There’s more comfort for victims of crimein Delft with the re-launch of the VictimSupport Room at the police station.

Last week the community celebrated theopening of the facility that was revampedwith the help of the local Spar franchise.

Claudia Michel, HR manager for Spar inthe Western Cape, said that the relaunch ofthe facility was part of their commitment tofight crime in all their areas.

“We are encouraging all our stores toform these partnerships with police sta-tions and with Business Against Crime tomake our communities safer,” she said.

MEC from the Department of Social De-velopment, Albert Fritz, delivered the key-note address and said that this relaunch wasan example of the good that the police weredoing in partnerships with business and thecommunity.

“We must never forget that the victims ofcrime need care and comfort during theirtime of need, and facilities like these makea huge difference as part of the healing proc-ess.

“While we continue to fight against crimethis is where we start helping the victim, and the volunteers who offer their servicesto be here must be commended for the fan-tastic work they do in that process.”

Station commander, Brig Hendrik Jansenwas also on hand to point out various anti-crime exercises that were happening in thecommunity.

As part of their “Take Back” strategy todeal with crime, drugs and gangs, they host-ed a walkabout in the area last week.

“We received several requests from thecommunity in Delft South, and they alsowant us to embark on a name and shamecampaign to be started in the area,” he said.

“We were joined by members of the com-munity, the community police forum andneighbourhood watches, and went to sevenhouses that were identified in the area.

“One such outlet was a well-known drugoutlet called ‘Casablanca’ in Wallace Streetwhere several successful seizures have al-ready been executed, but even after arrests

the business just gets taken over by some-body else.

“During this exercise six suspects, agedbetween 17 and 40, were arrested for the ille-gal possession of drugs.

“We will not stop until we get rid of allthese drug houses, and we can only do thatwith the help of the public.”V Jansen want the public to know that they can forward information of where illegal drugs are storedor sold, via his personal confidential SMS hotline at079 494 1352.

There’s a call for the community to stayawake against crime.

On Friday members of the RavensmeadUitsig Cravenby Development Initiative(RUCdi), will be gathering at the derelictstructure that used to be Florida Primaryfor a vigil against crime in the area.

Erica Jacobs of the organisation said thatover the last two months they have em-barked on an enquiry with various govern-ment departments regarding this derelictbuilding.

“We are in conversation with the Pre-mier’s office and the Department of PublicWorks regarding its current misuse, possi-ble restoration of the structure and thatRUCdi (in memory of the school’s legacy)would like to initiate a Public-Private Part-nership in the form of a skills developmentcentre for youth empowerment,” she said.

On Friday, in collaboration with churchleaders they will host the vigil from 18:00until 06:00 on Saturday.

She added that church and youth leaderswill preside over the vigil.

The main aims of this exercise are to ig-nite community engagement and unitevoices of active citizens against crime in thearea.

“We want to send a message to gangs thatwe will no longer tolerate their destructionof young lives,” added Jacobs.

“During this vigil we want to keep thebuilding crime-free, even if only for 12hours, as a symbolic gesture of possibility, and we want to support the neighboursaround the school building against the con-stant torment that has become part of theirdaily lives.”

In the event of rain the vigil will use thehalls of the Anglican and Hollandse Inde-pendent Churches, two vantage points op-posite the abandoned building.

The intention is to convene a peacefulgathering, engage participants in commu-nity building activities and reconnect withvalues and morals that will strengthen thecommunity.

During the programme theywillwalk theschool perimeter and form a human chainaround the building.

“We have secured the support from anumber of stakeholders, the Ministers Fra-ternal and youth leaders will preside overthe programme while SAPS, CPF andNeighbourhoodWatchwill assistwith secu-rity and other resources,” concludedJacobs.V Further information from Erica Jacobs on 082 7410254 or email [email protected].

Boer saam vir topwyne

Groenland se drie geslagte Kosie, Piet en Jacobus Steenkamp in die wingerd. FOTO: CARINA ROUX

A number of FreeCall lines have been in-stalled across the city to bring municipalservices closer to residents, no matter whe-re they live.

Most importantly, during the winter sea-son, these lines also make it easier for com-munities to contact the City of Cape Townto report any faults.

The city has installed 67 FreeCall lines inoutlying areas and disadvantaged commu-nities. A further 20 lines are set to be con-nected by the end of July.

Many informal settlements, including so-mewhere there is hardly any telecommuni-cations infrastructure, will benefit fromthese new lines.

“We are extending the network of Free-

Call telephones to areas where low volumesof service complaints and requests are cur-rently being registered because of a lack oflandlines or cellphone airtime on the partof residents,” says the City’s mayoral com-mittee member for corporate services, De-metri Qually.

The FreeCall lines can be used to contactthe city for various enquiries and servicerequests such as illegal dumping, water le-aks, sewer blockages, refuse collection, street lights that are out, pot holes, damagedroads and account enquiries X the calls arefree of charge.”V Call the City’s helpline centre on 0860 103 089 forflooding or SMS (maximum 160 characters) to31220 for more information.

N-N-Nine for Easter RoversTHOMAS CAROLUS

Eastern Rovers climbed the Northern Sub-urbs Football Association Super League ta-ble into number 9 on the log when they beatRiverside Rangers 2-1, at Avonwood Parkon Saturday afternoon.

Rheys De Beer, the Eastern Rovers goal-keeper, pulled off an impressive display ingoals but neither team could find thematch-winner they were looking for as eachteam was denied by the crossbar too.

The visitors from Matroosfontein wereeager to make the top eight , and knew theywere up against it, especially against ahighly confident Riverside Rangers side.

On the other hand , the host were still inthe running for the Super League title andthey were looking to keep that mathemati-cal chance alive by defeating Eastern Rov-ers.

Gerswin Joseph gave Eastern Rovers thelead before the break and he doubled the

lead midway through the second half beforePierre Swartz scored for the home team.

Riverside Rangers created the first sig-nificant attack on goal. Kyle Mentoorstruck an effort from 20 yards, and it flewwell off goal, not troubling De Beer in be-tween the sticks.

Some great combination play by River-side Rangers saw William Jacobs frustrat-ingly denied by the crossbar. His shot rat-tled the frame of the goal to drop down ontothe goal-line before bouncing away fromthe net.

Riverside Rangers had a chance straightafter the restart when Mentoor worked hisway into the box with the ball, only for adefender to pull off a solid defensive displayto steer him away from goal and put the ballout for a corner.

A large portion of the second half fell intoa dull affair as both sets of players lookedto have run out of steam and ideas to geta goal.

Anything for possession

SAREL BURGER
