MEDIA FRENZY: CONGREGATION DRAGGED INTO SPOTLIGHT

    Church disgraced

    ANDR BAKKES

    @andrebakkes

    A

postolic overseer and senior pastor of

the New Direction Grace Church in

    Parow, Peter Barnes, has vehemently

defended the church of any wrongdoing in

the crimes fellow pastor, Colin Davids, are

    being accused of.

While scouring for evidence, the Hawks

apparently raided the church for informa-

tion that could build the case against Plat-

    tekloofs Davids.

Not only did the church play no role in the

    alleged crimes committedbyDavids, accord-

ing to Barnes, but it has also been dragged

into the spotlight by the media.

News of Davids arrest and bail hearing

were widely reported in the national media

    over the last two weeks.

Davids, a New Direction Grace Church

pastor and the director of Platinum Forex

Group (PFG), was released on R100 000 bail

by the Bellville Magistrates Court on

Wednesday 22 June following his arrest by

the Hawks earlier on the day on charges of

contravening the FAIS Act and the Banks

    Act.

Barnes says this is not entirely true.

There was an arrangement between the

authorities and Davids legal team for Da-

vids to come in (go to court) on that day. He

was never picked up. He went to the court

by himself, and theymade sure they brought

him up through the dock that it may look

like he was in jail. They then made sure the

mediawas informed to create amedia frenzy

and tomake it look likeDavidswas arrested.

We knew about everything two weeks prior

to the event, so to us there was no shock,

    he elaborates.

Barnes goes on to defendhis colleague, but

    emphasises cryptically that the ministry

stands next to Davids, not behind him.

Here are the facts: in our three years pri-

or to starting the church and in the seven

months of the existence of the church, weve

never in any church functionmentioned Fo-

rex, or asked anyone to joinForex, or invited

anyone to have a business meeting where

theywere told about Forex. I, inmypersonal

capacity, challenge any of Davids clients (to

say) whether any of them were introduced

to PFG by myself or were in any church

meeting where PFG were promoted, he ex-

plains. The church has, nonetheless, been

    groupedwith thearrest ofDavids, and this

has seen Barnes leap to the defence of the

    church itself.

    ie Groter Tygerberg-vennootskap

    (GTV) in oorlegmet die StadKaapstad

is besig om Stasieweg, ook bekend as

Station ArtCade, in Parow met straatkuns

van plaaslike kunstenaars wat ook interna-

sionaal erkenning verwerf het, as deel van

hul Art in Action-veldtog op te kikker.

Die kunstenaars is: See-Saw-Do aka Ms

Awesome, Ricky Lee Gordon aka Freddy

Sam, Jack Fox (17), Chris Auret (almal van

    Kaapstad), Lwando Lese van Khayelitsha

en Wayne Beukes aka Conform van Mit-

    chells Plain.

Vir jare is Stasiewegbekendvir sy stalle-

tjies deur informele handelaars en die GTV

wil graag die diversiteit van die gemeen-

skap wat daar werk, woon en handeldryf

deur middel van straatkuns uitbeeld. Die

kunstenaars het besluit om deur hul straat-

kuns hul vertolking van die tema Celebra-

ting Diversity Celebrating Our People in

    DieCobblersDen-winkel is eenvandiebe-

    kel. Die eienaar,wyleHariksonNarshi, was

n groot voorstander van die opgradering

van Stasieweg enhet sy gebou semure daar-

voor geskenk. Hy is ongelukkig in Desem-

    ges.

Muurskilderye is n nuwe tendens w-

by die onderskeie restaurante gaan proe. Jy

    nor ges.

    Straatkunstenaars blaas

    nuwe lewe in Stasieweg

See-/Saw-do en Chris Auret se skilderye aan die een kant van die Cobblers Den-gebou.

