COMMUNICATION: ‘CHANNELS OPEN’
City ‘working for you’A total of 71 % of all faults logged with the City of Cape
Town over the festive season were resolved within 14days despite reduced staff over the festive season.
“The remainder of complaints, which include more com-plex faults, are being attended to as a matter of urgency bystaff working overtime,” said mayoral committee memberfor corporate services Demetri Qually.Cape Townhas numerous channels of communication that
residents can use to contact the city in order to report servicedelivery faults.
SMS or emailWhile there is one call centre number, residents may be
redirected to the corporate call centre, the electricity techni-cal operations centre or the water technical operations cen-tre depending on the nature of their request.During peak times residents also have the option of send-
ing an SMS or an email to the technical operations centreconcerned, with their service request. This is especiallyhelp-ful in the case of electricity outages and burst water pipesas the request is logged by an agent on behalf of the residentand routed directly to the correct department saving resi-dents valuable time and money.
Reference numberAutomatedmessages are also placed on the system inform-
ing residents of electricity outages around the citywhich arebeing addressed by council staff. When customers contact the call centre, they are given the
option of receiving a reference number via SMS or email. This option makes it more convenient for them to keep thereference number so that they can followup on any outstand-ing service requests.Useful Contacts:V Call Centre 0860 103089. This number can be used for
all service requests relating to solidwaste, electricity, water,roads and stormwater and parks. The number can also beused for all accounts and general enquiries such as motorvehicle registration and traffic fines;
V SMS 31220 for all electricity service faults;V SMS 31373 for water and sewer service faults (other serv-
ice requests are accepted);V Email [email protected] to report all service
faults;V Email [email protected] to report electricity serv-
ice faults;V Email [email protected] to report water and
sewerage faults;V Log onto www.capetown.gov.za; choose the “service re-
quests” option on the left hand side of the screen. Follow theprompts;
V The city has installed smartcape access computers in li-braries and other walk-in centres throughout the city. Resi-dents can use these computers to contact the city.

Plan gaan informele sektor ordenJANA BEKKER
Dié informele handelsplan, tans in dieontwikkelingsfase, is ’n Stad Kaapstad-ini-siatief.
James Vos, De Grendel se subraadvoorsit-ter, sê dié verwikkeling volg omdat informe-le handelaars verspreid was oor dele vanPlattekloof, Edgemead en ander gebiede.
Bly of gly?
Hulle maak ’n lewe so.
. . moet hullebly of moet hulle gly?
Patrick Meyer: Diswel onwettig kanmense sê, maarhoe anders gaanhulle ’n inkomsteverdien.

The response to the Animal Anti-CrueltyLeague’s Christmas stocking appeal at theend of 2012 was a big success, thanks to peo-ple’s kind hearts.
Adoption staff of this animalwelfare organ-isation requested the public to donate toys, chews and treats for the shelter dogs and cats,as part of a project.
“As the public holidays are long and lonelyfor the animals andmany of themhave neverhad anything nice in their lives, the idea wasto give each animal a stocking with a toy anda treat. The idea originated from our adop-tions officerHelen Sadler’s daughter Caitlyn,
after she was involved in a Santa shoeboxproject at her school,” said Alma Schaap.
“We are delighted to report that the re-sponse was extremely positive. Not only didwe receive the toys and treats asked for, butmany other items such as food and collarsand leads. Many groups of friends and col-leagues stood together to raise funds andgather goods for us,” Alma and Helen said.
They thanked everyone involved, express-ing their heartfelt thanks for contributions, big or small.
“This year Christmas was special here,”Alma said.

Chronic diseases, also known as non-com-municable diseases, may be inherited, butmany lifestyle and environmental factorssuch as smoking, inappropriate diet, lackof exercise and heavy alcohol consumptionare known to significantly increase risks.
They can be prevented and controlledthrough lifestyle changes, a media releaseof the Western Cape Department of Health, reads.
Some of the most common chronic ill-nesses are hypertension (high blood pres-sure), diabetes and heart disease.
Due to the lack of initial symptoms, andbecause patients do not have regular, vol-untary health checks, many patients withchronic diseases seekhelp only once chron-ic diseases have reached an acute stage, orthe disease has long-term complications.
Treating an illness once it has reachedthis stage is not only expensive but also de-nies people the benefits of taking care oftheir condition at an early stage or prevent-ing further complications altogether.
The major associated risk factors forthese chronic diseases are high blood pres-sure, high blood cholesterol, diabetes, andobesity.

to the Two Oceans Aquarium.Aquarium curator Michael Farquhar at-
tributed the occurrence to weather condi-tions. “The strong south-easterly winds wehave been experiencing recently result inupwellings of icy cold water off our westcoast. Slender sunfish are a tropical speciesand prefer temperate conditions.
“The reason for them washing ashore isprobably because they are trapped and can-not function in the coldwater,” Farquhar ex-plained in an article on the aquarium’s web-page.
On Monday the aquarium’s operationsmanager Tinus Beukes confirmed this as apossible reason for the recent incidents ofwashed up sunfish.
“The problem is that these species of sun-fish school together, so if you come acrossone on shore, it is not a good sign.
“This is a tropical fish and shouldn’t evenbe in these waters,” he said.V Any incidents of washed up slender sunfish canbe reported to Tinus Beukes via tbeukes@aquarium.co.za.

