A total of 71 % of all faults logged with theCity of Cape Town over the festive seasonwere resolved within 14 days despite redu-ced staff over the festive season.

“The remainder of complaints, which in-clude more complex faults, are being atten-ded to as a matter of urgency by staff wor-king overtime,” said mayoral committeemember for corporate services DemetriQually.

Cape Town has numerous channels ofcommunication that residents can use tocontact the city in order to report service de-livery faults.

While there is one call centre number, re-sidents may be redirected to the corporatecall centre, the electricity technical operati-

ons centre or the water technical operationscentre depending on their request.

During peak times residents also have theoption of sending an SMS or an email to thetechnical operations centre concerned, withtheir service request. This is especially help-ful in the case of electricity outages andburst water pipes as the request is logged byan agent on behalf of the resident and routeddirectly to the correct department saving re-sidents valuable time and money.

Automated messages are also placed onthe system informing residents of electricityoutages around the city which are being ad-dressed by council staff.

When customers contact the call centre, they are given the option of receiving a refe-

rence number via SMS or email. This optionmakes it more convenient for them to keepthe reference number so that they can followup on any outstanding service requests.

Useful Contacts:V Call Centre 0860 103089. This number

can be used for all service requests relatingto solid waste, electricity, water, roads andstormwater and parks. The number can alsobe used for all accounts and general enquir-ies such as motor vehicle registration andtraffic fines;

A trip across Africa to raise funds for qualityeducation will soon be coming to a close forfour local motorcyclists.

Peter Pretorius (35) and Gerhard (53), Os-car (49) and Rosca de Waal (20) from Melk-bosstrand set off for Uganda on 10 December.

The foursome reached their goal destina-tion, Kampala on 31 December and now, fourweeks into their journey, they are in the fi-nal stages of their 15 000 km trek back home. They are expected to reach Cape Town on 22January.

The adventure, dubbed SA2UGANDA,was undertaken to raise money for QualityEducation for South Africa (QE4SA). QE4SAis an initiative of Symphonia for South Afri-ca, focused on improving the state of educa-tion in the country through its School @ theCentre of Community (S@CC) programme.

The SA2UGANDA team planned to travelabout 350 kilometres a day, but averaged upto 550 kilometres on some stretches.

Having passed through some of Africa’smost remote communities in the course oftheir expedition, the group visited a total of

10 countries – South Africa, Namibia, Bot-swana, Zambia, Rwanda, Uganda, Kenya,Tanzania, Mozambique and Lesotho – bat-tling blistering heat, treacherous winds andunexpected thunderstorms on the way.

They are currently making their waydown the east coast of the continent throughTanzania and Mozambique, and are expect-ed to cross the border back into South Africaat Ponto do Ouro today.

‘For fun!’Oscar explains that the inspiration for em-

barking on the journey was threefold.“For the fun of it, to see other African

countries and peoples – there is so much tosee – and to ride for a great cause: QE4SA,”he explains.

“I am a father blessed with two children.I know first-hand what the benefits of a qual-ity education mean to our society,” says Os-car, a vocal advocate of active citizenship.

“What you sow is what you reap. Let’s stopbeing passengers in life. We all have the re-sponsibility to get involved and do some-

thing to improve the country’s educationsystem,” he adds.

The 11 000 kilometre-long journey was notwithout glitches, however. The motorcycles’shocks, for one, took a beating on the chal-lenging terrain.

“At some stage we imagined ourselves tolook like bad circus clowns due to badly-worn or no shocks!” Peter says.

Tumbling aheadAnd tumbles were inevitable.“We all kissed the floor a couple of times!”

he jokes. “Rosca tipped in the mud and Ger-hard hit a bump and did some unplannedone-tyre motion for a few yards.”

After a few days of riding almost non-stop,Oscar complained that his saddle was start-ing to feel like an ironing board.

But the positives of the journey far out-weighed the trials.

“These travels are so humbling. We havesuch great neighbours on the African conti-nent. There is so much to see and do,” Oscarsays.

Peter agrees. “We saw giraffes, witnessedmagnificent views and met some amazingpeople. We are indeed blessed and thank Godfor bringing us this far on this journey. MayGod bless our journey homeward-bound.”

With some 4 000 km left on their trip be-fore reaching Cape Town, people are encour-aged to still donate towards their cause byvisiting www.qe4sa.org/index.php/sa2uganda.

All contributions will go to Symphonia forSouth Africa’s Partnerships for Possibilityprogramme, a process designed to assistprincipals fulfil their roles as communityleaders by partnering them with businessleaders. Partnerships for Possibility hasdemonstrated the success that can beachieved when schools are supported bybusiness, government, parents and the com-munity. The project is currently running in84 schools with an aim to reach 150 schoolsin 2013.V Follow the progress of the team on Twitter at@SA2Uganda. For more information visit http://www.qe4sa.org.