    FROM PAGE 1

    Theministry reaches out to themargina-

lised in Cape Town and was branded as a

church that uses ministry as a cover-up

to fuel illegal activities, when all we did

was just to simply preach the gospel ... We

were also branded heretical ... being ac-

cused of using the ministry to draw soft

targets to join a Ponzi scheme.

Almost three years before the incep-

tion of the church, when we were still

    functioning as a para-ministry called

    Grace Apostolic Ministry, we already

made a distinct difference between Da-

vids business and the ministry. I men-

tioned it several times that I was in the

business of ministry while Davids was in

    the ministry of business.

Barnes has plenty to say about the char-

ges that were brought against his col-

league, who he reckons is innocent until

    proven guilty.

Davids clients went to a reputable reg-

istered company with an established of-

fice, to an educated businessman who

    holds a business degree fromStellenbosch

    University, who has received several

awards in China and from the UK as one

of the best Forex Traders in Africa. The

    accusations brought against Davids are

    totally baseless and fabricated lies.

He says he finds it strange that authori-

    ties investigated and collected evidence

formore than a year, and after everything

they only charged Davids with contraven-

ing the FAIS Act and the Banks Act.

But the two weightier allegations of

running a Ponzi Scheme andmoney laun-

dering are not on the charge sheet? How

do you explain that? Could it be that after

collecting evidence for an entire year, in-

stead of discovering a can of worms they

discovered a person of colour with a busi-

ness that was meticulously in place and

whose taxes were up to date?

Barnes concludes by saying that the

ministry felt the impact of the severe at-

    tacks and character assassination, but

    they are showing overwhelming unity

    and support for Davids.

God has graced us to navigate through

the storm and we believe that He will vin-

    dicate our innocence.

The arrest of pastor Colin Davids from New

Direction Grace Church has placed the

ministry in a bad light as well. Here he is

    pictured with his wife, Charlyn.

    ANDR BAKKES

    @andrebakkes

    P

arow North much like every suburb

in Cape Town is part of the wander-

    ing bin scratcher route.

To curb the influx of bin scratchers into

the suburb, the Parow North Lower Neigh-

bourhood Watch has taken it upon them-

selves to profile the vagrants coming into

the area on refuse collection day on aThurs-

    day.

Creating awareness in order to ensure

people only put out their bins on the morn-

ing of collection as opposed to the night be-

fore, has already been successful, says the

    watch chairperson, Johan Hume.

There has been a big drop in the number

of bin scratchers to come into the area.

About 80% of the residents adhere to this

    request, he adds.

There is nomagic bullet, however, so peo-

ple still wander into the area, regardless.

On Thursday we guarded the seven en-

trances into the suburb and profiled every

possible bin scratcher that came through.

Just our presence there perturbed some

    from entering, he explains.

The problem, according to Hume and Par-

    ow Community Policing Forum (CPF)

    chairperson, Roger Cannon, is two-fold.

A possible criminal element entering the

suburb does exist, and also the aftermath of

some of the messier vagrants is clear to see

    the next day.

The suburb looks terrible on aMonday,

says Hume before adding that some of the

bin scratchers will use the street as a toilet.

Cannon says despite an improvement in

the number of people who put their bins out

on the day of collection, too many still ig-

    nore this request.

Our residents need to be more responsi-

ble and know that vagrants are lured into

the area on these days. The area is filthy the

next day, because some empty a bin and

dont even put the garbage back into the bin.

    Some comewith five-litre liquor containers

and leave it around for all to see. Some even

bury these bottles in a park so that they can

retrieve it the next week, he says.

Some residents give them food, but just

the other day a vagrant stole the phone of

a woman who always gives him food, so

some bin scratchers simply cannot be trust-

    ed.

Hume says the first of their bin ops last

week Thursday will certainly not be the

    last.

We want to build up a database of va-

grants who move around in the suburb and

were well under way, he concludes.

Some of the bin scratchers in Parow North

leave a trail of garbage in their wake.

    ANDR BAKKES

    @andrebakkes

The hunter and the hunted need to evolve

    together.

