookdieDinsdagaandbuite die

skool tou staan, di keer omhul kinders vir

dagnag trotseer. Oorkant die skoolhek op

n oop stuk veld het sommiges n vuur ge-

maak, vertel Mario Adams, n ouer.

lys gehelp. Tercia Gertse, nog n ouer, s:

Dis net by Hoofweg wat dit so gaan. Ek

ers wil hul kinders daar inskryf.

Gertse het reeds twee kinders wat by Pri-

    mre Skool Hoofweg skool gaan.

Dis n baie goeie skool.

Sy was Maandag geluk-

staan. Ek was derde in die tou. My kind

wens in gevaar.

hul kind wil inskryf. Enige persoon, maak

Sauer s elke ouer wie se kind geregi-

    Hometown hero: Blackheath 400

    metre hurdle athlete Lindsay

Hanekom was given a warm welcome

this past weekend after achieving a

gold medal in his sports code in

    Bloemfontein recently. Lindsay, who

    matriculated from Blackheath High

School in 2011, is the current

    under23 junior South African

    champion. He obtained a personal

best in 400 metre hurdles and also

obtained gold medals in the 4x100

    metres and 4x400 metres. Several

    residents lined the streets of

    Blackheath on Saturday afternoon to

welcome him back and cheer as he

entered the area in a convertable

vintage car. A ceremony was later

held in a park in Tafelberg Road.

    Lindsay currently studies at the

    University of Pretoria.

    actory workers and business owners

    in the Blackheath industrial area

might soon be driving on better roads,

improving their skills, or making use of a

    new and improved taxi rank.

These are just few of the suggestions put

forward by role-players from the Black-

heath City Improvement District (CID) re-

cently in an initial report on plans to up-

gradeand improve the light industrial area.

The report forms part of the City of Cape

    Towns department of economic develop-

    ments Blackheath Business Retention and

    Expansion Programme (BR&E).

The programme seeks to improve indus-

trial areas across the city with the help of

the business and factory owners. The pro-

gramme is also initiated in Retreat, Philip-

pi and Bellville, said programme coordina-

tor Gerswhin Gouldien addressing a sub-

    council meeting last week.

The report outlines key findings and rec-

    ommendations which include improving

business leadership in the area, upgrading

    important infrastructure, making informa-

    tion about skills development initiatives

    more widely available, synchronising sup-

    ply chain management process among

business, as well as protecting the industri-

    al character of the area.

    Gouldien said department officials went

door to door to canvas businesses.

He told councillors the Blackheath indus-

trial area is ideally located and provides job

opportunities to people from across sub-

    council 21.

    Following several meetings with role-

players and site visits, the plans have been

drawn up and now need implementation,

    Gouldien said.

He said the department and CID want to

look at how and where the subcouncil can

assist in expanding business in the area.

As we know, it is very difficult to attract

businesses these days. That is whywe rath-

erwant to try and support the existing busi-

ness in the area, Gouldien said.

The CID, he said, indicated infrastruc-

    ture requirements such as upgrading

    Range Road a main route.

We are also looking at why we cannot

have a proper taxi rank in the area.

He said with the aid of the local subcoun-

cil these issues can be dealt with easily, al-

though implementation would be over a pe-

    riod of years.

We want council to use their political

    muscle and help assist businesses.

Ward councillor Bert van Dalen said he

    welcomed the departments programme

    and the plans.

Wewant to thank the department for do-

ing this. There is a lot ofwork thatwent into

compiling the report and a lot of role-play-

ers had their fingers in the pie, he added.

    Majidie Abrahams, ANC PR councillor,

said while the council generally welcomes

and support such initiatives to improve job

creation, one also need to determine what

    the costs involved will be.

The business plans have been compiled,

but what is the financial implications for

    the council, he asked.

Gouldien said the actual costs have not

    yet been finalised.

A follow-up meeting is scheduled to take

    place later this month.