‘Protect these areas’

Subcouncil chairman and wardcouncillor, Alderman James Vosinvestigates the sites owned byEskom with local resident AdrianGreenwood during a recentcleanup campaign. The campaignwas established so that alienvegetation can be eradicated andthe site’s environmental worthmaintained.

Concerns thatSubcouncil 3 chairmanJamesVos had over the management of protectedareas around Plattekloof Natural HeritageSite and servitude areas led to several siteinspections last year.

Sites under high voltage lines into CapeTown, owned by Eskom, were among thosevisited. These are located alongside Edge-mead andMonte Vista and opposite sectionsof Bothasig and across from BosmansdamDrive and Giel Basson Drive.

“It is apparent Eskomhad been practisingbush cutting in order to ensure no veld firesoccur under the power lines,” Vos said.

“The fact remains that an uncontrolledfire carries the risk of flashovers whichcould disrupt power supply and result in se-vere prejudice to industry and households. This is a legitimate concern of Eskom,” hesaid.

Vos said because areas under the powerlines are environmentally sensitive areaswhich contain several very rare plant spe-cies and indigenousplant species, he is of theview that it has to be managed sensitivelyand correctly. “I have communicated myconcerns to Eskom in respect of themethodsof bush clearing and the shortcomings relat-ing to themaintenance of fire breaks aroundthe boundaries and lack of upkeep of thefootpaths and fencing, in addition to regularlitter picking and repairs to the gates,” hesaid.

Vos said anadvisory committeewas set upmany years ago, adding that it was question-able as to whether it adequately fulfilled itsfunction.

“To this end the advisory committee wasreconstituted in June 2000 with formal rep-resentation by Eskom, Unicity TygerbergAdministration, Ratepayers, Botanical Soci-ety and the Western Cape Nature Conserva-

tion Board.“My information is that the advisory

committee has not been functioning sincethen. It is clear that if it had been opera-tional, it would have proposed alternativesto bush cutting and oversight in terms ofthe management of the sites.”

Vos said the fact that the advisory com-mittee is not constituted by Eskom is un-fortunate, and points to a lack of communi-

cation in its organisation. He undertook to write to Eskom, request-

ing immediate remedial action be taken byappointing specialists to assess the damageand propose measures to rehabilitate thesite.

“I will do this and in addition Eskomshould ensure that the advisory committeeis instituted and enjoys a higher status thanbefore,” Vos said.

Bags of Opportunity, a Milnerton-based jobcreation and recycling initiative which cre-ates handmade gift bags from recycled ma-terial, recently supplied 150 bags for anevent at the Cape Town International Con-vention Centre (CTICC).The idea of bringing Bags of Opportunity

on board to provide bags for the CTICC staffevent came from Fresh Brand Activation,a full-service marketing agency based inParklands which facilitated the event. The bags were ideal because CTICC is a

green-friendly venue and all bags were cre-ated from their own 2012 posters. In keeping with the spirit of Christmas,

the bags were large enough to hold a wholehost of goodies, and also gave unemployedwomen from Joe Slovo Park the opportuni-ty to earn money during this period.Gift bags can be made from all kinds of

newsprint including newspapers, posters, pamphlets and advertising brochures.Sizes vary from small and medium (per-

fect for CDs, jewellery and gifts) towine bot-tle and A4 size, but can also be tailor-madeto order. All proceeds go to the unemployedwomen who make them.Free demonstrations are offered to sen-

An avid photographer was thoroughly puz-zled by a exotic fish she found onMilnertonbeach recently.Rika van Rensburg from Brackenfell and

her 11-year-old grandson Dagan happenedon this strange-looking fish during an out-ing on 19 December.“The fish seemed to be stranded in the

shallow water and my grandson helped it

back towards deeper waters. It howeverkept beingwashedback onto the beach,”Ri-ka said.“It was the first time I had seen such a

fish.“At first I thought it was a fish that had

been bitten in half but then I noticed thestrange tail with the little fins,” she saidadding that the total length of the fish wasabout 50 cm.The fish is a slender sunfish (Ranzania

laevis) which grows to a length of about80 cm.In February 2011 several incidents of

these fish washing up along the beaches ofBlouberg,Melkbos andNoordhoekwere re-ported to the Two Oceans Aquarium.Aquarium curator Michael Farquhar

then attributed the occurrence to weatherconditions.“The strong south-easterly winds we

have been experiencing recently result inupwellings of icy cold water off our westcoast.“Slender sunfish are a tropical species