    With criminals now targeting aluminium

widows as entry point into houses, potential

victims need to make it as hard as possible

for the felon to exploit the inherent weak-

    ness in these popular windows.

With a blunt screwdriver it apparently

takes them just a few seconds to remove

    your window.

    So reckons Panorama, Welgelegen and

    Plattekloof (PWP) Watchs Hannes Rud-

man, who has been part of a team that is

driving awareness around this subject in

these suburbs. This type of window is, how-

ever, a popular choice all over Cape Town,

so their message is desperately needed.

And judging by the amount of times the

post has been viewed on PWPWatchs Face-

bookpage, it is clear that thepublic is taking

    their warning seriously.

In just one evening the post views went

    from 1000 to 20 000, says Rudman.

    Aluminium windows have certain ad-

vantages, such as the ease of installation

and the possible benefits that go with hav-

ing thicker glass, but keeping unwanted ele-

ments out is not one of them.

    To exacerbatematters,manyof thesewin-

dows are only protected by security bars on

the pane that opens, and not on the adjacent

    larger panes.

A spokesperson for Bothasig police, War-

rant Officer Jacques Mostert, says house-

breakings have been rising, which is con-

    cerning.

He also admits that the issue surrounding

aluminium windows is a much wider prob-

lem than just Bothasig and surrounds.

Where it is financially possible, home

owners need to upgrade their alarm system.

It will not suffice if your alarmworks on the

concept that it will go off if someone opens

awindow, because the intruder removes the

entire panel without ever actually opening

the window. Security beams or eyes that

pick upmovement aremore efficient in this

    regard, he explains.

Mostert adds that if one has been the vic-

    timof someoneusing thismethod, then they

should be careful when handling the pane

of glass that has been removed.

Sometimes the intruder will take the

window glass with them so that we cant get

fingerprints. But sometimes they leave it

somewhere on the property. In such a sce-

nario the owner needs to handle the glass

very carefully, ensuring that they dont con-

taminate the fingerprints. They should also

make sure it doesnt lie in the rain.

Mostert says when replacing the glass, it

is best to have it done with silicone, which

is much more difficult to remove.

In essence, ensure that youre not the

    softest target in the street.

by verskeie punte afgelewerword as deel

van MES se Winterhoop-veldtog wat op

1 Junie begin het. In Bellville kan jy dit

by MES se kantoor in Daviesstraat gaan

    aflewer.

    Volgens Clarina Hanekom, woord-

voerder van MES, is die Winterhoop-

veldtog 16 jaar gelede van stapel gestuur

om die publiek aan temoedig omwinter-

klere en nie-bederfbare kos vir die min-

    derbevoorregtes gedurende die winter-

    maande in te samel.

Klere in n goeie toestand sooswinter-

    jasse, handskoene, serpe en onderklere

maak n groot verskil in n straatmens se

lewe.

    Dieuitreikveldtog iswaaroordieMES-

    persoon voer n onderhoudmet diemaat-

die persoon verwys vir n tweede onder-

    Sodra die persoon die innamefase

deurgegaan het, word hy/sy weer deur

    n multi-dissiplinre span gevalueer,

waarna n omgee-plan in oorleg met die

    persoon saamgestel word.

MES stel dan n individuele ontwik-

kelingsplan (IOP) op om seker te maak

dat die omgee-plan uitgevoer word. Die

persoon word dan daarna na die verskil-

lende dienste in die organisasie verwys

as deel van die intervensie-fase van die

model.

    skenking moontlik gemaak danksy kom-

berse wat deur Foschini se vervaardigings-

    arm, Prestige Clothing, gemaak is.

Foschini se leuse is: Om goed te doen,

sal nooit uit die mode raak nie. En by Pres-

tige Clothing, word werkloses opgelei en

    nuwe vaardighede aangeleer.

me R350 000 ingesamel.