An avid photographer was thoroughly puz-zled by a exotic fish she found on Milnertonbeach recently.
Rika van Rensburg from Brackenfell andher 11-year-old grandson Dagan happenedon this strange-looking fish during an out-ing on 19 December.
“The fish seemed to be stranded in theshallow water and my grandson helped itback towards deeper waters. It however keptbeing washed back onto the beach,” Rikasaid.
“It was the first time I had seen such a fish.“At first I thought it was a fish that had
been bitten in half but then I noticed thestrange tail with the little fins,” she said add-ing that the total length of the fish was about50 cm.
The fish is a slender sunfish (Ranzania lae-vis) which grows to a length of about 80 cm.
InFebruary 2011 several incidents of thesefish washing up along the beaches of Blou-berg,Melkbos andNoordhoekwere reported

Watch out for newcomputer scamA recent computer scam hassurfaced, and the public isurged to be vigilant when ap-proached by such scams.
Earlier this month Tyger-Burger received a tip-offfrom one of its readers whohad come across a similar in-cident.
Kraaifontein resident, Eri-ka Vermeulen was contactedtelephonically on 2 Januaryby an unidentified woman, apparently phoning from oron behalf of the Microsoftcompany, reporting that hercomputer contained mali-cious ware.
ErrorsThe woman, who accord-
ing to Vermeulen was of Indi-an descent, pried about vari-ous personal details and in-structed her to switch on hercomputer.
“I could hear that the ladywas from India, as I just livedthere for a year and eventhough she tried to disguiseher accent I could hear she’sfrom India.”
After switching off hercomputer, it was to the bene-fit of Vermeulen, who had aninkling that the phone callwas in fact not from a genu-ine Microsoft representa-tive.
“She was very patient andI had to go into ‘My Compu-ter’ and click on ‘System’ andsome other things and itopened a window showingsome errors and warnings.”
Vermeulen was told thather computer had been in-fected by a Malaysian
Bourne virus and was in acritical state.
Antivirus“(So), I told her that I have
an anti-virus programmeand she said that my anti-vi-rus won’t detect this new vi-rus and my whole PC cancrash at any moment.
“I then started to pretendto be very stupid and said Ihave to go to an urgent meet-ing and won’t be able to do allthis right now and she gotvery irritated and said thatshe will call me back the nextday.”
It was Vermeulen’s will tohang up the phone, and hertravel knowledge, which ledher to do her own researchwith the help of Google. Shefound websites warning ofthis scam thathas beengoingon for a few years mainly inthe United States and Eu-rope; seemingly theyarenowtrying to target South Afri-cans.
VulnerableApparently after down-
loading and running a pro-gramme, chosen by the “rep-resentatives” this will givethem full access to one’s com-puter, making personal in-formation such as bankinginformation passwords vul-nerable.
Reader’s should be alertwhen receiving similarphone calls from representa-tives saying that they are atechnical support personfrom Microsoft or any othermajor IT company.

is daarom weer as wenners oordie eindstreep.
The dramatic new route of the 10th editionof the Absa Cape Epic, which takes placefrom 17 to 24 March this year, will be aschallenging as previous years. Both local and international mountain
biking enthusiasts will be taking on the de-manding eight day mountain bike adven-ture of 698 km with 15 650 m of climbingfrom Meerendal wine estate to Lourens-
ford.The route, which changes considerably
each year, will lead 1 200 participating cy-clists, world champions and dedicated am-ateurs, through vast distances of challeng-ing terrain. With its unexplored land-scapes, the stage locations of Citrusdal,Tulbagh, Wellington and Stellenboschawait the most prestigious mountain bike
stage race in the world, before riders againfinish at the Lourensford wine estate, ashas been tradition since 2007. To KevinEvans, who finished in second place lastyear, the new route looks tough as usual.“We wouldn’t expect anything else frommy father, Dr Evil and the team. I think thestages around Citrusdal will be the hard-est. I think stage six will be the one to
watch.“By that time the general classification
is set, so riders will allow breaks to slipaway, if they’re not a threat. We’ll be tar-geting all eight stages for a stage win, asthere is no such thing as an easy stage onthe Cape Epic. We’ll be riding conserva-tively, and hope for a dash of good luck,”he said.
New Absa Cape Epic route ‘will be just as tough as ever’