and prefer temperate condi-tions.“The reason for them wash-

ing ashore is probably becausethey are trapped and cannotfunction in the coldwater,” Far-quhar explained in an article onthe aquarium’s webpage. On Monday the aquarium’s

operations manager TinusBeukes confirmed this as a pos-sible reason for the recent inci-dents of washed up sunfish.“I have been with the aquari-

um for 17 years and last yearwas the first time I saw some-thing like this.“This year we have already

seen three of these sunfishwashup, one of them inside the harbour.“The problem is that these species of sun-

fish school together, so if you come acrossone on shore, it is not a good sign.”Tinus added that a living manta ray that

washed up on the beach in front of the re-search aquarium in Sea Point last week, could also be indicative of the effect of cli-mate change.“This is a tropical fish and shouldn’t even

be in these waters,” he said.V Any incidents of washed up slender sunfish canbe reported to Tinus Beukes via [email protected].

Hundreds of people were left homeless aftera fire swept through the Du Noon informalsettlement on New Year’s Day, while about20 homeless people lost their belongings dur-ing a reed fire at Zoarvlei earlier this year.

The fire broke out in the Thembeni infor-mal settlement in Du Noon and was reportedto authorities at 01:12.

The fire destroyed 15 formal houses andanother 220 shacks in the area. As a resultof the fire 800 people were left displaced. Theblaze also damaged the overhead electricitysupply.

Technicians were called in to repair thepower supply.

The gusting wind conditions that fuelledthe spread of the flames made it difficult forfirefighters to bring the fire under control.

The city’s disaster response teams assist-ed the fire victims with the supply of foodparcels, blankets, baby packs, clothing andbuilding material; including emergencytrauma counselling.

The South African Social Security Agency(SASSA) has also assisted the city with the

provision of social relief. The city has made arrangements with the

Department of Home Affairs to provide the

fire victims with temporary IDs.The cause of these fires has not been estab-

lished, however it is alleged that it was

caused by negligence by persons under theinfluence of alcohol.

Donations are welcome. The public whowant to contribute to the disaster relief oper-ations can contact the city’s Disaster RiskManagement Centre on 080 911 HELP (4357).

Reeds fireOn Saturday 5 January 19:27 a large area

of reeds caught alight in the Zoarvlei wet-lands in Rugby.

Members of fire and rescue servicesbrought the fire under control within twohours. The personal belongings of 20 peopleliving among the reeds were destroyed.

These people were also assisted by the dis-aster response teams with supplies and trau-ma counselling.

The city encourages residents to be firesafe when working with open flames. Whengoing to bed, residents should isolate electri-cal devices and extinguish gas burners, can-dles, lamps and paraffin stoves.V For more information on how to prevent fires visitwww.capetown.gov.za/disaster.

News of a shark presence sent swim-mers and surfers scattering from thewater at Big Bay a few weeks ago.City authorities were alerted to an

injured whale in in the Derdesteenarea near Bloubergstrand on 21 De-cember. Reports were also receivedof three great white sharks in the vi-cinity of the whale.Law enforcement’s marine unit

and officials from the environmentalresource management departmentwere sent to investigate the situa-tion. The Department of Environ-mental Affairs had also recruited thepolice’s border police unit to assist. The whale was later spotted drift-

ing approximately two kilometres

off-shore in the direction of the CapeTown harbour. The mammal wasstill alive and the three sharks wereapparently still circling around theanimal.Reports later in the day confirmed

that the injured whale seemed to befine and was swimming with its calftowards Robben Island. No shark at-tack was recorded. The threat posed to beach-goers by

the sharks’ presence has now subsid-ed.Derrick Frazer, manager of the Big

BaySurfLifesavingClub, saidheandhis wife came across the whale whilestand up paddling from Big Bay toMelkbosstrand.“We didn’t see any sharks. The

NSRI saw the whale in distress and

the possibility of sharks was men-tioned, then the story just spreadfrom there,” Frazer said about theshark alarm raised at Big Bay.“I asked around if anyone saw the

sharks but I could not track down an-yone who could confirm the story. We also sent out our rubber duck tohave a look,” Frazer confirmed. He was particularly interested in

the whale’s presence as he had comeacross it himself earlier. “It camequite close to us, and was about 50 moffshore.”Frazer said he could not see any

visible sign of injury on the animal.“As it had a calf with it, it could bethat thewhalewas just slowing downto give the calf a chance to catch up,”he said.