Daarna

word die gesnyde komberse vervoer na Ca-

ledon Prestige, waar dit aanmekaar gestik

word deur diegene wat opgelei word om

komberse te vervaardig. Sodra die kom-

bers vervaardig is,word dit by die organisa-

sie Gift of the Givers afgelewer en hulle ver-

getref is.

    T

he City of Cape Town has allocated

about R350 million in the 2016/17 fi-

    nancial year for infrastructure pro-

jects in the Voortrekker Road Corridor

(VRC) as part of its ongoing efforts to revi-

    talise this substantial area.

The infrastructure and public space up-

grade projects, some of which are already

underway, include R51 million for the Oak-

dale Main Substation (Phase 2), R65 million

    for the Bellville Wastewater Treatment

Works Facility, R5 million for the upgrade

of the Bellville Public Transport Inter-

change, R2million for CCTV installation in

Goodwood, R4.5 million for the Maitland

Cemetery upgrade, and R2 million for the

    Elsieskraal River upgrade (from Elizabeth

    Park to Jack Muller Park).

This investment is over and above the

normal City funded service delivery alloca-

tions to this areaandaims to improveurban

conditions and to unlock a range of invest-

    ment opportunities in future.

The core belief that underpins our ef-

forts in this important part of our metro is

that strategic public spending will encour-

    age further development and investment

    fromtheprivate sector, saysJohanvander

    Merwe,Maycomember for energy, environ-

    mental and spatial planning.

Our targeted investment drive in infra-

structure and public space upgrades aims

not only to lay a solid and attractive founda-

tion for further private sector investment,

but also shows our commitment to enhanc-

ing the second largest central business dis-

trict area in the metro and its surrounds.

Only through the strong partnerships that

we are seeing in this corridor will we truly

reach the catalytic change that we are envi-

    sioning for this zone.

    The Integrated City Development Grant,

which is being used to fund this large-scale

    investment, provides the eight metropoli-

tan municipalities with incentives to im-

    prove spatial development considerations

in their budgeting in support of integrated,

inclusive development that is public trans-

port oriented. To qualify for this grant fund-

ing, cities are required to identify integra-

tion zones in which the funding is due to be

spent. The Metro South-East and the VRC

have been the two nominated regions with-

    in Cape Town.

The first phase of infrastructure up-

grades, as part of this grant, commenced in

the 2014/15 financial year with projects

such as the water and sanitation depart-

ments northern region sludge facility and

    the electricity services departments Plat-

    tekloof N1 substation reinforcement.

Our efforts here would not be half as ef-

fective without the cooperation of resi-

dents, our community partners, and the

    Greater Tygerberg Partnership, which is

    key in facilitating relationships between

small and medium businesses and the pub-

lic sector, and the Voortrekker Road Cen-

    tral Improvement District (VRCID). The

    Mayoral Urban Regeneration Programme

is also an active lever for our revitalisation

efforts in this area, says Van der Merwe.

This is not a theoretical exercise. Re-

sults are being seen, he adds.

The City of Cape Town has ac-

quired 32 baby simulators for use

as part of the its substance abuse

    programme in schools.

    The programme forms part of

    theCitys social development and

    early childhood development di-

    rectorate substance abuse pro-

    gramme for children.

    Citys Mayco member council-

lor Suzette Little, says the direct-

    orate started the acquisition

process in 2015 and took delivery

of the simulators a few months

    ago.

Little says each of its eight dis-

    tricts will receive four simula-

    tors including a healthy baby

    simulator, substance abuse ad-

    diction simulator, foetal alcohol

    syndrome simulator, and a

    shakenbaby syndrome simula-

    tor.

The simulators are able to il-

    lustrate quite vividly the impact

    of substance abuse during preg-

nancy and the effects of child

abuse as well as the fact that par-

enting is no walk in the park,

    she says.

    It is an unconventional meth-

od, but a pilot project last year

showed that it works, she adds.

Little says the City has various

    programmes in place designed to

    address substance abuse, focus-

    ing on suppression through en-

forcement by the safety and secu-

    rity directorate, intervention

    through treatment by City

    health, and prevention which is

the responsibility of the social de-

    velopment and early childhood

    development directorate.

The key projects in the direct-

    orates Substance Abuse Pro-

    gramme foster inter-personal

    and intra-personal skills for pri-

mary schools learners with a fo-

    cus on emotional intelligence,

    communication skills, self-es-

teem, respect for others, and how

to handle peer pressure and bul-

    lying, she says.

Elke week is so besig soos

    die vorige een by Tyger-

    berg-dienssentrum vir be-

    jaardes en mobiele etes,

    maar dit voel nietemin as-

    of hulle di afgelope week

    of twee buitengewoon be-

    drywig was.

    Die eerste van die orga-

    nisasie sewinter-Kersetes

    is in Bellville-Suid gehou.

    Toe het twee oud-Tyger-

    berg-kinderkoorlede na

    die sentrumgekomomdie

    bejaardes te vermaak.

    Laastens het n groot getal

    egpare wat nou al langer

as 50 jaar getroud is, saamgetrek vir

    fotos.

Die seniors is n voorbeeld vir

    ons jongmense, s LindaLouw, die

    organisasie se bestuurder.

Toe hulle gevra is wat die resep

vir n suksesvolle huwelik is, was

    die antwoorde kordaat en reguit:

    Ons is nog steeds verlief opmekaar;

    ons het saam n belofte gemaak;

jonger geslag! Die sentrum is so

    trots om sulke voorbeeldige men-

    tors te kan h.

Tydens die geleentheid om eer te

bring aan hierdie egpare het gaste

sommer ook die oudste lid van die

sentrum, Thea Koch, se 98ste ver-

    jaardag gevier.

    s.

    Voorts het die sentrumse grootste

    voedingsprojek in n behoeftige

area vlot verloop toe 510 winter-

Kersetes deur agt senior lede opge-

skep en in houers verpak is.

    Daar was groot opgewondenheid

onder hierdie bejaardes met die op-

skep van die etes, want almal het

uitgesien om dit self aan behoeftige

    bejaardes en kinders by Proteaville

    stuur vinnig ander relings tref.

stuur het weer eens besef hoe be-

voorreg hulle is om so n gemeen-

    skapsuitreikprojek van stapel te

    stuur, s Louw.

    LOUISA STEYL

    @lousteyl

    T

wo music fans have started a

    new project which they hope

    might revolutionise the South

    African live music industry.

    Inspired by an American crowd-

    funding campaign, SeaPoints Rich-

    ard Theunissen and Stuart Walsh

    from Parklands recently launched

    their website Inbound Sound.

In a nutshell the website gives

music fans the opportunity to re-

quest the artists they want to see

    live in their city.

Stuart and I are big fans of the

    Foo Fighters, Richard explains.

We got wind of a concert that was

    crowdfunded in America two years

ago and that was before it was an-

nounced that they would be coming

    to South Africa.

At that stage, crowd funding was

    still a relativelynewconcept, andal-

though its grown generally on a

global scale, Richard points out that

its still relatively new in SA.

People are a little sceptical. Gen-

erally the first question they ask is:

Why do we need to give our money

    away first?, and its understanda-

    ble.

Richard explains that he and Stu-

art see their role in the industry as

educators on the benefits of crowd-

    funding while empowering fans to

    make concerts happen. He says

many music fans seem to be frus-

trated with not being able to see

    their favourite acts live.

Inbound Sound allows fans to re-

quest a concert by any artists,

across genres, whether they are lo-

    cal or international, commercial or

    lesser-known.

Once a concert has been request-

    ed, Richard and Stuart, working

    with industry insiders, calculate

how much would need to be raised

to set the concert up and the show

is opened to pledges from other fans

who may also want to see the show.