As jy die

It is bin day and I can countnumerous plastic bags of breadand buns along the little pathin the green belt. I know we allmean well, but take a walk andsee where most of your littleacts of kindness land up. Thosethat are meant to receive areso fed-up that all your oldbread, rolls and ripe fruits aretotally disregarded. So beforeyou put your goodies in yourbin, find another route ofgetting rid of it. Perhapsgrandma’s bread puddingrecipe is an idea, the birds inyour garden or collect left-overfood for someone’s pet.I have also seen old shoes,

lame tekkies and broken toyson top of bins. These things arejust cast aside a few blocksfurther down the road, I myselfdiscovered my “gift” unappreci-ated.If we continue to donate our

rags and bags, we do not addvalue to the person. It rather becomes one man’s

kom kos of water gee. Verdersal hy mos orraait wees?

SLICE OF LIFE

Watching the news this festiveseason, I was appalled to seethe number of fatalities on ourroads this year.Clearly, the silly season

extends to the highways astransport minister, Ben Martinssays most of the road accidentsthis year were caused bydrunken driving, excessivespeeding and dangerous over-taking. Have people just forgot-ten the rules of the road?More than 1 400 people lost

their lives this Christmas, simply because of irresponsibledriving.Let’s bring that home. Our

neighbours lost their little boythis holidays when he was hitby a drunken driver whileriding his bicycle. A family hasbeen robbed of their son.How many other families

have not similarly been robbed, because somebody decided: “Ag,I’m fine to drive,” or “One

more drink won’t hurt,” oreven: “I’ll take the gap, I’llmake it past the truck.”A friend’s mother started her

year in hospital, because atruck driver decided to try andovertake two cars on a high-way. Would the extra fewminutes it would have takenhim to get to his destinationhave hurt him?Sometimes we get lucky, and

these decisions are harmless, but sometimes we aren’t andyour simple little act of irre-sponsibility could have farreaching effects. As we start the New Year off,

with big plans and resolutions, why not actively make thedecision to think while you aredriving, to be more responsible. It may end up being the

resolution that saves your life.SHOCKED

The response to the Animal Anti-CrueltyLeague’s Christmas stocking appeal at theend of 2012 was a big success, thanks to peo-ple’s kind hearts.

Adoption staff of this animal welfare or-ganisation requested the public to donatetoys, chews and treats for the shelter dogsand cats, as part of a project.

“As the public holidays are long and lone-ly for the animals and many of them havenever had anything nice in their lives, theidea was to give each animal a stockingwith a toy and a treat. The idea originatedfrom our adoptions officer Helen Sadler’sdaughter Caitlyn, after she was involved ina Santa shoebox project at her school,” saidAlma Schaap.

“We are delighted to report that the re-sponse was extremely positive. Not onlydid we receive the toys and treats asked for,but many other items such as food and col-lars and leads. Many groups of friends andcolleagues stood together to raise funds andgather goods for us,” Alma and Helen said.

They thanked everyone involved, ex-pressing their heartfelt thanks for contri-butions, big or small.

“This year Christmas was special here,as many volunteers gathered and spent themorning with the animals whilst givingthem their presents,” Alma said.

Tjaart en Dave maak wéér so

LEON STEENKAMP

The beach at Big Bay was a hive of activity on Sundaywhen the local lifesaving club hosted the second legof the WP Lifesaving Nippers Series.

Although the young team of the Big Bay Surf LifesavingClub (BBLSC) were out for revenge following their secondplace after Clifton during the first event in December, itwas not to be. The BBLSC nippers had to be satisfied withthird spot as a mere five points separated them and run-ners-up Fish Hoek. Clifton again took the honours.

There were however some good individual results. In the u-14 category Kurt Rautenbach won both the Surf

Swim and Board events and came third in the sprints. Ka-ri Steyn won the Surf Swim and Board events and camesecond in the Sprints in the u-13 girls’ category.

In the u-13 boys’ division Joshua Templeton finishedthird in the Sprints.

In the u-11 boys’ category Connor Rautenbach (secondin Surf Swim, first in Board), Jordyn West (second inBoard), Luke Inder (third inBoard) andCadeEvans (thirdin Sprints) performed well.

Among the u-11 girls Mia van Aswegen came second inthe Board, Pascale de Freitas third in both Board and SurfSwim. Hannah Hillman (u-10 girls) was third in the BodyBoard. In theu-9 girls’ categoryMorganBosmancamesec-ond in the Swim and third in the Board and in the u-9boys Naor Lombard finished second in the Swim.

In the teams division Hannah Hillman, Kira Pooley andLuke Barry placed third in the u-10 Body Board relayevent whilst Kyle Inder, Zack Hillman, Cade Evans andAndre Bester won the u-12 Beach Relay.

The third and final leg of the series takes place at Mil-nerton beach in two weeks’ time.V Anyone wishing to join the Big Bay Nippers can contact contactDiane Craemer on 073 188 0943.