    Fanswho pledge a contribution to

    the concert have essentially already

    bought their tickets and once

    enough funds have

    been raised, Rich-

    ard and Stuart will

    work with promo-

    tors to bring the act

    to local shores. We

    are basically just

    providing the plat-

    form.

    Should they not

    be able to raise the

    funds needed, fans

will be able to get a

    full refund, making

    sure they dont pay

    for a show they

    wont see.

    The feedback

    weve received [so

    far] has been phe-

    nomenal, and thats

    very encouraging were on to

    something that people want.

While many of the shows already

requested on the website are for in-

    ternational acts, Richard says:

Were big on local music. In fact,

    theyre hoping their first success

story will be staging a show for a

local act. The local music scene,

both mainstream and niche, is mas-

sive, and we want to tap into that.

The duo are already in talks with

local artists and while Richard says

itmay take a couple ofmonths to get

the first concert off the ground,

once that first concert has hap-

pened, its basically going to revolu-

tionise where and when artists play

    locally.

    Because they are dealing with

    other peoples money, Stuart and

Richard were very focused on mak-

    ing sure that everythingwas above

board and as transparent and open

as possible when they created the

    website.

    Users need to log

    in on the site be-

    fore making pledg-

    es and Richard as-

    sures that shows

    wont be left on a

    site indefinitely. If

    a proposed concert

    hasnt gained mo-

    mentum after a

    fewmonths, theyll

    take the show off

    and refund the us-

    ers who have

    pledged. Users can

    also request a re-

    fund at any point,

    should their per-

    sonal financial sit-

    uation changes.

    Were not look-

    ing to take advantage.

    Richard also stresses that In-

bound Sounds core function is to be

a crowdfunding site. They want to

    work with promotors and venues,

but have no aspirations of taking

    over their roles.

    Inbound Sounds role rather, is

giving fans a voice and a choice.

    Historically theyve never had a

say, he says of the acts who travel

to South Africa. All you need is a

lot of people with the same idea.

Sound, to request a concert, or to see

    The first Via Afrika Tabtor

    Maths eLearning Centre

opened its doors at the Cob-

    ble Walk Shopping Centre

    in Durbanville.

    TabtorMaths has been in

    partnership with educa-

    tional publishers Via Afri-

    ka tomake its unique tutor-

    ing technology on tablets

    available locally for stu-

dents from grades R to six.

    The opening of the Cobble

    Walk facility gives learners

    who do not otherwise have

    access to tablets the oppor-

    tunity to benefit from this

    technology.

    At the launch event held

    on Thursday 30 June Mich-

    ael Goodman, the acting

    CEO of Via Afrika ex-

    pressed the need to address

    the Information and Com-

    munications Technology

    divide in South Africa.

    The founder and CEO of

    Tabtor, Raj Valli, said he

was in the business of GDP

    creation and without ed-

    ucation society cannot

    achieve economic prosperi-

    ty and sustainability.

With Tabtor, we see a 50% im-

    provement in learning speed and

a 65% improvement in answer ac-

    curacy.

The feature that makes this app

unique is that there is a real tutor

available for every child to work

with on a one-to-one basis on the

    tablet. The tutors review, mark

    and provide customised feedback

    for every maths worksheet the

child completes. The first step in

the process is for the child to com-

    plete a diagnostic assessment

    whereby their skills will be

    matched to the appropriate maths

    level. The specialist tutors

    many are retired teachers

    with a wealth of experience

    are then able to structure

    maths assignments to the

    individual child.

    While the child solves the

    maths problems on the tab-

let with their finger or sty-

    lus, the digital paper tech-

    nology tracks each stroke

    and even calculates the

    time spent on each task.

    Since the tutors can actual-

ly see each step when they

    mark the work, they can

    provide valuable individu-

    al feedback. This in-depth

    analysis allows the tutors

    to understand where a

    learner may be struggling

    and needs intervention.

    Worksheets contain vid-

    eo tutorials to develop con-

    cepts, and tutors can pro-

    vide personalised videos

    and voice messages to take

    understanding further.

    Tutors personally mark

    and review each maths

    worksheet within 24 hours

    of receiving it, and parents

    receive a weekly report to

    monitor their childs

    progress. In addition to

worksheets, there are tests at ap-

    propriate milestones to confirm

    understanding of the mathemati-

    cal concepts before learners move

    on to new material.

    LEWENSKIEKIE

    Insekte keer

    dat ek verskil

    konmaak

    Hope springs eternal.

    Hierdie Alexander Pope-aanhaling het

onlangs by my opgekom toe die ouens

wat my beroof het, binne dae vasgetrek

is.

as n toeskouer. Iemand wat van buite

inkyk en die situasie net op sigwaarde

    beoordeel.

    Die spoed waarmee my aanvallers

baas sal waai. Dat ons belerde president

    die leisels sal

    neerl as hy nog n

    greintjie integriteit

    oor het.

    Ek het begin glo

    dat die Springbok-

    ke soos die Lions,

    en beter nog, soos

    die Nieu-Seelanders

    sal begin rugby

    speel. Dat hulle

    kan pass en skop

    en tkkel.

    Daarna het ek

    begin glo dat my

skoot praat. My geloof was so sterk dat

saamleef, moet h.

uitken. Die eerste keer kon ek nie gaan

nie, want alle speurders het rusdae

gehad. Die volgende keer was hulle by n

afskeid van n kollega. n Ander keer is

die speurkantore met gif bespuit om

insekte te dood. Hoeveel ander mense het

nie intussen slagoffers van di gewetenlo-

se misdadigers geword nie, terwyl ek

hulle kon uitken? Ek is nie belangriker

    kry.

    Nobody can deny that

    alcoholism has reached

    epidemic proportions not

only in SA, but all over the

    world.

    The amount of man hours

lost to business due to not

pitching up for work on a

    Monday being sick is huge

and 99% of the people are

    suffering from hangovers.

    Kids are not being moni-

tored anymore as to the age

    they are served alcohol.

    Death on the roads has

    reached peak limits due to

    drinking and driving.

I think this thing at pubs

    and bars offering a happy

hour where for an hour or

    so, you can benefit from

    drinks being ordered at half

    price, is despicable. Patrons

down as much as they can in

    the shortest possible time,

    then go onto the roads.

    Where are the cops to

    catch these people before

    they start driving?

    They know that they are

    doing this at these public

    houses where drinking is

    rampant.

    To be inebriated is now

    considered cool! No thought

    is given to consequences at

    all.

If you drink, stay at home

and go to bed in your own

    home, or phone Uber!

    morning peak hour traffic

    between 6:00 and 7:00, several

    taxis are skipping the two-

lane traffic and go driving on

    the pavement for pedestrians

    down Blaauwberg Road to

    Koeberg Road.

    We saw pedestrians having

to step aside for a taxi one

    rassisme, in al

    sy vorme, kan

    uitgeroeiword

    ing appointments, the time

you need to be at the facility,

    at which window you need

    to drop your yellow card.

For a while, it felt like no one

quite knew who to direct me

    to, but that was resolved.

On a certain day, while I

    was waiting at the administra-

    tion desk, Malicka started

    searching through page after

    page of appointments for the

    doctor, scheduled for that day.

    For a brief moment, I had a

    glimpse of the workload that

    the doctor at Parow Commu-

    nity Health Clinic (Doctor

    Muhammed) was subjected to,

    and I developed respect for

    the other health care profes-

sionals at the facility as well.

    Considering the number of

    patients who receive treat-

ment at the facility, I think

    Doctor Muhammed is highly

    competent, knowledgeable,

and well versed in her field.

On one occasion, when I was

the last person to be treated

for the day, she conducted a

    thorough examination before

    making any diagnosis regard-

ing an infection I had in my

    throat.

    While I was waiting, near

    the section where mothers sat

    with their babies, it was

refreshing to listen to one of

    the nurses, expressing her

desire to give the best medical

    treatment to the babies, when

    she remarked, each life

    matters. Those words echoed

    throughout the day. She

    recounted how she catches

    bullets and how God keeps

her, since she lives in an area

    that has been affected by

    violence.

    There were very unsettling

    moments too, and the stark

    reality of the unhealthy

    dependency on medication,

    and also the helplessness of

    people whose health had

    deteriorated to such a meas-

    ure that it affected their

    physical appearance.

    I do not necessarily agree

    with every single diagnosis

    made, and every prescription,

    administered by health care

    professionals, because all the

    years of medical training

    have not immunised any

    sister/nurse/doctor against

    making a misdiagnosis.

    They are people too, who

    are capable of making errors.

    The health care professionals

    at our day hospitals/clinics

    experience great levels of

    pressure and strain, at times,

and thus I think that every

    patient needs to try to

    become knowledgeable about

    the type of medication that

    has been prescribed to them,

to the measure that it is

    possible, and not solely rely

    on a prognosis.

    Many people know what it

is like to be the patient, but

only a few know what it is

like to be the doctor or nurse.

    Despite the reports of poor

    health administration that

    still travel down the hallways

of day hospitals, I think we

    still need to respect the

    sacrifice of our health care

    professionals.

    Yes, there were moments of

    gloom and doom at Parow

    Community Health Centre/

    Clinic, but the music that

played the loudest in my ears

at this facility, was pomp and

    praise!

    Swift Redemption

    LOUISA STEYL

    @lousteyl

    W

hat do you get when you put a group

    of musicians from vastly different

    musical genres together in one

    band?

The answer is northern suburbs A Swift

Redemption who describe their music as

    post-grunge alternative rock. Add pro-

gressive guitar riffs and a violin and youll

find a sound reminiscent of early 2000s

bands like Seether, Fuel and System of a

    Down, yet still unique.

ASwift Redemption got their start in early

    2015 after frontman Stephen Brink-Jones

wrote a song Stand Alone as a tribute to

his brother Michael, who passed away the

year before. Stephen, who has played for a

few local metal bands, realised that he had

a lot of his own material that hed simply

never played before. He always pushed me

to play my music, he says of his brother.

So, with this inmind, he put out a call to find

musicians for anewband. Facebook is your

    friend, he jokes.

    JoinedbyEmileMaritz on lead guitar, Tri-

cia Theunissen on violin, Cole Grainger on

drums and Christo Bester on bass, A Swift

Redemption set about recording their first

album in October, before playing their first

    show in Durbanville in November.

Nostalgia, their 10-track release, was re-

corded and produced by Ruan Jordaan of lo-

cal metal band Megalodon and released in

    April this year.

Based on his experiences with previous

bands, Stephen explains that this time

round he wanted to have a product to offer

before they started seriously performing. I

thought that it would be a better idea to have

people actually know what you sound like

before they just come out to see you.

A lot of people, if they really like a song,

they are going to come to a show in anticipa-

tion of that song, he continues, before Tri-

cia adds: And sing along, which is some-

thing theyve experienced at their gigs late-

    ly.

    Christo describes Nostalgia as pretty

    mucheveryadjectiveyoucan thinkof, add-

ing that fans have said they enjoy the diver-

sity of their sound. Tricias violin adds a

unique twist to their brand of rock.

Since releasing Nostalgia, they have been

trying to advertise the band and gig asmuch

    as possible.

Theyve released a music video for the

song Save me some while some of their

music has been playlisted on MFM 92.6 and

    Zone Radio.

Its nice that the album is out; the hard

work is done, Cole says: Now its basically

    just having fun.

He points out that the band has only really

played venues in Durbanville, Bellville and

Observatory so far. We havent really cov-

ered the Western Cape, which is something

    we want to do.

Theyll addanewvenue to their list onSat-

urday (9 July) when they share the stage

with Verona Walls and Dustland Express
